Training | ELT Reflections

Musings of a teacher always in training. July 17, 2015. Image courtesy of the U.S. Marine Corps. So what was the problem? Fast forward to today where I am the practicum instructor and I have that raw rookie, eager to please in my classroom. This isn’t my first time doing this, but for some reason it is causing me to reflect more on how I approach the classroom and what advice I would give to those who are doing a practicum and those who taking them under their wing. Ask lots of questions. Some practicum ...

Musings of a teacher always in training. June 30, 2015. Image courtesy of Steve. What is a shuffle listening and how does it work? The process is pretty simple in concept, but somewhat tricky in implementation. The concept is that you take a short listening, chop it into shorter pieces, play them out of order and have students work in pairs and groups to piece it back together in the correct order. Simple, right? I also wanted students to have an opportunity to practice some note taking skills which we h...

Musings of a teacher always in training. All posts by nathanghall. March 25, 2016. I was in the car today driving home after dropping my parents off and I had the radio on, listening to a talk radio show on CBC Radio. The show was a special follow-up to some of the investigative stories they had covered recently. One of the stories was about a 70-year-old man here in Canada whose wife was taken to the hospital and then on to palliative care before she passed away in October 2013. View all 4 comments.

For many of the British Commonwealth countries around the world, Remembrance Day. Is set aside for honouring those who have died fighting for their countries. One of the traditions around this holiday is the wearing of bright red plastic or cloth poppies, a ritual connected to the poem written by Lieutenant Colonel John McRae. Money that goes towards the veterans and their families.

I want to make something perfectly clear, this is not an attack on the commenter. I do not know her, nor do I understand why she feels the way she does. Because of that, I will refer to some of her problems with this debate and attempt to address them in a civil manner (which didn’t go so well on video). 8220;Owning a TEFL...

#ccourses | Little did I know
https://clarissabezerra.com/category/ccourses
Little did I know. Living is a wonderful learning adventure. I have already mentioned in another post. How I stumbled upon Connected Courses, how it was basically a call to arms from my friend Maha Bali and how I extended that call to another friend Carla Arena. I’d browsed some of the pre-course resources available on their site. And remember finding it most invigorating to read Mike Wesch’s reflections. Flash forward a few weeks. Yesterday night I came across Jim Groom. To connections and to learning!

Reflections on authenticity in teaching and learning. EAP Dogme-style: A conference in Denmark just before lunch. Following on from my last post regarding my workshops in Brno at Masaryk University, these are the questions I left you dangling on tenterhooks with…. So…What did they write? Did it match what I had imagined? How did the rest of the day go? To become more confident in my speaking skills. To play some games or role-play. To have a nice chat. To meet new people. Reflections on authenticity in teaching and learning. EAP Dogme style @ Masaryk University: The run up. Just before Christmas I had a wonderful long weekend in Brno in the Czech Republic where I led two days of workshops, for PhD students and teachers at Masaryk Uni. I was invited after my BALEAP workshop on Dogme and EAP back in April last year. The BALEAP workshop was unplugged as much as possible; how else could I demonstrate the approach and get across the value I see in it? Is there such a thing?
