Metro maps . . . | Luddite with a Laptop
https://mrpjmerrell.wordpress.com/2014/05/27/metro-maps
Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Metro maps . . . Hmm – I’ve been seeing lots and lots of revision ‘metro maps’ appearing across my twitter feed over the last few weeks. I must confess, I’m not sure of their merit. I like the aesthetic, but there are very few ways I can see myself using them in the classroom. It’s all just a little . . . chaotic. However, I’m clearly in the minority here, so what do I know! 8211; to help me build this. May 27, 2014. Leave a Reply x.

Adobe Voice – nearly the perfect tool | Luddite with a Laptop
https://mrpjmerrell.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/adobe-voice-nearly-the-perfect-tool
Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Adobe Voice – nearly the perfect tool. The biggest problem I’m having with trying to make greater use of technology in my classroom is the sheer amount of time it takes to create materials. I had a play and managed to come up with the following. Which would be cool. Which is a shame. However, Voice has only been live for a couple of months and, from looking at their support website, I’m not the only user to feel this frustrat...

Getting students to share . . . | Luddite with a Laptop

Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Getting students to share . . . Another long time between posts – the perils of having lots of exam classes, I guess! In lessons of late, we’ve been doing lots of revision, essay writing and revisiting previously taught material in order to make sure all of the pupils were as ready as possible for their exams. I’ve – as I’m sure all colleagues have! 8211; on a searchable blog. I’ll certainly be directing my pupils towards it ...

Google Classroom vs Edmodo | Luddite with a Laptop
https://mrpjmerrell.wordpress.com/2014/09/14/google-classroom-vs-edmodo
Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Google Classroom vs Edmodo. So, a new school year and there are new toys with which to play. One of the ones I’ve been hotly anticipating has been Google Classroom, which finally went live for those of us not ‘invited’ to trial it, during the Summer break. At the moment, I’m struggling a little to see the difference between this Edmodo – indeed, in many respects, I think Edmodo is a more user-friendly tool. September 14, 2014.

Using iTunes U Course Manager | Luddite with a Laptop
https://mrpjmerrell.wordpress.com/2014/06/06/using-itunes-u-course-manager
Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Using iTunes U Course Manager. As we come to the end of the year, I’m reviewing the ways in which I make content available to students. I have to say, I’ve quite liked using Edmodo as a way of getting information across to my pupils and, certainly, in the classrooms that have computers, it’s been a very easy way of cutting down on my photocopying! So, I did …. Basically, what you end up with is something that looks like the below.

A moron’s guide to QR codes | Luddite with a Laptop

Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. A moron’s guide to QR codes. Trust me. If I can use these, then every single other person on the planet can …. A couple of Bloggers I follow have been extolling the virtues of embedding QR codes in worksheets as a really useful way of linking students to digital content. I’m glad I did! First of all, though, what is a QR code? Rather than create a huge pack of paper, printing it off and giving it to all my classes, I decided I want...

Using Thinglink | Luddite with a Laptop

Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Okay – so this is really cool. I don’t think I’ve really got to grips with everything you can do with it yet, but I thought I’d share my current work in progress. Once you sign up, you get the option to upload an image. I went for Bruegel’s ‘Triumph of Death’ as I always think that’s very Wastelandy . . . Once you have the image, you can then ‘link’ various ‘things’ to it. Hence the title, I guess. You place a ‘dot’ on ...When I...

Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Growing a Bottom Mindset. It’s 7am on Saturday morning (the first Saturday of the half-term break) and I’ve arisen, uncharacteristically early, to watch Joe Root pile on the runs. Day Three of the Second Test against Pakistan on what looks like a featherbed. What could possibly go wrong? I don’t like setting. In fact, our school has tried hard to stop departments splitting students up in this way – with only Maths a...In English, w...

Deciding what they need to know | Luddite with a Laptop

Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. Deciding what they need to know. If you are unfamiliar with the idea of Knowledge Organisers, I would suggest reading this post. Initially, I was sceptical. I could see how such an idea would work well in a subject with specific facts, dates and events, but I was not sure whether it would work so well with literature texts. However, after being thoroughly impressed by the range of English Knowledge Organisers. Remains of the Day.

Revision menus | Luddite with a Laptop
https://mrpjmerrell.wordpress.com/2014/04/20/revision-menus
Luddite with a Laptop. Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story. I’m seeing quite a number of ‘revision menus’ at the moment from the people I follow on Twitter. I know lots of people are sceptical about them but, thinking about our first lesson back after the Easter break, I quite like the idea of getting the pupils to have to do something more active than simply getting me to run over things I’ve taught before or inflicting death by practice paper for the next few weeks. April 20, 2014. You ar...
