The Column: October 2011
http://ericsomething.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Old editors never die, they just resort to bloggery. Friday, October 21, 2011. Moving - from someone else's blog space to my own. After I've been hanging my hat and quill here for who-knows-how-many years, The Column is moving. For me, this is a giant step. Rather than using a hosted site such as Blogger (brought to you by the friendly folks of Google), the new site is my own. All of which is good news for this kid. Anyway, the new site location is http:/ column.ericpulsifer.com. Links to this post.

Old editors never die, they just resort to bloggery. Friday, July 30, 2010. Fire season starts in southern California. The Southeast coast (including Charleston) has its hurricanes. The Midwest, tornadoes. The upper East Coast has New York City. Every place has a specific disaster to call its own. Hot dry Santa Ana winds, desert-like conditions, and dry brush give a fire all it needs. Firefighters Attack River of Flame Near L.A. This one pictured is out near Palmdale. Links to this post. The Workbench, Reloaded: September 2009
http://ericsomething-tech.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Wednesday, September 23, 2009. Twitter's appeal: People love the mundane. I'll have to admit, this Twitter grows on you. A couple of years ago, I hadn't even heard of Twitter, and even a year ago I wondered what the point of it was. It's this mundane stuff that seems to be much of Twitter's appeal. And, it's become huge. According to ComputerWorld, people are tweeting. Studied 1.5 million "tweets" and came to the same conclusion.

The Workbench, Reloaded: An old scam takes a new homegrown tack
http://ericsomething-tech.blogspot.com/2009/12/old-scam-takes-new-homegrown-tack.html
The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Saturday, December 12, 2009. An old scam takes a new homegrown tack. You've probably seen this scenario in your email box a few times. Someone has lots of money they can't get to, and wants your help in securing it. Just send a reply, and that'll start the wheels turning. . But these can be sniffed out a mile away. They're usually from someone in Nigeria, or some other third-world country. And here's the pitch:. And then, the gist ...

http://ericsomething-tech.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Wednesday, January 13, 2010. Got my Chrome on - finally! After a whole bunch of testing, tweaking, and head-banging. Google Chrome is now working on my Linux box. At issue was an nss file; I'm not real sure what it does, but it makes Chrome work. That's all I need to know. Keep in mind, this is for a Slackware version of Linux, specifically Vector Linux, which is the one I use. It's in .tgz format, for me a breeze to install. On my...

The Workbench, Reloaded: Facebook security issues? It's the ducky's fault
http://ericsomething-tech.blogspot.com/2009/12/facebook-security-issues-its-duckys.html
The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Wednesday, December 9, 2009. It's the ducky's fault. Gee everybody's so friendly on Facebook . probably too much so. Two Facebook users, Daisy Felettin and Dinette Stonily, sent out friend requests to 100 Facebookers each, chosen at randon though concentrating on their own age groups. Between the two of them, 95 people decided to become their friends. Ugh There are a lot of people who shouldn't be running computers. At Sophos, they...

The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Wednesday, December 23, 2009. Single-tasking rules with new text editors. Maybe it's a longing for a simpler time, or the realization that your computer is loaded with distractions, but lately I've been seeing lot of text-editing programs designed to narrow your focus. Multitasking is out now. Welcome to the wonderful world of single-tasking. . The big question here is, what fun is that? Much as I've tried to multitask, I always d...

The Workbench, Reloaded: Chrome becomes headache on Linux box
http://ericsomething-tech.blogspot.com/2010/01/chrome-becomes-headache-on-linux-box.html
The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Wednesday, January 6, 2010. Chrome becomes headache on Linux box. I'll admit it. I had my early misgivings about the Google Chrome browser when it was first coming out. Like, what's Google doing in the software business? So I put myself on the Chrome mailing list, waiting for the Linux version to come out. A few weeks ago, the first version for MacIntosh and Linux. Was released, with all the warts. I use Vector Linux, which runs wi...

The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Tuesday, October 7, 2008. As seen on my home computer: MetPad in the front, Geany in the rear.). Although a big part of my life is working with words, I don't process them. Sounds almost blasphemous, especially for a writer. Why wouldn't I be interested in a word processor that does everything, checks my spelling and grammar, offers tips with that little animated paper-clip dude, and makes my coffee? OK, so how do I write? On the c...

The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Thursday, July 23, 2009. Mossberg: Windows 7 looks good except . Y'all Windows junkies can't wait for Version 7? According to Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, Windows 7 beats the pants off Vista (which isn't difficult). And even seems a lot sturdier than XP. (It remains to be seen how it stands up against Windows 98SE, the American classic). Saturday, July 11, 2009. Best engineering happens when system dies. I have one o...

The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Saturday, April 18, 2009. Review: Are Netbooks hip or hype? I've joined the laptop crowd, kinda sorta. Recently I acquired an Acer Aspire One, one of the new breed of mini-laptops that they in the industry call "netbooks." A pretty handy little device; about the size of a hardback book. The keyboard is likewise small, in fact the same size as the Belkin foldout keyboard I used with the handheld. Although I'm good with a keyboar...

The Jam Session, Reloaded. Music for those who appreciate it and play it. Monday, August 2, 2010. Newport Jazz Festival is August 7-8, live feed planned. Looks like I'll miss the Newport Jazz Festival for the 52nd year in a row. Too bad. This year's edition, in Newport, Rhode Island August 7-8, will have folks like Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Ahmad Jamal and the Chick Corea Freedom Band with Roy Haynes. Great lineup. Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and Carmen McRae. It was in 1956 that a tired-soun...

The Workbench, Reloaded
The Workbench, Reloaded. Geekiness, tips, tinfoil hats, and penguin dust. Monday, February 1, 2010. New Firefox makes browser war a fair fight. If you regularly read this space, you'll notice how the Google Chrome Web browser kind of grew on me. And after my initial reservations I've come to love it. Something about its speed. But now Firefox, with its new 3.6 version, has seen enough improvements to almost make it a fair fight. Being the experimenter that I am, after reading some of the reports I had to...
