May 14, 2013. Before WWI, Trieste was the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s outlet to the sea on the Adriatic. Today, as part of Italy, it retains a Mittel-European flavor, looking more like Vienna than Venice, with a cuisine of boiled meats, goulash and strudel (although with pine nuts for an Italian flavor), along with pasta and fish. We came here to celebrate James Joyce, who wrote much of Ulysses in Trieste. Allora, from here we go back to Venice to catch a cheapo 40 Euro flight to Paris.

See, that’s what the app is perfect for. Wahhhh, I don’t wanna. Venice is an amazing city. We couldn’t help but get lost in the labyrinth of narrow passageways and bridges. Crossing canals large and small, we would turn a corner and magically encounter a grand piazza. There are more tourists here than anywhere we’ve been, an international procession of smiling people in their gondolas, viewing churches and sipping Campari in San Marco, while munching pizza and gelato. July 1, 2013. We celebrated our return to Los Angeles with a bridal shower for Maya, hosted by her sisters Dara and Zoe at our Mar Vista home. The house was festively decorated with pink poufs and orange striped straws. Mini sandwiches, cheese and fruit, caprese skewers, dipped crudités, fruity drinks, chocolate strawberries and mini cupcakes were served and enjoyed by all. June 10, 2013. We spent our last week in Paris in an apartment near the Opera/Galeries Lafayette, going out for walks and riding the metro to lunch in different parts of the city. Some places were very touristy; others were a little off the beaten track. The food has been delicieux, from classic cream sauces to seemingly simple dishes with bold flavors. Our favorite restaurants were Les Saisons, Desvouges, Philou and Semilla. On to London for a week, and then a flight back home! Theme is The Atlantic.

April 17, 2013. It was cold when we arrived in Beijing. We bundled up, but the wind almost swept us off the pagoda at the top of the hill in Jingshan Park, overlooking the Forbidden City, the center of Beijing’s grid. The next day we toured the massive complex, marching from one grand courtyard to another, following the troops of tourists through the imperial grounds. In stark contrast are the ultra modern architectural classics of the early 21st Century: the Bird’s Nest (Olympic Stadium).

Sunday, August 5, 2012. Last night we had quite the adventure! It started out with homemade kosheri at our apartment. Kosheri is a carbohydrate packed combination of spaghetti, macaroni noodles, rice, vermicelli, and lentils. You put carmalized onions, vinegar/lemon sauce, and a tomato sauce on top. So we ate kosheri with some friends and then we hopped onto the metro. The show was a blast! He was probably the happiest finger cymbal man I have ever seen, and he LOVED his job! He was very fun to watch.
