Ethan's Vivifying Adventures

Wednesday, May 11, 2016. You spun me right round, baby. Last month I took a little trip to participate in another research study. It was a whirlwind of a single day near Philadelphia, PA at the NASTAR. National Aerospace Training and Research) facility. The study is looking at the effectiveness of training for non-astronauts to participate in future commercial sub-orbital space flights. The real attractant to me for this study was the chance to ride the big centrifuge. Saturday, February 20, 2016. I just...

Ethan's Vivifying Adventures: November 2013

http://ethansvivifyingadventures.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 16, 2013. Time flies whilst gainfully employed. The weeks are already clipping by at a rapid pace, now that some sort of routine has been established at and away from work. It has been a long while since I’ve had this out in “the world”, as I usually conceptualized non-South Pole living over the preceding years. I have regularly been walking to and from work, which is a pleasant way to begin and end the workday hours. I certainly have challenge enough in that regard these days. My trai...

Ethan's Vivifying Adventures: January 2014

http://ethansvivifyingadventures.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 7, 2014. Well, a very happy new year to us all. It is a nice relief to have employment that won’t (hopefully) end before the end of this calendar year. The cycle is (likely) broken! I guess I’m (parenthetically) still not taking things for granted. I have been doing a lot of solo research at work lately, since we are being withheld from most instructor-led training until after attending a series of classes called ISS Boot Camp that will kick off sometime in February. Bill, wherever in th...

Ethan's Vivifying Adventures: In the backyard

http://ethansvivifyingadventures.blogspot.com/2014/06/in-backyard.html

Sunday, June 29, 2014. A longer while back I took in a couple sites in the more immediate area here in Houston. Up north a bit, at the site of the last (and very brief) battle of the Texas Revolution, is the San Jacinto Monument. This edifice is a bit taller than the Washington Monument in D.C., and has a commanding view of the Houston area. One can get a feel for how utterly planar this coastal area is, which makes Kansas seem positively undulating. On the Houston Ship Channel is easily espied. Training...

Ethan's Vivifying Adventures: A Hyborian excursion

http://ethansvivifyingadventures.blogspot.com/2014/06/a-hyborian-excursion.html

Sunday, June 29, 2014. Roundabout 2002 I discovered some old pulp paperback copies of Conan stories in a used bookstore in Maryland, while out there working on the SOHO spacecraft at NASA Goddard. Over the years I read more of those Conan tales, and reveled in the re-publication of the original tales over the next several years during the rest of my time back east and back in Kansas in grad school. Event that celebrates the author and his works. That changed in 2014. Where REH did a lot of his writing.

Ethan's Vivifying Adventures: Still here, still working

http://ethansvivifyingadventures.blogspot.com/2014/09/still-here-still-working.html

Sunday, September 7, 2014. Still here, still working. I'm still here in Houston, chipping away at the training program bit by bit. Last week I finally got to work my first spacecraft simulation. It was nice to finally get to put all this "book learning" into action, and I am happy to finally get to the part of the learning curve to bring this all together in a push directly toward working real mission operations again. Roads less taken are always the most rewarding ones.”. View my complete profile.

The Frozen Desert.com: Tryptophan Blues

http://thefrozendesert.blogspot.com/2008/12/tryptophan-blues.html

The Frozen Desert.com. Tuesday, December 2, 2008. The holiday was great with my family. I expected the young'uns to have grown more in the two years since I have seen them, but they were mostly the same. Everyone is healthy and that's the main thing. And then there was Friday. As you might expect, I was able to purchase more fuel than I ever had before. The rest of the ride was uneventful, and I was happy to go straight to sleep. Live Webcam from The South Pole. The Antarctic Sun Newspaper.

Sadly, no…. Arts, Humanities, Tech. July 25, 2014. Throwing ideas in the air. I’m writing this as a general think through brought about by this article in the Washington Post, brough to my attention by Nora Jemisin. My son has been suspended five times. He’s 3. One would almost think that kids shouldn’t be in day-care or pre-school situations when they are 3 years old. However, this is often necessary for working parents, and some states/cities require kids be in school at age 5. From → Opinion. Question...

The Frozen Desert.com: Therapy

http://thefrozendesert.blogspot.com/2008/11/therapy.html

The Frozen Desert.com. Monday, November 24, 2008. Normally, a tent or RV is the standard accommodation. Here's a video of a Trophy Truck (a $500,00USD endeavour) passing like I was standing still (which I was, but only about 5 feet from the behemoth). Naturally, I had put my camera into the truck. The next day, we arose at 4:30am for a 5am departure. I had to get back home ASAP because I had to buy clothes to start my job the next day. More on that tomorrow. BTW: Shortly after I got back, I was finally a...

The Frozen Desert.com: Broadcast Radio is Dead

http://thefrozendesert.blogspot.com/2009/04/broadcast-radio-is-dead.html

The Frozen Desert.com. Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Broadcast Radio is Dead. After the last commercial, will you please shut-off the transmitter. The paradigm that we have operated under for so many years has changed. Ever since the first radio broadcast over 100 years ago, broadcasters have created empires built on advertising revenue. They put up huge towers and dispersed their message into the air and hoped that someone would hear it; this worked for a long time! You should look at your radio the same way.

Smay Days

Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Happy Breastfeeding Awareness Month. I cannot help but comment on this. When I had little Ethan, I planned on exclusively breastfeeding for as long as it made sense in my family's life. I pictured myself sitting peacefully with my baby and feeding him in the rocking chair my mother-in-law had used in her children's rooms. Could be misleading.food for thought. Monday, July 15, 2013. Friday, March 24, 2006. Sitting in our tiny little room (about which we are not bitter), I am sitting back and enjoying something that this project has not seen for awhile- the creative, pure and constructive free exchange of great ideas. No attacking, no defending. Just healthy collaboration. And I am soooo happy. I am smiling. Truly. I am. JD will vouch for me. I'm sure that I will write more later. Well, maybe.possibly. Monday, December 7, 2009. Salaman Rushdie would has very interesting ideas when it comes to The Wizzard Of Oz. And the idea of home. Rushdie argues that the the point of the origional Wizzard Of Oz was not that "there is no place like home". Rushdie states that "It's one thing for Dorthy to want to go home, quite another that she can only do so by eulogizing the ideal state which Kansas so Obviously is not". Me, you and everyone else too. Hello I'm Ethan and unfortunately I'm a bit young to be doing much myself with my web site at the moment, but fortunately my parent minions seem to be quite happy to keep it up to date for me. So at the moment the things I'm sharing are really just for my friends and family. If you want to see what I'm up to and how I'm getting on, just get in touch with one of my minions and I'm sure they'll be able to help you out.
