Etiquette in China: Building Relationships

http://www.etiquetteinchina.com/buildingrelationships.html

Business is all about relationships," say many executives. This is even truer in China. The word "guanxi" in Chinese means "relationship," but it also a concept or a philosophy. Building relationships in China takes time. It takes place over the course of years, not days or months. To develop "guanxi" one must provide at least as many favors as you accept. Don't be surprised if your gift is not opened right away. Opening a gift too quickly is a sign of greed. The receiver may also decline your gi...Color...

Quality pens, banquets, candy, fruit, lighters, calculators, handicrafts from home, illustrated books. Knives or scissors, clocks, red pens, handkerchiefs, items wrapped in white, blue or black. Has a rich culture developed over a long history. That history has helped shape standards of etiquette much different from Western norms. Etiquette in China is dedicated to helping you understand how to conduct yourself in China to build better relationships, succeed in business and generally enjoy your stay.

Etiquette in China: Language

http://www.etiquetteinchina.com/language.html

China is making a push to improve English education across the country, especially for the 2008 Olympics. However English is still not widely spoken. Most international companies doing business in China should have multi-lingual staff. When attending meetings, it is a good idea to bring your own interpreter. Not all the conversation may be conducted in English. If you rely on an interpreter that is provided, you may find that not everything is translated or even properly translated.

Etiquette in China: Dinners and Banquets

http://www.etiquetteinchina.com/dinner.html

Dinners or banquets are frequently held for business entertaining and special occasions. As with business meetings, it is a good idea to arrive early. Chinese follow a strict hierarchy, which also applies to seating. The seat in the middle of the table facing the door is for the host. To the host's left will be the guest of honor. It is wise to wait to be seated rather than choosing a seat. If you host a banquet (a good gift, see "Building Relationships"), follow these same rules. Expect a lot of food to...

Etiquette in China: Business Meeting

http://www.etiquetteinchina.com/businessmeeting.html

Dress is not as formal in China as in some countries. However, you will be looked upon favorably if you dress well. Conservative dress is preferred for both men and women. Yet, jeans are not acceptable for business meetings, and shorts are only used for sports. Men should plan on wearing plain suits that are beige, brown or dark blue. Ties should also be conservative. After entering the room, the most senior person on the other side should be acknowledged first. Bowing or nodding is typical, but hand...

Worldtour in China: Teacher Torture in Beijing

http://worldtourinchina.blogspot.com/2007/05/teacher-torture-in-beijing.html

Wednesday, May 30, 2007. Teacher Torture in Beijing. I don't have these kind of problems at my school but I do see a lack of discipline. And see some comments here. At Global Voices online. Posted by worldtour @ 3:41 PM. I also learn Chinese. Language by a special and innovative service in Beijing Chinese School. I like to learn in live class. From Beijing directly. I also like to practice Chinese with volunteers. Freely everyday. Watching Chinese learning TV on CLTV. Am reading everything I can find.

Sunday, May 18, 2008. Great Wall and Security. Our last full day in Beijing began with a group meeting to discuss what issues are shaping technology in China. The scholars participated in a brain storming session to identify themes surrounding these issues. Then the group was subdivided to perform a deeper dive into each theme. One of the themes studied was Security. The meeting was capped off by a guest speaker that specifically addressed security of Bluetooth protocols. Posted by Faculty Advisor. The d...

http://islptechnology2008.blogspot.com/2008/05/add-on-balloon-trip.html

Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Add On: Balloon Trip. Unfortunately, we had some trouble with one of the balloons. A tear developed in one balloon (pictured). It had to make a quick landing. The rough landing caused one scholar injure his foot. A few x-rays later, the scholar was able to return to the hotel. It was a scary experience, but it was fortunate that all our scholars were able to remain with the delegation. Posted by Faculty Advisor. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). What is this blog about? International Scholar Laureate - Technology China: May 2008

http://islptechnology2008.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 31, 2008. Back in the U S of A. Yesterday the delegation made its way to the airport. A number of scholars choose to take the Maglev (magnetic levitation train) to the airport. The train speeds to over 430 km/hr (over 267 mph) on its 7 minute 30 second journey. It is the first commercial high-speed maglev line in the world. It went into operation in 2004. Posted by Faculty Advisor. Thursday, May 29, 2008. Add On: Guilin Reed Flute Cave. The cave has become quite a tourist attraction. It...

Tuesday, May 20, 2008. If you are reading this. Then you are not in China. Access to this blog is blocked from China unless you use a proxy server. China blocks websites in an effort to hide what is deemed inappropriate information for the Chinese people. International Scholar Laureate - Technology China: Hangzhou: Zhejiang University

http://islptechnology2008.blogspot.com/2008/05/hangzhou-zhejiang-university.html

Tuesday, May 20, 2008. In the afternoon, the scholars took part in a basketball game against some of the better local players. The game was closely contested. But the Chinese team ended up winning 31 to 29. The Chinese students lacked our height, but they made up for it with tenacity. Perhaps there is another lesson to learn here. International Scholar Laureate - Technology China: Add On: To Yangshou

http://islptechnology2008.blogspot.com/2008/05/add-on-to-yangshou.html

Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Add On: To Yangshou. The day after getting to Guilin, we were already on our way to another destination: Yangshou. This very small town is down the river from Guilin. We boarded a boat for the four hour ride down the Li River. Towering cliffs surround the river on all sides during the trip. The scholars took a large number of photos as every bend in the rive brought a new magnificent site. Posted by Faculty Advisor. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). What is this blog about?
