Homegrown Shadowboxes: Everything In Its Place—A Poetry Assemblage
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2016/05/everything-in-its-placea-poetry.html
Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Everything In Its Place—A Poetry Assemblage. That's how it was with this drawer I was looking at, an old thing with no drawer pull. I stood it on end and stuck an old whisk broom in it, and thought it fit just fine. Now, what to go with it? Mildew from the humid Alabama air? I lined this old drawer with pages from a 1903 magazine to finish the effect—imagine you're peeking into the drawer of the housewife-sunset, the place where she keeps her whisk broom before dusk. Her f...You dro...

Homegrown Shadowboxes: May 2016
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 17, 2016. There is a business in Canton, Ohio that sells reclaimed architectural elements they salvage from houses slated for demolition. Unfortunately, their warehouse burned to the ground recently, and they are busy rebuilding, not just their structure but their business in total. Last weekend, they had a sale on the now empty lot, selling what was left of things piled and stacked here and there. So, what does one do with salvaged things that didn't burn up? Weary of time,. So, this new bo...

Homegrown Shadowboxes: December 2015
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2015_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 29, 2015. Photo Transfer Easel Piece. I love history. I love my family. I love my family's history. So, when I see old photos from my family collection, I love everything about them. This is a photo of my parents not long after they were married in the late 1940s. My father was in the Army in WWII, and my mother was a book keeper, and they met and married after the war. Weren't they dapper? What you need—or what I needed:. 8226; illustration board cut to size (I used 5 x 7). I chose som...

Homegrown Shadowboxes: La Wilson
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2016/04/la-wilson.html
Friday, April 29, 2016. It has been way too long since I posted here, and I have no excuse. So, I'll make up for lapsed time with a great post. It's great because of the subject, more than for any other reason. About 45 minutes from here is an artist not many have heard of, but she has made an impact in the region. La Wilson is her name, and she creates collages, or assemblages she calls them. I should speak in past tense, not because she is deceased but because she is no longer working.

Homegrown Shadowboxes: November 2015
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2015_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 23, 2015. I'm Supposed to Be Working. These days, I prefer to work with movies in the background. For example, while I worked on the aforementioned newsletter, which promotes a Christmas concert, I watched White Christmas. I'll likely finish rambling here before Ferris makes it back home and outsmarts Mr. Rooney—at the moment, he and his co-horts are pressing their noses to the glass at the Sears Tower—so I can begin working on a box before having to choose another film. I don't think I ...

Homegrown Shadowboxes: October 2015
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2015_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 29, 2015. Christmas Music in October. My sisters and I would play that and the other records we had in the house all stacked up on the stereo, and we'd start playing them in October. That seemed to be the time to push all the nostalgia buttons and to lean forward toward our favorite season. Church calendar be damned. Well, not to be left out of the early festivities, I got to work on a shadow box using one of those carols the Chieftains sing so well, "O the Holly She Bears A Berry.".

Homegrown Shadowboxes: August 2015
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 31, 2015. I have exhibited in exactly one craft show, a small one with fewer than a dozen artists participating, and from what I could tell, not a lot of money exchanging hands. Or maybe that was just what was happening at my own table. Enter the walking trail the dog and I visit every week and trees that drop acorns on the ground. Enter me bagging the bases of those acorns into my pouch that mainly holds poop bags. Enter spinning wheels inside my feverish brain. This stuff dries clear and...

Homegrown Shadowboxes: March 2016
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2016_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Time Management OR Doing What You Can Do. So, I am not inclined to make a shadow box today, not even one of the little ones with the moss and little sticks and the burlap. Of course, I could sit here and watch all of "Gone With the Wind" and eat another chocolate chip cookie, but I would like to use my time well today, even if I'm in a nasal fog. Then I sanded the black boxes to roughen them up a bit, and then, following directions for an effect I'm interested in, I sanded the wh...

Homegrown Shadowboxes: February 2016
http://homegrownboxes.blogspot.com/2016_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 21, 2016. An Inside Girl Goes Outside. When I work on a shadowbox filled with natural elements, I am not satisfied with just creating a scene, or "painting with twigs and leaves," as I like to think of my work. I like to add deeper meaning with a quote or poem that I believe is significant in some way. Lately, I have been making use of quotes left behind by John Muir. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. How little note is taken. Of the deeds of Nature! You can...
