Survey on two retired boats. These boats were called Shrinkle and the Skiff. We had to say what we thought needed replacing or restoring on both boats and to learn some of the language of the anatomy of boat construction. Below are some of the words I leant with definitions. Planking - Falmouth Marine School

Planking a boat seems to be one of the more important parts of building a boat. This is because the hull shape, or what boat designers call The Fair Line of a boat, depends on getting the planking right. The the top strake-plank to the gunwale and the garboard planks are usually wider for aesthetic reasons. We then took a measurement off the longest frame, which is usually around the midships station. We measured using masking tape along the edge of the formar frame to get an accurate reading.

Working from the lines drawings, we made a general line, using a baton, in the shape of the keel. We cut this shape using a still saw. We cut down 2 inches and then adjusted the blade to take us down another 2. This only got us half way through the wood and so a chain saw was used for the rest.
