Figs, Bay & Wine

Figs, Bay and Wine. Diary of a Mediterranean Kitchen in New York. Thursday, November 10, 2011. The November Harvest Calendar. It feels as though we're standing at the edge of winter now. The harvest is almost done for the year - we're already starting to draw off cold storage for many of my favorite fall crops. I love the scent of autumn, though really what is it other than the smell of decay? But there's still a mineral freshness to be found. Newly dug carrots. The Romanesco is stunning. Which runs the ...

Figs, Bay & Wine: October 2011

http://figsbaywine.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Figs, Bay and Wine. Diary of a Mediterranean Kitchen in New York. Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Artichokes Poached in Olive Oil with Lemon Anchovy Sauce - a Recipe. I'm tinkering. My kitchen is packed with quinces, baby leeks, and the last of the plums. In the meantime, here's a treat I've been setting out with drinks at the end of the day since the baby artichokes arrived, complete with my favorite tale of culinary revenge. Or farmhouse near Arles. It may occur to some of us that the family – and per...

Figs, Bay & Wine: Things I Love

http://figsbaywine.blogspot.com/2011/05/things-i-love.html

Figs, Bay and Wine. Diary of a Mediterranean Kitchen in New York. Monday, May 16, 2011. The Avenue. Early, empty on the way to the Saturday market. No memory of the chill. But no scent of heat yet either. And the first day each spring of River Garden's lily of the valley crop. It's my favorite moment of May. How lily of the valley always, like clockwork, seems to mean that the French breakfast radishes are ready too - mild, crisp and tipped with white. And a floral glass of rosé. Posted by Figs, Bay, Wine.

Figs, Bay & Wine: Toad in the Hole

http://figsbaywine.blogspot.com/2011/10/toad-in-hole.html

Figs, Bay and Wine. Diary of a Mediterranean Kitchen in New York. Monday, October 17, 2011. Toad in the Hole. Something about all the wind and rain we've had lately makes me long for comfort, warmth, and the food of my youth. Here's another of the pieces I wrote as part of a feature on British food for my friends Kelly and Katie over at PixiesDidIt! Serves 3 - 4. 8 medium sized, banger-style sausages. 1 tsp kosher salt. 189; cup milk. 189; cup water. Meanwhile, whisk together the flour and salt in a mixi...

Sweet Vinegar: January 2012

http://sweetvinegar.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Unlike big hair, Wham! And acid-washed jeans, my love of pineapple has stood the test of time. It is quite versatile, but one of my favorite ways to eat it has to be sliced into huge, watermelon-like wedges, or tucked into this bread pudding. My kids love this for breakfast the next day, but I love it when it is still barely warm. 2/3 cup granulated sugar. 5 tbsp unsalted butter, softened. 3/4 tsp kosher salt. 1 20 ounce can crushed pineapple, in its own juice, drained. I happe...

Sweet Vinegar: April 2012

http://sweetvinegar.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 28, 2012. Sweet Chili Fried Eggs and Avocado. The combination of eggs and avocado has been around for a while. Who hasn't seen an avocado sneak onto a plate of huevos rancheros, looking at you with feigned innocence? I came across a baked egg in avocado on Pinterest. Recently, and tried it. Booooring! It was definitely flat in the flavor department. Something needed to cut the richness of the yolk and avocado. But. what? That's usually the function of the salsa. I was on a mission! Place ...

Sweet Vinegar: Jalapeno Bread & Butter Pickles

http://sweetvinegar.blogspot.com/2012/05/jalapeno-bread-butter-pickles.html

Saturday, May 12, 2012. Jalapeno Bread and Butter Pickles. It has been a strange, tiring week. I sent a resume in to a posting that I would really love, and had an appointment for an interview less than a half hour later. So, I might be relocating to Boston. I'll be visiting at the end of the month. Fingers crossed! That I made today, thanks to Elise. It really doesn't get any better than that. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Figs & Walnut Wine

Saturday, June 28, 2014. My Big Fat Weekend. I love to travel. I love to eat. I mostly travel TO eat. Seriously, I have no interest in visiting places that don't offer me less then five options for amazing food a day. The obvious locales are my favourites .Paris, New York, San Francisco but I've become very good at seeking the obscure. Tricks of the trade-. Rarely trust a concierge. Always trust a bartender. Walk between meals if possible - even if its Chicago in February and -38. I'm on my way to NYC fo...
