DITA and the table conundrum | First Draft
http://firstdraftblog.com/2014/08/10/dita-and-the-table-conundrum
Musings in Technical Communication. August 10, 2014. DITA and the table conundrum. I am a big fan of DITA. I like the structure that the DITA framework provides, and I like the scrutiny it implies to apply the proper semantic tags or concept types. I am a big fan of tables. I like the structure tables provide to organize content, and I like the clarity they give to complex information. And yet, I am torn when using tables in DITA! I appreciate that nothing prevents using table and applying a formatting s...

Musings in Technical Communication. May 27, 2014. The first step is always the hardest. Well, here it is: my first blog post ever! Needless to say that my foray in research did wonders for my budding paranoia. So, what changed? Last week, I was a first-time attendee to the 61st Society for Technical Communication Summit ( #stc14. In Phoenix, Arizona and what I saw left me dumbfounded: professional technical communicators sharing slide decks, tweeting, and blogging, in one word, collaborating. On Punched ...

Musings in Technical Communication. Category Archives: blog entry. October 30, 2015. Originally published in the March 2014 of. STC’s monthly magazine ( http:/ intercom.stc.org/. I am always reticent to share my off-hours activities with my colleagues and professional acquaintances. It is nothing illegal or shameful, mind you; but, simply the memory of the look of confusion and misunderstanding I have gotten at times is deterrent enough. What do I do once I shed my technical writer’s suit? That was also ...

Internet Buzz about Tech Comm and Writing. About Save the Semicolon. Technical Communication, Language, Usage, and More. The Art of Standing Out. May 20, 2014. Several years ago, I interviewed with Google for a tech comm position. I got as far as a phone interview. Everyone told me that Google only hires people who wrote a book on the subject, or invented something great. It’s not enough to be merely a good writer. They’re all tech writers. But where’s the passion? Here’s what I did:. Yes, the truth has ...

First Draft | Reading, Writing, Running and Rants!
Reading, Writing, Running and Rants! November 1, 2011. Despite it probably being a dumb idea, I went ahead and registered for NaNoWriMo. It’s Melbourne Cup Day here – a public holiday – and so I got off to a pretty good start. 1701 words were written on my new novel today. That’s about 1600 more words than I’ve written in any one sitting for over a year now, so I’m pretty happy with that. From → Uncategorized. To NaNo or not to NaNo? October 31, 2011. So, what should I do? Do I NaNo or not? May 17, 2011.
Just Another Blog | More Crap to rot your brain
More Crap to rot your brain. October 7, 2010. FS7605 was a great road. This is a fun road, in fair condition. There were a couple areas with sizable ruts and a lot of fun water bars. From the start of FS7605 to the top of Burley Mountain is only 9 miles, but in that 9 miles you gain 4000 feet in elevation. Overall it was a fantastic filled with fun, laughter and some great scenery. Click here to see all of the photos. Click to download tracks. October 5, 2010. Okay, so that is the story of our trip. ...

First Draft Cafe
A place for writers to drop in, unwind, and relax between drafts. This blog is updated fortnightly. Sunday, 18 March 2018. Yes, I'm Rolling My Eyes! More snow - Really? I'm sick of this wintery weather. I really am. I dream of sunshine and primroses daffodils, tulips and blossom on the trees. Of warmer, happier days. I yearn for tea and cake on the lawn. I could be positive and look at it another way, snowy weekends mean I can stay home and get things done around the house. Ugh! Seriously, it's a joke, o...
