A year at the edge: May 2012
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Monday, 28 May 2012. An amazing still warm evening - perfect for an evening walk - yet we have the beach to ourselves. The sea is an alluring iridescent silvery blue - I wish that I had brought a towel to swim. - and is spoilt only by a slight brownish pall of pollution that hangs on the horizon. The cliffs cast long shadows onto the beach as the sun drops. Several starfishes have been brought in on the tide. The sea kale is magnificent, filling the air with its sweet honeyed scent. 1538 hrs 2.6m. I pick...

A year at the edge: October 2011
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 25 October 2011. A grey day with big, steely seas. There is an unusual amount of seaweed washed up on the shore. A mysterious triangle of posts has emerged from the shingle north of the works - what purpose do they serve? Meanwhile, beyond the barricades, the diggers are busy filling the geo-textile bags with shingle and sand and banking them up beneath the cliff. Will be a useful resource for my next exhibition. High tide: 08.48 hrs 3m; low tide 15.07 hrs 0.3m. Time of arrival: 12.05 hrs. Subsc...

A year at the edge: September 2011
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 27 September 2011. Barricades have appeared on the beach, dissecting the shingle and cutting off the beach to the north. This is my favourite area to walk and will be inaccessible due to sea defence work until at least December. Ironically, huge quantities of shingle have recently returned to the beach, vastly increasing the work necessary in order to install the defences. Nature plays cruel tricks. Tidal pickings are low and I am able to travel light on my way home. Time of arrival: 17.01hrs.

A year at the edge: 5th September: The end of my year at the edge
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2013/08/5th-september-end-of-my-year-at-edge.html
Wednesday, 5 September 2012. 5th September: The end of my year at the edge. I complete my year at the edge with an uneventful last walk and collection. Both the landscape and my finds are disappointly unremarkable. But I am accompanied by photographer Dave Wise (currently on residency with flyintheface) who. With a pinhole portrait of me and the mad black dog: timeless like the debris that washes up from the sea. High tide: 13.32 hrs 2.9m. Low tide: 19.38 hrs 0.6m. Time of arrival: 13.17 hrs.

A year at the edge: March 2012
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, 29 March 2012. The beach is empty and stunning, the sea an iridescent silver-blue in the evening light - yet not a soul on the beach apart from a single runner, whom my dog tries to round up. It's a falling tide, leaving pristine sand (apart from the paw prints of a mad dog) and virtually no litter. Perfect. I cannot imagine a better place to be. Low tide: 0.800 hrs 1.1m, high tide: 14.40 hrs 2.4m. Low tide: 20.40 hrs 0.9m (est). Time of arrival: 17.42 hrs. Tuesday, 20 March 2012. Lovely spring...

A year at the edge: June 2012
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, 28 June 2012. It's close but there is a refreshing breeze from the south west. The vegetated shingle banks steeply and in places is undercut. On top, the yellow-horned sea poppies are in full bloom. More starfish have washed in on the tide and there is a large Winnie the Pooh balloon and old tin of Brasso, alonside the usual rope and food pots punctuating the shingle along the tideline. High tide: 14.02 hrs 2.7m. Low tide: 22.41 hrs 0.6 m (est). Time of arrival: 18.33 hrs. Friday, 15 June 2012.

A year at the edge: January 2012
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 22 January 2012. Beautiful sunshine but freezing wind. We walk a long circuit across the marshes and through the woods before we get to the beach, arriving at the sluice south of Thorpeness. There is a large amount of plastics on the shingle, as well as signs of recent anglers (coke cans, newspaper, plastic bags, battery packaging, fishing line, night lights). It doesn't take long to fill a couple of bags. Finally we find a Smartie top and head to the Meare cafe for hot chocolate and cake. There ...

A year at the edge: 31st August
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2012/08/31st-august.html
Friday, 31 August 2012. My year at the edge is approaching its end - and what a way to go. The beach is deserted - it's like walking on my own island - and on day's like this, there is absolutely nowhere on earth I'd rather be. If only this had turned up on my final walk. High tide: 10.16 hrs 3.0m. Low tide: 16.42 hrs 0.2m. Time of arrival: 11.19 hrs. Weather: sunshine, wind NE 17 mph, temperature 14c. Marine litter: large quantities of polystyrene, plastic cups and rope and line. A year at the edge.

A year at the edge: July 2012
http://ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Monday, 9 July 2012. Dramatic skies on a balmy afternoon - deep purples and grey-greens in the intermittent sunshine. This time a starfish and, for a change, a fish have washed up on the tide. Poppies bloom in the disturbed soil where the cliff has fallen. I find a modest slection of cups and rope along the tideline. High tide: 14.31 hrs 2.9m. Low tide: 20.58 hrs 0.4m. Time of arrival: 15.38 hrs. Weather: cloud (stormy), wind W 12 mph, temperature 19c. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A year at the edge.
