A Sydney food blog. Monday, August 6, 2012. What could I make for a quick afternoon tea, that I had all the ingredients for at home? I frantically flipped through the magazines on hand, my cookbooks. Why do so many cakes require sour cream these days? Note to self: sour cream is looking more like a staple these days). I feel a recent lunch at Restaurant Balzac is worth a mention. For $39 for 3 courses, it's a great deal for the calibre of food served at this restaurant. Sunday, May 16, 2010. Pepes Udang (Spicy Prawns Grilled in Banana Leaves). Pepes is an Indonesian food usually wrapped in banana leaves. There are a number of different pepes, depending on the ingredients and spices used. "Udang" means prawns in Indonesian. So, pepes udang is spicy prawns grilled in banana leaves. I used foil wraps and my pepes still tastes as good as those I had in my hometown. It wasn't comfortable to have burning hands for several hours. Ingredients (for 6 pepes):. 8 big red chillies.

Saturday, September 26, 2009. 1 tbs Wakame seaweed (usually sold as dried form, soak in cold water for 5 mins then drain). 1 fresh sweet corn (boiled and cut the kernels). A small amount of cabbage (cut very thinly). Lettuce (optional, cut thinly). Carrot (optional, cut thinly). A pinch toasted sesame seeds. 3 tbs rice wine vinegar. 1 tbs sesame oil. 1 tbs kikkoman soy sauce. Prepare the Sesame salad dressing. Ensure that the sugar is completely dissolved. Saturday, August 7, 2010. Green Star Apple ( vú sữa. We found this interesting fruit in Marrickville last weekend. This suburb is our favourite place to do Vietnamese groceries. They have complete Vietnamese herbs and spices selection at low prices. The butcheries also provide fresh meats. Anyway, I couldn't wait any longer to eat this fruit when we reached home. Saturday, June 5, 2010. I made these mini puddings for my birthday dinner tomorrow. I want them to be served with pandan chiffon cake. I used basil seeds, pineapple and rambutan for the topping. An Indonesian style pudding with the use of coconut milk and pandan paste. Pandan paste cap koepoe koepoe. A can of any tropical fruits. Soak basil seeds in cold water for 20 mins. Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Steamed Scallops on Shell. This is Thu's most favourite dish. When I asked him what food he would like to have on his birthday, he answered "Scallops on shell, please". We specifically went to Hurstville to buy these scallops. They are reasonably cheap ($12.99/dozen) compared to the restaurant price ($3.50/shell). It is very easy to prepare as I used microwave to steam the scallops. Only took 2 minutes for 10 shells on a plate. Ginger (cut into tiny strips). 1 tsp sesame oil.

Sunday, August 15, 2010. Banana Choc Puff Pastry. I made them this afternoon after we cleaned our unit. Having done the housework for the week is always a relief for us. As a reward, I sometimes prepare little snacks or fruits for us to be recharged. The idea of banana choc puff pastry came from Master Chef Challenge competition we had in Arlene's bridal shower yesterday. It was a long process as I tend to make 80-100 wontons in one go and freeze them in small containers (10 wontons/pack). I really doubted that they would flower this year as I haven't done much except water them when they look a bit floppy. 3 pieces of calamari tubes (cut into squares). Zest and juice of 1 lemon. 2 bird's eye chillies (finely chopped). 2 garlic gloves (finely chopped). 4 tsp kecap manis. 4 tbs olive oil. A pinch of salt.
