I can’t believe it’s June | Foodnstuff

https://foodnstuff.wordpress.com/2015/06/13/i-cant-believe-its-june

Energy decline and self-sufficiency from Melbourne, Australia. Laquo; Hunter-gatherer, me. A year of solar. I can’t believe it’s June. I think I said that last month, when May rolled around. Is this the May Update then? Sort of. How about I roll it into June and then I won’t have to do a June update. Despite reading other food-growing blogs and seeing how much winter work other people are doing, I haven’t done much at all in the last month to write about. This motley crew are about to be planted :. This ...

Where is everybody? | Foodnstuff

Energy decline and self-sufficiency from Melbourne, Australia. Laquo; A year of solar. All on its own….the first asparagus of the season :. Another two in this spot, a skinny one and a fat one trying to hide beside a clump of Dianella :. This is the earliest they’ve ever appeared. It’s usually late July or August before they come up. I’m not complaining! Not the first pepino of the season, but the most I’ve ever harvested in one go :. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). June 28, 2015 at 6:50 pm.

This is one of the best and most pertinent posts I’ve seen on the end of the oil age and energy decline. Watch the interview at the end with Joseph Tainter, author of The Collapse of Complex Societies and take note of the answer he gives to a questioner about whether technological innovation will save us. This came from the comments section:. Collapse of Industrial Civilization. 2,843 more words.

Winter eggs | Foodnstuff

https://foodnstuff.wordpress.com/2015/07/04/winter-eggs

Energy decline and self-sufficiency from Melbourne, Australia. Laquo; The End of the Oil Age. I’m rapt that I’m still getting 3 or 4 eggs a week, despite the short winter days….the first time I’ve had it happen in four years of chicken-keeping. I don’t know why they’re like this now or which end comes out first; I’m just happy to be able to have my scrambled egg treat each week. Go Clover! Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). First attempt at red cabbage | Foodnstuff

https://foodnstuff.wordpress.com/2015/07/29/first-attempt-at-red-cabbage

Energy decline and self-sufficiency from Melbourne, Australia. Laquo; Around the blogs. First attempt at red cabbage. My neighbour told me her way of cooking red cabbage slice finely, steam gently till soft, add a dash of balsamic vinegar and a teaspoon of raw sugar. I tried it, liked it and thought: I’ve got to grow this. It wasn’t a great success. I sowed seed of the variety Red Acre from Eden Seeds in December last year and eventually put two seedlings into a wicking box :. Back to the drawing board.

Zeehan Manse: Benign Neglect

http://zeehanmanse.blogspot.com/2016/01/benign-neglect.html

Life At The Manse. Monday, 4 January 2016. Most of the plants are fruiting and the signs are looking good that something edible might be produced! The real test will be if they can survive now that I am here to look after them! Labels: Life at the Manse. 5 January 2016 at 22:32. The straw and chicken manure mix is excellent and it is good to see that you have almost total coverage of the vegetable beds. At least the chickens will help eat some of the bugs that develop. veggiegobbler: October 2012

http://veggiegobbler.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 30, 2012. My New Number One. I've got a new number one. Parsley. I know, I know I keep getting new favourites but parsley is surely it right now. And I promise I won't make a new number one anytime soon. As you may remember, I have been attempting to rid my garden of grass by filling all the spaces. So way back in winter I grew a load of parsley from seed and then I planted it everywhere. And now I am reaping the rewards. Loads and loads of parsley. Once they get over the disappointment ...

veggiegobbler: November 2012

http://veggiegobbler.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 29, 2012. Yesterday I was showing my friend Ms. C. around the garden and we were admiring the veggies and so on and then I decided to take the washing off the line. And Ms. C. was playing with Wokee the dog and admiring the garden a bit more. And then she remarked on the lovely passionfruit flowers. But I don't have a passionfruit vine. So I cranked my neck in the direction she was pointing and oh-my-googly-eyes I do have a passionfruit vine! Native creeper that has been plodding along...

http://veggiegobbler.blogspot.com/2013/04/garden-gobbles-spaghetti-squash-fritters.html

Thursday, April 4, 2013. Garden Gobbles - Spaghetti Squash Fritters. This week I used the last of the spaghetti squash. Sounds impressive doesn't it? Like I had oodles and oodles of spaghetti squash just hanging off the fence over summer. Nope. Actually I had just the two. 8226; 1 spaghetti squash. 8226; 100g ricotta cheese. 8226; 2 eggs. 8226; a bunch of herbs from the garden. 8226; oil for frying. Drain on paper towel and serve with salad. Fiona from Arbordale Farm. April 4, 2013 at 8:54 AM. A friend g...

Restoring Mayberry: Things I learned from my first week as a beekeeper

http://restoringmayberry.blogspot.com/2015/06/things-i-learned-on-my-first-week-as.html

Learning to be self-sufficient in rural Ireland. Saturday, 13 June 2015. Things I learned from my first week as a beekeeper. First of all, everything you do will be wrong, at least according to someone, and that’s okay. Thus, we make do - I chose a place in a corner of our woodland, facing the bog-land and its fields of wildflowers, but wove trimmed stalks of elder between tree stumps to form a wattle-fence around part of it, sheltering it from our fierce winds. You also need a bee suit, a one-piece outf...

Zucchini Island: Where did my Calcium go?

http://zucchiniisland.blogspot.com/2014/05/where-did-my-calcium-go.html

Follow a family on a journey towards self sufficiency. Is it possible for a suburban family with no gardening background to produce 80% of their own fruit and veg? What is this about? Friday, May 23, 2014. Where did my Calcium go? Despite the garden being reasonably successful over recent months. In April I blogged about how I was having an infestation of mallow weed. So with all this complexity how was I going to know if I had calcium deficiency? Advice, my long term strategy is to do what I should have...

Foodnstuff | Energy decline & self-sufficiency from Melbourne, Australia

Energy decline and self-sufficiency from Melbourne, Australia. March 19, 2018. I haven’t written anything here for a while, because, well…….summer was very depressing, with too many ultra-hot days which scorched the fruit on the trees and cooked the tomatoes on the plants and kept me busy just trying to keep ahead of the weather. So all in all, there’s not a happy garden out there. But I’ve just noticed something to gladden the heart. My turmeric is flowering for the first time! And then I noticed this:.
