Merlin and Rebecca: Castle Hunting: Kizkalesi Castles
http://merlinandrebecca.blogspot.com/2012/02/castle-hunting-kizkalesi-castles.html
Castle Hunting: Kizkalesi Castles. You know you’ve arrived in Kizkalesi when you spot the floating castle. Sitting some thousand feet offshore, it’s the focal point for this sandy little town in southern Turkey. Walking the beach or sitting in a deserted shorefront bar, the "Maiden" castle is pretty much the best and only thing to look at. White stone is, and how anything built with the stuff seems ancient almost by default. A land bridge was built to connect the two castles, doubling as a breakwater.

Merlin and Rebecca: Castle Hunting: Kamyanets Podilsky
http://merlinandrebecca.blogspot.com/2011/02/castle-hunting-kamyanets-podilsky.html
Castle Hunting: Kamyanets Podilsky. We are in the town of Kamyanets Podilsky, which is hard to sum up and difficult to describe. The old town is isolated on a rock island above a deep gorge, with two high bridges spanning the gap. Rebecca will have more on the town itself, eventually. Some of the structure has been reconstructed, but it is largely whole. The inner defensive walls are remarkably low, in part because the cliffs surrounding the main defenses are so steep. This is the view of the castle from...

Merlin and Rebecca: Castle Hunting: The Ones That Got Away
http://merlinandrebecca.blogspot.com/2014/05/castle-hunting-ones-that-got-away.html
Castle Hunting: The Ones That Got Away. We visited, by my informal calculations, about seventy-five or eighty castles on the trip, and all of them were memorable in some way. We explored the dungeons by lantern-light at snowy Pils Cēsis. In Latvia, and dodged stray dogs at Soroca, Moldova. There were floating castles at Kizkalesi. Recent ruins in the Bosnian hills ( Ostrožac. And brash Monagasque palaces. Maybe Malbork Castle, the headquarters of the Teutonic Order. Did you know they were based in Poland?

Merlin and Rebecca: Castle Hunting: Palamidi Fortress
http://merlinandrebecca.blogspot.com/2012/03/castle-hunting-palamidi-fortress.html
Castle Hunting: Palamidi Fortress. Far down below, in the calm blue water of Nafplio harbor, sits another part of this complex – the languid, water-grey folly of Bourtzi. It sits prim and pretty, watching over a few bobbing pleasure boats and the waterside cafes. These are relics from the last age of castles, when they were built out of protocol, instead of real need. Reminding us of Kizkalesi’s twin castles. The higher castle was built by the Venetians between 1711 and 1714, part of their ever expanding...

Merlin and Rebecca: Castle Hunting: Castillo de Olite
http://merlinandrebecca.blogspot.com/2011/11/castle-hunting-castillo-de-olite.html
Castle Hunting: Castillo de Olite. Before Versaille and the Royal Palace of Madrid, before the Winter Palace and Buckingham, when western Europe was a fragmented and warlike place, the kings of Navarre constructed one of the greatest royal residences of the middle ages. Rising high above the tiny village of Olite, the incredible Castillo de Olite was once among the largest, grandest and most luxurious seats in Europe. Sadly, most of the interiors and an appreciable amount of the infrastructure were destr...
