Gardening in the Zone

Gardening in the Zone. Birds in the Garden. For me, gardening and birding go hand-in-hand. One activity enriches the other. In my gardening journal, I note the migration of birds, and birds that stay near us year-round. On a cold winter day like today, I like to read my entries:. Rch 19, 2005: Outside the kitchen window, I saw the first red-winged blackbird of the season, feeding alongside some grackles. March 4, 2000: Sighted male and female bluebirds at end of property, near the bluebird house. The sec...

Gardening in the Zone: My Potting Shed

http://gardeninginthezone.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-potting-shed.html

Gardening in the Zone. Located by the old apple tree, my potting shed is as utilitarian as it is. With a horseshoe over its doors for gardening luck, everything I need is here: shovels, hoes, tools, plant cages, trays, stakes, pots, fertilizer, and wheelbarrow. Everything, except the tiller. The tiller was sold a few weeks ago after deciding to retire the main vegetable garden in favor of raised beds. On the outside, my brother-in-law added siding and new shingles about 10 years ago. The renovations ...

Gardening in the Zone: Peaches & Cream Corn

http://gardeninginthezone.blogspot.com/2010/07/peaches-cream-corn.html

Gardening in the Zone. Peaches and Cream Corn. As I mentioned in an earlier post, this year I planted Burpee's Peaches and Cream bicolor sweet corn. The kernels were true to their name - peach and cream colored, plump and sweet. The corn was ready for harvest approximately 70 days after planting. The corn stalks were six feet high by the Fourth of July. In Ohio we have the saying, "Knee high by the Fourth of July"; which is the benchmark for corn to attain to be on target for summer harvest. From the Fru...

Gardening in the Zone: A Home-Grown Lunch

http://gardeninginthezone.blogspot.com/2010/07/home-grown-lunch.html

Gardening in the Zone. This is the reason why I get dirty; bend and beat up my middle age body, endure cold and heat:. The harvest is sweetest when it is seasoned with one's own labor. Today, I enjoyed Arapaho blackberries sprinkled with table sugar and a crisp, green leaf lettuce salad with slices of "Fire n Ice" radishes* and "Super Snappy" peas*. I'll also replant some peas and radishes for fall harvest. Seeds are from Burpee. Posted by Noll's Nip. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Trail of Pansies.

Gardening in the Zone: Variegated Cat Grass

http://gardeninginthezone.blogspot.com/2010/08/variegated-cat-grass.html

Gardening in the Zone. Variegated Cat Grass is a pretty little plant. I won’t lie. I did not buy these annual seeds purely for my cats' enjoyment. Rather, I bought them because the catalog's photograph also appealed to me. This particular cat grass has either solid green or translucent white blades. I think the juxtaposition of the two colors is striking. If you look closely, you'll see, the jagged edges of the blades prove it’s not just a pretty little thing; it’s also mighty tasty. Gardening in the Zone: A Trip to the Greenhouse

http://gardeninginthezone.blogspot.com/2010/05/trip-to-greenhouse.html

Gardening in the Zone. A Trip to the Greenhouse. This past weekend, I visited my local greenhouse. Like me, it appeared the owners were a little late getting started - there were fewer flowers; or, more likely, I missed the rush and came in at the end of it ;). Still, smaller selection aside, a trip to the greenhouse is almost as delicious as a trip to the candy store. Needless to say, I was finally on a roll. I also planted three rows of Bush Lake 47 Green Beans (a compact, bush variety which harves...

Gardening in the Round

Gardening in the Round. Framing plants within containers, the camera lens, and the earth. Thursday, June 19, 2014. Watering While Away - Just Add Wine. Keeping your plants 'hydrated' while you fly off to fun adventures is always a bit of a conundrum. Unless you have some form of automatic watering system in place, you must turn to begging or borrowing - especially when it comes to containers. Usually its due to how they were watered. Gardening in the UP

Sunday, September 2, 2012. My plant did very well that first year and I was very impressed. It really was drought resistant and just kept getting bigger until it was killed by frost. But…… that isn’t what I like best about it. The best thing is , I haven’t had to buy this plant again. It is a extremely proficient reseeder. (spell check is telling me this isn’t a word). This is a picture of a few of this years plants. In this wider shot, you can see more starting. Till next time,. I garden in the Upper Pe...

Gardening In Tucson

Gardening… Surviving Tucson In the Garden. Help, Site Help. Lamont on June 21st, 2009. Read the rest of this entry ». Lamont on December 6th, 2014. Taking advantage of the mild local climate, this year I decided to protect my garden from the frost. In previous years I’d let the plants fend for themselves. Without taking extraordinary steps I kept it simple and simply domed over the tomatoes with semi opaque (clear would probably do better) plastic from Harbor Freight. Read the rest of this entry ».
