Friday, July 31, 2015. Little (not quite native) Orchid. This little orchid, Helleborine orchid, that I thought was native , is actually an introduction from Europe. It likes to grow in the shadier areas of our lawn and garden, or pop up in a flower bed. It is a perennial and in some parts of the US is considered invasive, but it certainly is not aggressive where we are in Ontario. It's an easy plant to miss because this is what it looks like from above - not very exciting with dull brownish flowers.

Friday, May 22, 2015. OH, NO, FROST. The garbage cans are covering the cloched cantaloupes. I really hope they survive because I can't replace them at the garden centre. Geraniums and statice under the floating row cover. Don't know how much protection that will give them but they can be replaced. The nicotiana is a little hardy so I hope it will still be standing in the morning. A slightly bent but very much alive tomato. May 22, 2015 at 7:50 PM. Finger crossed the forecast is wrong! Saturday, July 25, 2015. Not plants, I know, but honestly the geese have been reproducing like crazy this year. This group started as 3 adults. Now the babies have matured and the number has swelled to 15 or so. Earlier in the summer, we saw at the local park two pairs of geese with at least 30! Babies. Could be an idea for a horror movie: Invasion of the Honkers. This pretty fireweed is quite civilized. Only a few plants growing in a weedy patch. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Monday, August 3, 2015. The pink fibrous begonias in the pots are super dependable bloomers in half-shade. Annual scabiosca (pincushion flower) blooming very freely, although the plants are floppy. Dragonwing begonia has luscious shiny leaves and lots of flowers. Nasturtiums are an inexpensive way for some bright colour as they can be seeded directly in the garden in the spring. A peegee type hydrangea that brightens up a rough corner of the garden. John "By Stargoose And Hanglands". Lets See That Again.

Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Museum of Nature, Ottawa. It says Victoria Memorial Museum, but it has been called the Museum of Nature for a long time. Saturday, May 30, 2015. I saw a few of these Hobomok skipper butterflies feeding on some of the flowers this afternoon. A quick check online led me to believe they were Mulberry Wing skippers, but a further ckeck showed me my mistake. They are very similar, but the pattern on the wing is slightly different. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. OK, I'm trying again with some short videos. At least the pictures showed up this time. These are really audios of some of the bird songs I hear on our property. The flower is native Dutchman's Britches and the squeaky bird calls are made by the Downy Woodpeckers. We have quite a few woodpeckers in our bush as we let some of the dead trees stay standing.
