Gopher in Cologne

Sunday, July 27, 2008. Continual Development - Final Post. Sadly, on Tuesday I board a plane and return to the United States. I'm excited to see friends and family, but slightly depressed that I have to leave my adopted home. I want to thank all of you that continued to read my blog. I have received many e-mails of enthusiasm over my writing during these four months, and it has really meant a lot to me. I don't think so, because in the long run, my life will ultimately be judged by how good of a person, ...

Gopher in Cologne: Study Break

http://www.gopherincologne.blogspot.com/2008/07/study-break.html

Monday, July 7, 2008. A group of us managed to take a study break Saturday night. We went to Bonn for an outdoor music festival. Before we arrived, I was excited to catch the action. What better way to spend a nice Saturday night then hanging out outside listening to music. Despite the sunny weather all day though, an annoying drizzle managed to fall most of the time we were there. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Continual Development - Final Post. Goats, Beethoven, Chocolate, and Cologne.

Gopher in Cologne: June 2008

http://www.gopherincologne.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 24, 2008. Sorry for not updating the blog for a week. I was in Munich from Wed - Sun, and didn't have time to update it before I left. I hope I'm keeping my audience intrigued, even if my mother is the only person left reading this thing. On a side note, I do appreciate those that have stuck with me so far! From the Olympic complex, we walked over to the BMW headquarters and museum (pictured). What a treat that was! Although Friday was a blast, and we enjoyed what many people go to Munich t...

Gopher in Cologne: April 2008

http://www.gopherincologne.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 27, 2008. This weekend was a bit interesting. Friday was the big semester party at the Mensa, which is the main eating facility on campus. The party stretched three levels, had four different rooms playing four different types of music, and about 4000 students. Very fun. That was followed by an 8 am alarm going off and telling me that it was time to go to Phantasialand. Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Social Scene in Cologne. It's very common here to stay out until 5-6 in the morning. I have...

Gopher in Cologne: Ole Super Deutschland

http://www.gopherincologne.blogspot.com/2008/07/ole-super-deutschland.html

Thursday, July 3, 2008. Well it was an exciting finish to the European Soccer (Fußball) Championship. Unfortunately, Germany lost in the final to Spain. In the end, the best team did win, but the Germans put together a spirited effort. Needing a break from the crowd after our Munich trip, we watched the game in the comfort of a flat surrounded by a handful of friends. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Gopher in Cologne: EU Overload

http://www.gopherincologne.blogspot.com/2008/07/eu-overload.html

Thursday, July 10, 2008. The beginning of the end got underway this week with our final presentations for my Political System of the EU class. I have spent the past few weeks compiling information, and writing the paper that is to accompany the presentation. After working on it for so long, I am a bit tired of reading and talking about EU humanitarian aid efforts. Here's the line-up of all the topics we discussed:. The Role of the European Parliament. Europe as an Empire. The European Neighborhood Policy.

Köln: Eighteen Days Remaining

http://stashaler.blogspot.com/2008/07/eighteen-days-remaining.html

Monday, July 14, 2008. I am in the midst of my last finals here in Cologne and need a break from studying; a random post on the blog I am hoping will help me recharge. 1) My mistress Jessica - calm down, it's just the name I've given to my Ducati Monster. Since summers in Minnesota are short, riding my bike is definitely something I'd like to take advantage of once I am back. 3) Dinner at Pancho Villa (or El Loro). I am craving good Mexican food, who would have thought about it? Before I can get back hom...

Köln: Paris-Versailles

http://stashaler.blogspot.com/2008/07/paris-versailles.html

Saturday, July 19, 2008. I saved the trip to Paris for last not through some well thought-out process, but just that it simply worked out that way. I am glad Paris was my last cultural-learning travel for two reasons: 1. It is the most expensive place (after London), had I come earlier it would have made me worry about the budget for other travels; and 2. What a great way to end my Euro tour? After the Eiffel Tower tour I headed back to the hotel. I had to, of course, stop for a nice, freshly made cr...

http://stashaler.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 27, 2008. Here is an update on my recent trip to Prague, Czech Republic. Pictures and text. Well I spoke to her in my native Serbo-Croat (omitting case declination on purpose), pronouncing every word really slowly while accompanying each one by international hand signals….I said: “jedna voda, velika i ovaj sendvič” (One water, big, and this sandwich). She understood me and off we were to Prague. After this long walk, we decided to leave visiting the Castle, Petrin Tower, Jewish Quarters, and...

Köln: Europameisterschaft 2008

http://stashaler.blogspot.com/2008/07/europameisterschaft-2008.html

Friday, July 4, 2008. I have been so caught up narrating my travel experiences on this blog that I almost forgot to write about probably the biggest event in Europe this summer, which was of course the European Soccer Championships. Another compliment goes to the German people after losing the final game. If you had walked through the streets of Cologne that night, you would have thought Germany had won the title. I can only imagine how great of a celebration it would have been had they actually ...Curre...

Köln: Köln Lichter

http://stashaler.blogspot.com/2008/07/kln-lichter.html

Saturday, July 12, 2008. Last night I took a well-deserved break from studying and went to one of the biggest summer events in Cologne: Köln Lichter. It is a fireworks show on the Rhein river that draws roughly a million visitors each summer. The fireworks are launched from a barge between Deutzer Brücke (bridge) and another bridge that leads to the central station and the Dom. The item that impressed me the most is the ability to somehow light up the Rhein river and launch smaller fireworks from the wat...

Köln: April 2008

http://stashaler.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 22, 2008. We were told that it is great to take a ferry from Köln down to Mainz and enjoy the sights from the boat. We had dinner at an Italian restaurant in middle of the Old Town. Going in I thought we were going to pay an arm and a leg for our meals, but it was actually very affordable. And the food was great. All of the waiters and cooks were from Italy, so the level of authenticity was quite high. Well that’s all for now folks. Thursday, April 17, 2008. I have been lousy at writing mo...

Monday, June 30, 2008. Surfing USA - well no, in Munich. For those of you who have not been to Munich, there is a crazy spot not far from the city center, just inside the English Gardens. The river that runs through here (Isar) creates a nice wake just in front of a bridge. Some people take the opportunity to surf. It is a sight worth seeing. Who would have ever thought surfing would be a popular sport in Munich? I must admit that Berlin's Olympic Stadium is more of a sight but Munich's Olympic Center an...
