Catching Fire | Gradually Grokking in NYC
https://graduallygrokkingnyc.wordpress.com/2013/12/07/catching-fire
Gradually Grokking in NYC. 8220;Spies’ Dragnet Reaches a Playing Field of Elves and Trolls” – NY Times →. December 7, 2013. Everyone’s talking about it….I hope. The movie deserves it. It’s rare that a book is so faithfully and yet masterfully translated to screen. I thought “Catching Fire” was a nearly perfect movie, and in fact I enjoyed it much more than I ever enjoyed the novel. After dinner my friend and I went to our traditional spot, the Hummus Place. The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt | Gradually Grokking in NYC

Gradually Grokking in NYC. A People’s Tragedy: The Russian Revolution, by Orlando Figes. More from the NY Times on surveillance →. The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt. December 15, 2013. I’ll be honest; I didn’t get this book. My expectations seemed to run parallel to its trajectory the story never went where I thought it would, and while often that’s a good thing, in this case it was just confounding. And differs from my favorite work of hers, The Little Friend. A very lucky coincidence (Theo would say there’...

Gradually Grokking in NYC. The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt. On vacation →. More from the NY Times on surveillance. December 16, 2013. The NYTimes Bits blog published a piece yesterday called, Internet’s Sad Legacy: No More Secrets. The article ends by quoting Ben Wizner of the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy and Technology project, saying that tracking technologies have outpaced democratic controls, and that technologists are capable of building tools that can prevent such snooping. Or is there another way? Related...

Gradually Grokking in NYC. A People’s Tragedy: The Russian Revolution, by Orlando Figes →. 8220;Spies’ Dragnet Reaches a Playing Field of Elves and Trolls” – NY Times. December 9, 2013. There was a pretty amusing NYTimes article. Today on NSA monitoring of online gaming. Most of it is a laughable display of taxpayer dollars going to waste, but there are a few things that jump out as particularly concerning. All information contained within these games is owned and monitored. The Pentagon worked with a pr...
The Circle, by Dave Eggers | Gradually Grokking in NYC

Gradually Grokking in NYC. 17 days left →. The Circle, by Dave Eggers. December 20, 2013. Hey look, it’s a book all about my greatest fears! This was both a can’t-put-it-down book and a throw-it-against-the-wall book for me. But more on that later. First, a quick summary. That’s all fascinating, Carolyn, but was it any good? My spoilery reflections on the book follow. The cult of The Circle. The Circle as Parable. It ends, after all, with Mae suggesting the invention of the thought police. I didn’t...

Life as a gradually grokking gaijin. One cool thing about teaching. And not only do you. To use all of those aspects of yourself on a daily basis – you. To use them, in order to reach the students. It’s pretty cool. So here, have a picture of sakura:. I didn’t post any pics this year because I really didn’t get any good ones, sadly! But I like this shot of some blossoms near my house.). Stuff wot I made. In this entry, I’ll share a bunch of things that I’ve made recently! How could I forget? There are ac...

Perfection | Tara-sensei's Blog

Life as a gradually grokking gaijin. Bicycles are a perfect invention. I know I’m not the first to realize this, but it is the smartest and best way to travel. It runs purely on human energy, no fuel required. And yet it still obtains speeds that dramatically surpass our abilities on foot. With almost no effort, I can bike 3 times as fast as I can walk. With a little effort and help from physics, I can bike 5 times faster than I can run. And yet, I exert less energy. And it works perfectly. Notify me of ...

Life as a gradually grokking gaijin. Tokyo, Sayonara, The End. Tokyo is an incredible, vast, diverse city. It is the Japan of our dreams, the one we picture when we think of futuristic billboards, technology, quirky fashions, and so on. This is Shinjuku Crossing, kind of like Times Square, only crazier. I sat on the 2nd floor of a Starbucks and watched the crowds:. I’m now back in New York City, and my Japanese life feels so far away it might as well never have happened. This will be the last entry for t...

Life as a gradually grokking gaijin. Almost 2 years ago, I mentioned that my town was most famous for its really big tree. But it turns out I got the wrong tree! The real one is much more exciting. This is the tree Kurogi is famous for:. There are actually over a dozen wisteria trees all gathered around a shrine, some over 600 years old! Here’s another shot, of me and a local friend:. And some more pretty pics:. And on the weekends, there’s a wacky town festival to go along with the flowers:. You are com...

Life as a gradually grokking gaijin. Young rice, and reflections. In addition to wanting to cheer the young plants on. I just like the annual ritual of seeing them sprout up. Japan, or at least Fukuoka, is a place where the planting of rice still makes the nightly news. The other day, I stopped for several minutes to watch a neighboring farmer maneuver his transplanter around a small rice plot, dropping row after row of spiky bundles into the muddy earth. I thought it was newsworthy, too. Tokyo is an inc...

Life as a gradually grokking gaijin. English club bulletin board! Here’s a shot of June’s bulletin board, which reports on fun things my English Club did. If you can’t read the text, it says, in very simple language: “We had a Halloween part… …And a Christmas party! We baked cupcakes. We wrote to students in the USA. We played games… …And we watched many movies! One cool thing about teaching. Korea in my Seoul! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Address never made public). My time in Ja...

Life as a gradually grokking gaijin. On my school website! Http:/ kishou.fku.ed.jp/event cal/pub/detail.aspx? This was my farewell ceremony, held in the school gym (like all assemblies). The principal said what I hope were some very nice things in Japanese, and then those two adorable kids in the 3rd pic – student government leaders – made a goodbye speech on behalf of the students. And gave me some lovely flowers. It was all very sweet! Last day in Chikugo →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. My time in Japan...

Life as a gradually grokking gaijin. As usual, I biked to Mt. Kiyomizu on Sunday. Even though it was a little rainy, I wanted to spend some quiet time in my favorite temple. Sadly, I climbed the wet mountain only to find that the temple was closed! And yet… it was my best visit yet. A man wearing geta. While gazing at the temple’s beautiful garden. You can listen to him play the shaku-hachi for yourself! Here is one of his videos on YouTube:. The temple also offered a vegetarian meal on that day, an exam...

I live in Fukuoka Prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu, where I teach English through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program. And i’m turning 38…. Every year as I approach my birthday I try and reflect on what I’ve learned the previous year. This year, hands down the most valuable lesson I have learned is about being humble. Embrace being a parent of a teenager and realizing EXACTLY what the hell “patience” REALLY means. This past year I’ve also learned to face and accept my shortcomings…(yes, I am not perfect! Bring on. 38. RIP papa Dave, I miss you and think about you every day! 2012…that’s a wrap…. As I re-read my blog entry...
