Adventures on the European Continent

Adventures on the European Continent. Sunday, May 3, 2009. For the past four months, where ever I went in Europe, I found Rome. London, Paris, and Spain are filled with Roman ruins, Catholic churches, and street vendors selling knock-off Prada handbags. In fact, I even found Ferrer Rocher gelato in the Canary Islands. So with only 13 days left until my return to the States, I jetted off to Italy to experience Rome itself. The Coliseum looked out on downtown ancient Rome: the Forum. The famous Julius Caes...

Adventures on the European Continent: February 2009

http://grandtour09.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Adventures on the European Continent. Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Under the Mediterranean Sun. The main attraction in Gibraltar is the Rock. To the ancient Greeks and Romans, this was one of the legendary Pillars of Hercules and marked the end of the known world. The Pillars of Hercules are depicted by the red stripes on the Spanish flag and by the two columns that flank the Royal Crest of Spain. And I couldn't resist a Delta Gamma salute beside the anchor. The dark gray halfway from the bottom of this...

Adventures on the European Continent. Monday, January 26, 2009. A step back in time: Toledo, Spain. Toledo as viewed from the opposite hill across the Tajo River. Toledo's history actually goes back to the Roman provinence of Hispania. Back then the Romans had a fort and a settlement where the town is today. A bridge is still standing as is the original castle. Visitors can also see the ruins of the Roman baths and circus as well as a couple of remaining pillars from the aqueduct. Roman bridge and castle.

Adventures on the European Continent: April 2009

http://grandtour09.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Adventures on the European Continent. Saturday, April 11, 2009. Happy Easter from Spain! I took advantage of the Spanish tradition of going on vacation for Holy Week to experience more of southern Spain. However instead of heading to the beach, I stayed inland in the ancient cities of Cordoba and Sevilla. The Christians continued to use the same architecture in the Cathedral as they added chapels to the building. Cordoba has lots of patios and alleys. Every May they have a Festival of Patios where ea...

Adventures on the European Continent: March 2009

http://grandtour09.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Adventures on the European Continent. Sunday, March 29, 2009. Oo La La, Paris! Napoleon is buried in the chapel at Les Invalides. One of the best things about Paris is that they allow pictures inside all ofthe museums and churches, so I was able to get pictures of many of the things that I saw, including Napoleon's tomb. While in the neighborhood, we went across the street from Les Invalides to see the Thinker. And later found the opera house that inspired the Phantom of the Opera. The Louvre seen throug...

Grand Tour 1932

Friday, February 27, 2009. Letter 20: Hotel Metropole, Brussels. March 20, 1933. I have told you of the charming and restful nine days we had in this unique city. There should be mentioned our visit to the glass-blowing factory. The men demonstrated the making of a beautiful Murano vase. You all know how beautiful and expensive this ware is. We bought some cute little fish and an animal or two. In Venice we were only four minutes from the Accademia. Although there are over 3000 carved figures they do not...
