Greenpossum in 1993

My trip to Spain in 1993. Sunday, 30 May 1993. I arrived early at the bus terminal underneath Plaza de Colón. At the airport there was a vast row of check-in counters. Mine was the first flight of the day and I was the first check-in. Some passengers looked like they had spent the night in the airport. And so it was farewell to Spain for now. I would not be back until 2004 when I visited the Canary Islands, via Barcelona. Even with a month in hand, I had covered little ground. It's. As I write this in 20...

Greenpossum in 1993: San Sebastián 2 – Igueldo

http://www.green-possum-1993.blogspot.com/1993/05/san-sebastian-2-igueldo.html

My trip to Spain in 1993. Tuesday, 25 May 1993. San Sebastián 2 – Igueldo. For lunch I went to the barrio. Where a bit of searching turned up a place serving a menu del dia. Which was a merluza. Dish, accompanied by a glass of white wine. After the siesta, it was raining again, so I went to the CD store and bought a handful of CDs. I hoped I had enough pesetas left for the last few days. I walked past the Teatro Victoria Eugenia. I caught a bus to the base of Igueldo. The air was humid, yet skin dried qu...

Greenpossum in 1993: Toledo

http://www.green-possum-1993.blogspot.com/1993/05/toledo.html

My trip to Spain in 1993. Friday, 28 May 1993. There were two choices for a day trip out of Madrid, Toledo. For better or worse, I picked the former. After a breakfast of cafe con leche. I caught a train from Madrid Atocha to Toledo, a distance of about 80 km. It was a hot and sunny day. Is the most imposing building in Toledo. It gained fame when the nationalists held it against adverse odds during the Spanish Civil War. Today it's a military museum and has displays of armour and such. Snack and a siest...

Greenpossum in 1993: Madrid 2

http://www.green-possum-1993.blogspot.com/1993/05/madrid-2.html

My trip to Spain in 1993. Sunday, 9 May 1993. A feeling of unreality was starting to form. Travel is totally absorbing and there are only snatches of time for reflection. At times it felt like I was observing somebody else travel, someone who happened to inhabit my body. The hostal. Had the usual night noises, buzzer going, bell ringing. Some dust managed to penetrate indoors. It was Sunday so I went to El Rastro. Workers Party election poster. In empleo no hay futuro. No future without employment).

Greenpossum in 1993: Barcelona 2

http://www.green-possum-1993.blogspot.com/1993/05/barcelona-2.html

My trip to Spain in 1993. Sunday, 2 May 1993. The metro station at Fontana was deep in the bowels of the earth. At Plaça Catalunya. I exited and headed towards La Rambla. This is a wide tree-lined pedestrian mall flanked by access roads on both sides. The ground bears a mosaic pattern, something I was to see all over Spain. It is one of several famous Barcelona destinations and gets crowded quickly hence my early start. It was a dry cool morning at about 16C. Les Rambles. Past the bottom of Les Rambles.

Greenpossum in 1993: April 1993

http://www.green-possum-1993.blogspot.com/1993_04_01_archive.html

My trip to Spain in 1993. Friday, 30 April 1993. Every April 30th, the Dutch celebrate the national holiday Koninginnedag. Street sales of second-hand goods, will continue. It's fairly safe to assume that the orange theme, representing the House of Orange, will.). Many good jazz bands were playing at the cafe/bars. One establishment had put up a sign reading Geen WC (no toilet), and two arrows: - bier, WC - (pointing towards the canal). For a while without buying new goods. I ended the evening dining at ...

Greenpossum's first trip to Europe

Greenpossum's first trip to Europe. In the northern summer of 1982, having completed my masters in Sydney, I did the European tour, spending 3 months on the continent and 1 in UK. I started in Athens and ended in London. Tuesday, 14 September 1982. A life changing trip. I took this picture of the boarding gate for the Concorde. Service at Heathrow, another thing that has passed into history. This is not the plane I boarded, it was a Thai Airways flight as I recall. St Augustine of Hippo. I probably didn'...

Greenpossum in 1986

My road trip of Eastern Canada. Tuesday, 9 September 1986. Back to Rochester, NY. On her way out, M reminded me to lock up as I leave. Unfortunately I let the door slam with still one item of my baggage in. The flat. As luck would have it, it was the one with my passport. I. Couldn't get back into the States without that. I didn't want to bother. M at the office and I couldn't stand the idea of staying in. Montreal another day. So I tried the landlady. Unfortunately she was out. Half a dozen Molson.

Greenpossum in 1988

My road trip through Michigan, Ontario and Quebec in August 1988. Monday, 29 August 1988. Back to the US. I got up early the next morning and threw my pillow at the girls. They were sleep. Y-eyed and not in a mood to enjoy the joke. I cleaned myself and went downstairs to. Have a doughnut breakfast in the lobby. I read the morning paper while waiting. The headline of the day was an air show disaster in Germany. More troubles in the world, but I really wasn't interested; I was going shopping. So I was lef...

My trip to France, Portugal and South America (Brazil, Argentina and Chile) in 1997. Friday, November 14, 1997. I caught bus 86 to the airport and spent the rest of my pesos on a sandwich and a drink. We were a little late departing. A few hours into the flight, in the small hours of the morning, we had a refueling stop at Rio Gallegos. Was one of the pioneers in the opening up of routes to Patagonia, and his experiences formed the basis of his novel Night Flight. Labels: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It was...

My trip to Turkey in 2000. Sunday, July 2, 2000. I woke at 0500 and went up to the roof to watch the sunrise, and the still lit Aya Sofya and Blue Mosque against the daybreak. Then I went back to stretch the time until breakfast by reading the paper and doing my packing. Each room in the hotel had a poem. Mine was Listening to Istanbul. By Orhan Veli Kanik. Will I get stroked after doing what this strange human wants of me? On the board. Where the hell was that? I had retained a 1 million TL note as a ke...

My trip to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Germany. Saturday, July 7, 2007. Auf wiedersehen, Europa. German breakfasts are ample, there's no doubt about that. My flight was at noon, so I checked out after breakfast and was shuttled to the airport. Frankfurt Airport. Is huge, busy and efficient, but will never win any awards for elegance. It looks like a train station that just grew and grew. There were surprisingly few retailers. Maybe it had something to do with the renovations. The rain) Ever Stop? It was...

My trip to Brazil, Portugal (mainland and Madeira), Madrid, Paris. Sunday, November 1, 2009. I will pass this way but once. If I may turn this phrase to another use. To every local who helped me gain my bearings, or overlooked my massacre of your language while trying to communicate: obrigado e felicidade. To every fellow traveller who shared stories and tips: thank you, and may the way be smooth for you. And thanks to you dear reader for tolerating my rambles and jokes.
