Greenpossum in 2007

My trip to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Germany. Saturday, July 7, 2007. Auf wiedersehen, Europa. German breakfasts are ample, there's no doubt about that. My flight was at noon, so I checked out after breakfast and was shuttled to the airport. Frankfurt Airport. Is huge, busy and efficient, but will never win any awards for elegance. It looks like a train station that just grew and grew. There were surprisingly few retailers. Maybe it had something to do with the renovations. The rain) Ever Stop? It was...

Greenpossum in 2007: Cochem

http://www.green-possum-2007.blogspot.com/2007/07/cochem.html

My trip to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Germany. Thursday, July 5, 2007. My friend had to go back to her hometown to work and I would go down the Mosel. Yes, this is the region that gives its name to the wine.) I had decided to go straight to Cochem. And perhaps take some river cruises from there. And this is looking upriver. You can see some vineyards. I declined to do the castle tour, though it seemed popular with tourists; this was the queue for the next session. Before the waitress completed the name...

Greenpossum in 2007: Slovenija

http://www.green-possum-2007.blogspot.com/2007/06/slovenija.html

My trip to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Germany. Monday, June 11, 2007. I guess this is as good a time as any to introduce Slovenia. Slovenia has been compared to a Switzerland in the Balkans. The simile is because it is small in size (20,000 sq km), has a small population (2 million) and has varying landscapes. However, unlike Switzerland, it does have a bit of coastline, about 43 km worth, so the Spoonerism joke comparing the Swiss Navy with a vacuum cleaner doesn't transfer here. Or maybe even Slavonia.

Greenpossum in 2007: Hello Slovenia

http://www.green-possum-2007.blogspot.com/2007/06/hello-slovenia.html

My trip to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Germany. Sunday, June 10, 2007. Slovenia seems to have better rolling stock than Croatia from the carriages I've seen. It's like being on a western European train again. The train hugged the Sava. River, as this river joins the two capitals: Zagreb and Ljubljana. There were scenic spots, but it's not easy to take photos from a crowded fast moving train, and besides I dozed off at times. The statue is of France Prešeren. Their national poet. As befits a tragic r...

Greenpossum in 2007: Off to the Adriatic

http://www.green-possum-2007.blogspot.com/2007/04/off-to-adriatic.html

My trip to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Germany. Friday, April 27, 2007. Off to the Adriatic. After years of dreaming and months of planning, I'm finally going to the Adriatic. The Dalmatian Coast. Had always held a fascination for me as a destination. Besides its much praised beauty, it always felt exotic to me that a dog breed and a coast would share the same name. Listening to Joyce singing L'Étang. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Off to the Adriatic. My backpack goes missing. I suspect the prosci...

My trip to Brazil, Portugal (mainland and Madeira), Madrid, Paris. Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Of course, it really means fierce dog. So you might want to be wary of dishes like spag bol in Brazil. But in the story, first I have to arrive here, so bear with me. In the morning, I paid my hotel bill. I find that they only take Visa so I say Pago á vista. Which you see here. This vehicle has doors for every row and no windows. In total the journey took over 7 hours. The pousada I have chosen is quite nic...

My trip to Brazil, Portugal (mainland and Madeira), Madrid, Paris. Saturday, October 31, 2009. I have one day in Paris to see the beautiful Parisian women, er I mean, the beautiful Parisian landmarks. Anyway it looks like half the women here are tourists. No, make that about 90% from the number of cameras being whipped out. The last is a reworking of Olympia by Manet. So the French do have a sense of humour. Friday, October 30, 2009. http://green-possum-2009.blogspot.com/2009/10/madrid.html

My trip to Brazil, Portugal (mainland and Madeira), Madrid, Paris. Thursday, October 29, 2009. The Hotel Miau is very nice. Probably the best accommodation I will have this trip. Paris will cost more and probably be less comfy. I deserve some luxury at the end of this trip. Besides, how could I resist a name like Miau? They even have a pixellated cat for a logo. Puerta del Sol is where all distances in Spain are measured from and there is a Km 0 marker on the ground. There seem to be a lot of anti-GF...

My trip to Brazil, Portugal (mainland and Madeira), Madrid, Paris. Sunday, November 1, 2009. Charles de Gaulle airport should really have a 4-letter acronym so we fix that by inserting the great Aussie adjective. Terminal 2 is more conventional but rather strung out, like a chain of beads. I can't comment on Terminal 3 because I didn't use it. To be fair, the metro and RER B did deliver me to CdG comfortably and speedily. They do trains well in France. My trip to Brazil, Portugal (mainland and Madeira), Madrid, Paris. Sunday, November 1, 2009. I will pass this way but once. If I may turn this phrase to another use. To every local who helped me gain my bearings, or overlooked my massacre of your language while trying to communicate: obrigado e felicidade. To every fellow traveller who shared stories and tips: thank you, and may the way be smooth for you. And thanks to you dear reader for tolerating my rambles and jokes. My trip to Brazil, Portugal (mainland and Madeira), Madrid, Paris. Wednesday, September 16, 2009. Afé Guarany because the period decor looked fascinating. Incidentally FC Porto lost to Chelsea FC 1-0. There was a big screen in Guarany. Most of the diners were obviously visitors to Porto. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The AVE leaves at 1330 so I have time to explore a couple of the plazas. South of Huertas where I am staying is Lavapies. ( Lavapies t. An interesting pair of gender signs. After doing...

Greenpossum in 1988

My road trip through Michigan, Ontario and Quebec in August 1988. Monday, 29 August 1988. Back to the US. I got up early the next morning and threw my pillow at the girls. They were sleep. Y-eyed and not in a mood to enjoy the joke. I cleaned myself and went downstairs to. Have a doughnut breakfast in the lobby. I read the morning paper while waiting. The headline of the day was an air show disaster in Germany. More troubles in the world, but I really wasn't interested; I was going shopping. So I was lef...

My trip to Spain in 1993. Sunday, 30 May 1993. I arrived early at the bus terminal underneath Plaza de Colón. At the airport there was a vast row of check-in counters. Mine was the first flight of the day and I was the first check-in. Some passengers looked like they had spent the night in the airport. And so it was farewell to Spain for now. I would not be back until 2004 when I visited the Canary Islands, via Barcelona. Even with a month in hand, I had covered little ground. It's. As I write this in 20...

My trip to France, Portugal and South America (Brazil, Argentina and Chile) in 1997. Friday, November 14, 1997. I caught bus 86 to the airport and spent the rest of my pesos on a sandwich and a drink. We were a little late departing. A few hours into the flight, in the small hours of the morning, we had a refueling stop at Rio Gallegos. My trip to Turkey in 2000. Sunday, July 2, 2000. I woke at 0500 and went up to the roof to watch the sunrise, and the still lit Aya Sofya and Blue Mosque against the daybreak. Then I went back to stretch the time until breakfast by reading the paper and doing my packing. Each room in the hotel had a poem. Mine was Listening to Istanbul. By Orhan Veli Kanik. My trips to Hainan Island and Shanghai, China. Friday, October 28, 2011. Shanghai and Hong Kong. But we ended up waiting an hour on the tarmac anyway. Perhaps some connecting flight was delayed. I suspect punctuality suffers on internal Chinese routes. I was happy when we finally took off. We arrived in Hong Kong 35 minutes late. The pilots probably stepped on the pedal a bit, but I think the airline also schedules some leeway for this sector. Location: Pudong Airport Rd, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China.

My trip to the Balearic Islands in 2012. Sunday, October 14, 2012. Looking back, and ahead. And so, with a last morning stroll along Pinewalk on the foreshore of Port Pollença, my vacation in the Balearic Islands was at an end. All I had left to do was drive the rental car to the airport (and hope for no breakdown or traffic jams) and take off. What would I have done different? I dislike airports, especially crowded ones. My trips to Fiji and Chiang Mai (Thailand). Tuesday, 19 November 2013. I had decided not to walk in the city even though my flight wasn't until 1530. I didn't want to get all sweaty before an overnight flight. So I had a relaxed breakfast, showered, and took a tuk tuk to the airport at 1100. I would take it easy in the air-con, have lunch, then check in. Food is good in Thailand; it's hard to find a bad cook. Thai are so polite; the Wai. I liked the humid climate less, but better than Bangkok. Mosqui...
