My trips to Hainan Island and Shanghai, China. Friday, October 28, 2011. Shanghai and Hong Kong. But we ended up waiting an hour on the tarmac anyway. Perhaps some connecting flight was delayed. I suspect punctuality suffers on internal Chinese routes. I was happy when we finally took off. We arrived in Hong Kong 35 minutes late. My trips to Hainan Island and Shanghai, China. Thursday, March 31, 2011. Time to get a move on. Dadonghai was starting to look tacky and I suspected not representative of Hainan. I found a great deal on a hotel room in Boao through an Internet discounter as it was the slow season. Where I would catch local transport to the seaside town of Boao. Chris had told that bus 4 terminated at the rail station but would take nearly an hour. This proved to be so, I got a city tour of Sanya for the cost of 5RMB.

Sure, many streets were tree-lined, cooler and quieter than your average Shanghai street, but there were no major attractions of interest to me. My trips to Hainan Island and Shanghai, China. Thursday, October 27, 2011. The Oriental Pearl Tower. 东方明珠塔) has a futuristic look. I hoped to get a bird's eye view of the city from the observation deck. There is an elevated pedestrian walkway running all around the traffic roundabout, and in the middle of that is a topiary garden. The inside looks just as futuristic. Here we are waiting to board the elevator. The sightseeing floor at 263m has a 360 degree panoramic view. This is view is of The Bund.

My trips to Hainan Island and Shanghai, China. Thursday, October 27, 2011. 虹桥) Railway Station, I took the familiar line 2 to Pudong. Or the "bottle opener". This is Shanghai Tower. Which, if all goes according to plan, will be finished by 2014, and be second only to Burj Dubai as the tallest building in the world. Here I'm at the base of the Jin Mao. And this photo shows the elegant stepped design. Finally I reached the riverside promenade where I faced The Bund on the opposite bank. Sunday on the Bund.
