Located half way between Sacramento and Keddie, Oroville supports three industries that are worked by four through trains between Oakland and Salt Lake; two trains from Bieber and one local.

SACRAMENTO IS A FUN PLACE TO WORK. ALL EAST AND WEST BOUND WAYBILL TRAINS DROP AND PICKUP CARS HERE. THERE IS AN EAST BOUND SETOUT TRACK ON THE WEST END OF SACRAMENTO WHERE THE YARD MASTER SETS OUT THE EASTBOUND CARS SO THE ROAD CREWS CAN DO THEIR WORK OUTSIDE OF THE YARD. NOT SO ON THE WEST BOUNDS, THEY HAVE TO BACK INTO THE YARD TO DO THEIR PICKUPS AND SETOUTS. OAKLAND IS THE ONLY YARD THAT CAN WORK WITHOUT GETTING PERMISSION FROM THE DISPATCHER FOR CERTAIN MOVES.

The Western Pacific retained turntables into the diesel era as they ran A/B units that were required to be turned. The Shell station and the Mustang Dinner are located at the departure end of the Rio Grande yard. Arnolds’ Drive Inn provides a neat place for the local teenagers to gather on Saturday nights.
