The Heirs of Gilbert

The Heirs of Gilbert. Birds and wildlife of an English parish. Monday, 17 August 2015. Walking yesterday evening I was surprised to have a close encounter with this Barn Owl, I only had time to get one shot off and it’s not completely sharp but worth including anyway. Sunday, 16 August 2015. The first big numbers of Lapwing were also present today, with one flock totalling around 250 birds. As I watched these birds a mixed flock of 100 Sand Martins and ******** flew in to feed voraciously on the gnats an...

The Heirs of Gilbert: More moths

http://www.heirsofgilbert.blogspot.com/2015/07/more-moths.html

The Heirs of Gilbert. Birds and wildlife of an English parish. Monday, 20 July 2015. In the trapping session the other night there were a couple of moths that weren’t immediately identified, they turned out to be yet more new species’ for the parish. The first was this lovely Dot, this species has a more southerly distribution so a nice find for North Yorkshire. The second was this micro moth. And the third this. The Heirs of Gilbert: Summer's end

http://www.heirsofgilbert.blogspot.com/2015/08/summers-end.html

The Heirs of Gilbert. Birds and wildlife of an English parish. Sunday, 16 August 2015. This already feels the season of gatherings, the Swallows are making musical scores of the telegraph wires, Rooks and Jackdaws are swirling around in ever larger groups before flying off to roost and flocks of Starlings are buzzing over west to their evening haunts. The first big numbers of Lapwing were also present today, with one flock totalling around 250 birds. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Some blogs I follow.

The Heirs of Gilbert: Ton Up

http://www.heirsofgilbert.blogspot.com/2015/08/ton-up_57.html

The Heirs of Gilbert. Birds and wildlife of an English parish. Wednesday, 12 August 2015. The Parish year list has reached 100 species with the trapping and ringing of this young Reed Warbler in the Magic Garden. This is only the second modern record of reedie in the village and follows a bird seen around the same date last year. These are presumably migrants but there must be a chance of nesting soon given the establishment of good breeding populations at the local reserves? View my complete profile.

The Heirs of Gilbert: A Hebridean Interlude

http://www.heirsofgilbert.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-hebridean-interlude_11.html

The Heirs of Gilbert. Birds and wildlife of an English parish. Tuesday, 11 August 2015. Add in dolphins, orchids, Otters catching Salmon on the beach near our holiday cottage, a Red Deer stag racing the car, beautiful beaches and stunning views and it was really hard to beat. And for birders of course it has the added bonus of the famous St Kildan Wren, a sub-species unique to the archipelago. But what I hadn’t been prepared for was the sheer spectacle of the place. All in all well worth the nine hours of.

The Heirs of Gilbert: August 2015

http://www.heirsofgilbert.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

The Heirs of Gilbert. Birds and wildlife of an English parish. Monday, 31 August 2015. Walking back from picking damsons at Langlands a small bird flashed across as I climbed the stile. It was a male Stonechat, only the second one I have seen in the parish. The picture was taken at distance in heavy rain but at least you can see what it is…. I can only assume that it was the heavy rain brought down both of these birds within a few yards of each other. Year List to end of August 106 species. Along with Go...

Winyates Beasts: Sunday January 8

http://winyatesbeasts.blogspot.com/2017/01/sunday-january-8.html

Map of area covered. Sunday, 8 January 2017. Despite not birding here today, I managed to hear a Pied Wagtail. Through the fog as I returned from the paper shop. Also, lunchtime was enlivened by the sight of two Great Tits bathing in the recently relocated bird bath. I have put it further away from the kitchen window, which obviously makes the bathers feel safer. The disadvantage for me is that it is now rather hard to see through the masking branches of the shrubbery. Great Tit having a bath.

Winyates Beasts: November 2016

http://winyatesbeasts.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html

Map of area covered. Saturday, 19 November 2016. On the drive back from shopping we spotted a Little Egret flying across the road and down the Arrow just this side of Studley. We last saw it circling back over the Washford Mill pub. Thursday, 17 November 2016. Although I have not really seen a lot around the garden and its immediate environs since my last posting, I find I do have things to talk about. Sadly there was a flaw in our thinking. But fingers crossed eh. Changing the subject, I feel I need an ...

Winyates Beasts: Friday January 13

http://winyatesbeasts.blogspot.com/2017/01/friday-january-13.html

Map of area covered. Friday, 13 January 2017. We woke up to snow, but not much. Cold snaps are not what they once were. The Blackbirds in the garden seemed grateful for the extra apples I chucked out. A cold northerly wind after the snow turned to sleet and then stopped altogether. A couple of short walks produced the only year tick in the form of a Sparrowhawk. Most of the day was spent indoors, so the garden and its surrounds had to be relied upon to keep me interested. The Heirs of Gilbert.

Morton Bagot Birder: Tuesday 4 August

http://mortonbagotbirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/tuesday-4-august.html

Morton Bagot Life List. Flowers of Morton Bagot. My 2016 Year List. Where is Morton Bagot? Tuesday, 4 August 2015. This evening's visit to the patch can best be described as quiet. So I am particularly grateful to Jim Winsper and John Coombes who have independently contacted me to suggest the same identification for the big fish. It is a Grass Carp which is a native of south-east Asia but is often introduced into pools to munch away at the vegetation. As a herbivore (can fish be herbivores? Simple templa...

Morton Bagot Birder: June 2015

Morton Bagot Life List. Flowers of Morton Bagot. My 2016 Year List. Where is Morton Bagot? Sunday, 28 June 2015. After a disconcerting amount of early morning rainfall, I arrived to find it pepping up. It showed no sign of abating when Dave arrived. So we had a bit of a soggy start. As well as the Sedge Warbler singing in the reed-bed, the reverend Reed Warbler decided to give up his oath and also started singing on this Sunday. He can consider himself defrocked. Morton Bagot Life List. Flowers of Morton Bagot. My 2016 Year List. Where is Morton Bagot? Sunday, 31 May 2015. Pectoral Sandpiper - Salford Priors GP. Sitting at home, about to eat my lunch. The phone rings. It's Mike. He has found a Pectoral Sandpiper at Salford Prior GP near Alcester. Sharp exit. Sure enough, it was still present. Phew. Ringed Plover and Pectoral Sandpiper. Compared to a Ringed Plover, it was surprisingly slightly smaller. Perhaps a female. Dave and I were tempted back to the patch, w...

Morton Bagot Life List. Flowers of Morton Bagot. My 2016 Year List. Where is Morton Bagot? Monday, 3 August 2015. It's Monday Aug 3 and I have had a text from John Coombes to say he saw a Marsh Harrier flying over Coughton Lane towards Coughton Court at 10.30am. This is a great find for John. Borderlands Birding... and beyond: August 2016

http://borderlandsbirding.blogspot.com/2016_08_01_archive.html

Borderlands Birding . and beyond. Friday, 26 August 2016. For the first time in almost ten years of my involvement with Hen Harriers at Geltsdale we have a fledged chick. The young bird, the only one of a clutch of five eggs to hatch, flew twice this week during my eight hour session at the hut. The mist was coming and going from the area all day long as I viewed from here. And finally sunshine! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Simple theme. Powered by Blogger.

Borderlands Birding... and beyond: January 2017

http://borderlandsbirding.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html

Borderlands Birding . and beyond. Monday, 30 January 2017. Three of us Geltsdale Reserve Hen Harrier workers set off for the Humber Marshes before first light yesterday. We had harriers in mind but what we most of all hoped to see was a juvenile Pallid Harrier which had been reported intermittently at Welwick Saltmarsh since mid November 2016. The upper parts were very dark with the exception of the strikingly contrasting white rump and the discreet pale areas on the upper-wing coverts . The four 'finger...

The Heirs of Hammurabi

The Heirs of Hammurabi. Wednesday, December 14, 2005. Recently, the columnist W. Thomas Smith wrote. And despite what the cut-and-run crowd would have us believe, American troops on the ground are not deceptively recruited pawns in some unfortunate military adventure. U.S. soldiers and Marines in Al Anbar and elsewhere in Iraq know exactly what they are doing, and why. They also see the fruits of their labors, which, to their consternation, are rarely reported. Iraqi security forces growing or shrinking?

A Vietnam Veteran's Memoir. What Do YOU Know About the Vietnam War? What Do YOU Know About the Vietnam War? For e-book Click here.
