Nothing of interest to show for week 2 as I wagged off homework and in class we just explored different styles of line drawing. Was introduced to Ben Nicholson. 1894 - 1982) which was a surprise as I recognised a little of his style in mine though I can't think I've ever come across him before, being the numpty that I am. Ian russell's Artwork blog. Sunday, October 01, 2006. Art class: week 1 homework. Pen and ink (A4 sketchbook). In the first week at class we explored several mediums used to produce simple line drawings: hard graphite, soft graphite, carbon, charcoal, pen and ink, brush and ink, and stick and ink (the 'stick' being a short piece of bamboo cane). Ian russell's Artwork blog. Sunday, October 29, 2006. Art class : half term homework. Still life with pig. Charcoal on paper (550 x 400). During the half-term recess we were asked to consolidate what we'd practiced so far producing another still life arrangement of organic and non-organic objects. After the three apples piece in class, it was suggested I do another charcoal drawing using the mid-tone 'wash' technique and building tone and highlighting with a kneadable eraser. At the eleventh hour before class, I thought I'd better do some more homework to keep on side of teacher. the previous drawing wasn't 'tonal' enough so i attempted a charcoal sketched portrait from a photograph (I just couldn't face another still life just yet! It was a bit rushed and I cocked up the composition, hence the missing left eye which was cropped from the photo and should have been here - artistic licence!

Art doesn't impinge on my professional life in any form, I haven't had any formal art education since I was 13 - and even then all I recall is sticking bits of pasta to a small card and making a coiled clay pot. Week 4 at class comprised a choice of still life tonal rendering in either pencil, ink and brush or charcoal. still finding my feet yet not wanting to play too safe with pencil, I opted for the forgiving charcoal.
