Luckily, dealing with the Hilton folks in Colombo (once the reservation had been established) proved to be much easier. and it definitely helped that I was able to pull out my Diamond Status card (such a blessing on this trip! I also had time to thoroughly explore all that the hotel had to offer and get a workout in while Heather slept :). Then cleaned up and grabbed a late lunch before heading back to the airport. ...

When we returned to our rooms after a hot bath and dinner, a fire had been lit in the "oven" (wood burning stove) in our room and a hot water bottle had been placed under the MANY blankets in our beds to warm it up. Today was our first real day of trekking in the Himalayas- and oh what a beautiful day! Stunning views, fantastic terrain (a bit steep, but doable), rivers, waterfalls, bridges, charming little farming villages, hill side terraces of rice and vegetables, stunning winding rock stair cases up and around the mountain peaks. you get the point. None of this help with the uneasiness in the air. On the bright side, it seemed that the fact that this was our last day on the trail really lit a fire under Heather's feet. I should mentioned that the hike was made a bit easier by Heather, who insisted on me resting every 200 yards or so, and by Chencho and Ugyen, who insisted on carrying all of our things and provided us with walking sticks, water, and hot herbal tea- I'm going to miss being treated like a princess all the time.
