In the Field (Part 1) | Sarah Welsh-Huggins

https://globalsarahjoy.wordpress.com/2014/06/21/in-the-field-part-1

A beginner's guide to structural engineering with an open mind and a free spirit. In the Field (Part 1). June 21, 2014. Written morning of June 21. I, however, will be picked up at the airport by the local GHI taxi driver, to begin my Delhi adventures. With another two hours before we pile into our Aizawl taxis, I am sitting in my hotel room with a head full of long, meandering thoughts and a belly full of two weeks of good food. I wasn’t comfortable correcting their work, but on the two days I worked wi...

The Exhale | Sarah Welsh-Huggins

https://globalsarahjoy.wordpress.com/2014/06/28/the-exhale

A beginner's guide to structural engineering with an open mind and a free spirit. June 28, 2014. Last night, as I walked through the bustling streets of the Lajpat Nagar neighborhood near my hotel in Delhi, I was more relaxed than I have been during the entire past week. I strolled at my own pace, no one waiting for the next destination peering in shop windows at the striped, brightly-colored fabrics, stepping around samosa cart vendors, feeling my shirt slowly soaking with sweat and the smell of incense.

1,001 Tales | Sarah Welsh-Huggins

https://globalsarahjoy.wordpress.com/2014/06/24/1001-tales

A beginner's guide to structural engineering with an open mind and a free spirit. June 24, 2014. Lots more still to write about my time in Aizawl, but at the moment my head and my heart are full after a long drive through Rajasthan. The following was written on the drive from Delhi to Agra). I am having serious misgivings about being here. What right do I have to come play rich tourist in an area of such abject poverty? And now we are passing an elephant. On the highway. And yet, I am part of this cultur...

In the Field (Part 4) | Sarah Welsh-Huggins

https://globalsarahjoy.wordpress.com/2014/07/03/in-the-field-part-4

A beginner's guide to structural engineering with an open mind and a free spirit. In the Field (Part 4). July 3, 2014. We drove past the one-room thatched shops, past girls in white button-down shirts, green pleated skirts stepping out of the way for rumbling, dusty trucks. My taxi stopped in front of the wide, white AMC building. One final day of Sherlock Holmes engineering. Not long after I began to shift through today’s pile of folders, an old man wearing a dirty black t-shirt walked into the large cu...

A beginner's guide to structural engineering with an open mind and a free spirit. In the Field (Part 2). July 1, 2014. Cross-Atlantic air travel even Economy class is far from uncomfortable most days. A cozy wool blanket. Sufficient (for a person of 5’8 stature) leg-room. Free refills of red wine. Extensive in-flight movie options. Far from uncomfortable, and with far better lighting (even at 30,000 feet) than much of the Aizawl Municipal Council building. The five-story building (European style: ground ...

Back to the Future… Again | Sarah Welsh-Huggins

https://globalsarahjoy.wordpress.com/2014/06/29/back-to-the-future-again

A beginner's guide to structural engineering with an open mind and a free spirit. Back to the Future… Again. June 29, 2014. I’m in the middle of the long slog haul back to North America: 2:30 am departure from Delhi, seven hour layover in Frankfurt, 15 hour layover in Toronto (to be rescued briefly by Aunt Sandy and Co.), and then finally on to Denver. Yep, I got my hands on an exclusive for-your-and-your-grandmother’s-eyes-only copy of Andy Hayes Mystery Number 2. Thanks, Dad! And it’s a well-researched...

In the Field (Part 3) | Sarah Welsh-Huggins

https://globalsarahjoy.wordpress.com/2014/07/01/in-the-field-part-3-3

A beginner's guide to structural engineering with an open mind and a free spirit. In the Field (Part 3). July 1, 2014. There are questions. Questions that need answers, Frodo. As usual, dig deep enough for answers, and you get more questions. The head junior engineer, a Mr. L. (name shortened for privacy and for the sake of my non-Mizo auto-correct) wasn’t quite sure what to do with me when I arrived at his desk that Tuesday morning. And you want to make copies of the permits? I carefully pulled open the...

However a leisurely pace is what I am used to and what my body seems to work best with. You will most often find me hiking with the sweep on a hike or performing this role myself. When leading a hike, I will often appoint a lead hiker so I can walk among the group to allow myself to enjoy their conversation and observe how weaker hikers are doing. President, Hike Ontario.
