The Village of Phortse. The village has been assisted for many years by a British volunteer, Tony Freake J.P., who has funded and helped to construct a teacher's hostel, a medical clinic and a Buddhist monastery. He has also worked with the villagers to maintain their school, which is an old building in need of a lot of upkeep. More on Tony Freake.

The future is bright, the future is Phortse. Yes, we are planning to go back to Phortse, though exactly when has not been decided yet. There is much more to do in Phortse. The village development committee are working towards installation of a phone line and electricity into the region and the village. The next likely project will be to put in place the sub station buildings that will be required to facilitate electricity installation.

Himalayan Hands put a lot of effort into training and preparation for the expedition. This training took many forms including: First Aid, Language, Kit, Culture, Health and Hygiene, and Physical fitness. The training was split into two main areas: General Expedition Training and Individual Team Training. As well as all these activities the Phortse team spent many weekends walking with and without packs to get used to the strenuous exercise that would be involved with walking and working at altitude.
