Himalayan Happenings: Ihi and Bahra
http://himalayanhappenings.blogspot.com/2015/04/ihi-and-bahra.html
Letters Home from Nepal. Saturday, April 4, 2015. Do you know what those are? If this is too long, feel free to read it in two parts! Don't worry if you're not from here and you don't know. I didn't know what they were before I moved here. They are types of marriages. Yes! I have never been to an Ihi ceremony, but I have been to (parts of) two Bahra ceremonies. Here's how I learned about the Ihi ceremony. One of my little female students was absent for a few days. When she returned to school,. The first ...

Himalayan Happenings: May 12 Earthquake!
http://himalayanhappenings.blogspot.com/2015/05/may-12-earthquake.html
Letters Home from Nepal. Thursday, May 14, 2015. May 12- another earthquake! My word- it was the very next day after I posted the last post! It was scary, I won't sugarcoat it. We didn't have time to pray! This is why I'm glad we prayed in the morning! I've been working at home, because my new office is on the third floor of the hospital. And I didn't really want to go up there! So, anyway, I was called up there for something. I've been afraid to come up here for longer than a minute! Say it isn't so!

Anyway, here in Nepal, I was happy to note when we got here, there are many shopping options available for everyone, no matter what your preferences are! You may recognize this store's name! It's in the tourist part of Kathmandu called Thamel,. But when you're in heavy traffic,.

Adventuring in Nepal: Long Enough
http://sloopernepal.blogspot.com/2011/02/long-enough.html
Monday, February 21, 2011. I’ve been here 8 months. I have 8 days left. Which is a pretty crazy thought considering the first month I was here I couldn’t fathom 2 weeks, much less 8 months! I’ve been here long enough to watch people go through growth spurts - to look back at a picture and say, “Whoa! He looks so small! That was the time I almost got fried on the top of the apartment building. I've been here long enough to see skinny jeans become almost as popular as the khurta. Im so excited to hear abou...
Adventuring in Nepal: September 2010
http://sloopernepal.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 30, 2010. From left to right, Bikram, Dennis, Abrick, Shrijan, me, Dixon. The other night we went over to Lincoln and Drusi's house to watch a movie and build a fire out back. The boys go almost every week, but this was the first time I'd gone with them. When we got there Drusi said, "Oh, you guys made a new friend." (Man was she wrong.) I said politely, "Oh, we're not really new. Friends." Shrijan added, "Yeah, she's more like a sister.". Brownies and Frito-like chips with Shrijan.

“Happiness is a Warm _________” | I've Been a Stranger
https://ivebeenastranger.wordpress.com/2010/12/26/“happiness-is-a-warm-_________”
I've Been a Stranger. Tales from a sojourn in a strange land. December 26, 2010. Happiness is a Warm. There is really only one thing that comes to mind right now about how I’m adjusting to Seoul: it is COLD. Really cold. Colder than I could have imagined. This past week was in the 40s until Friday when it took the plunge to 15 F. That was not even counting the wind chill. Saturday was in the teens and there were flurries today. Things I have done to survive in this frigid place:. So glad to know you̵...
Adventuring in Nepal: July 2010
http://sloopernepal.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 30, 2010. Overflowing toilets, lack of sleep and pooping birds. 8221; Sure enough, there was, and so now this time I was confident I could get the toilet to flush, so I went ahead and used it. It flushed first try. Success! At this point, I really couldn't have cared less about what was wrong with the toilet, so I left my uncle a note, in case he wondered why there were floor mats and extra towels hanging in his shower, and why the toilet didn’t work. From am to am. 8221; Whatever that means...

Earthquake in Nepal – my story | The Roofs of Kathmandu
https://theroofsofkathmandu.wordpress.com/2015/05/02/earthquake-in-nepal-my-story
The Roofs of Kathmandu. Earthquake in Nepal – my story. Huh, how do I even begin this? It would be an understatement to say that the past week was turbulent. It was frightening, surreal and shaky. It was full of insecurity and sadness for all who lost everything. It was also full of relief, gratitude and community connection. It was a truly life-changing week. Share with the world:. Nepali roads, mountains, elephants and mice. Didn’t even realize I was gone) ». May 2, 2015 at 10:58 am. I have followed yo...
Adventuring in Nepal: On to other things
http://sloopernepal.blogspot.com/2011/04/on-to-other-things.html
Wednesday, April 27, 2011. On to other things. Just thought maybe I'd mention that, you know - one last update for this blog. So here's what happened. I got back to my house in Yakima really early on a Thursday morning. The next day I drove down to Walla Walla to see friends. I walked into the place where I used to work, and immediately got offered a job. Later in the day, my cousin's husband called and offered me a place to live. Just like that - without even trying! I like that I lived in Nepal for 8 m...

Nepali roads, mountains, elephants and mice | The Roofs of Kathmandu
https://theroofsofkathmandu.wordpress.com/2015/02/07/nepali-roads-mountains-elephants-and-mice
The Roofs of Kathmandu. Nepali roads, mountains, elephants and mice. When winter hits Kathmandu, the last thing you want to do is stick around in the freezing cold. So this winter Mr.B and I decided to do a road trip around Nepal with friends. We thought it would be fun (and it was). We thought driving through Nepal would be awesome (and it wasn’t). Lakeside is the happening place. Good place for a nature call. Seeing flat land reminded me of home. How can this fertile land house so much poverty? Enj0yed...

Adventuring in Nepal: Dear America.... Love, Nepal
http://sloopernepal.blogspot.com/2011/02/dear-america-love-nepal.html
Monday, February 28, 2011. Dear America. Love, Nepal. Things I’ve learned in Nepal:. If the horn on your vehicle goes out, that is equal to losing your brakes. You must park the vehicle until it is fixed. What is a personal bubble? The head bobble. It means yes, I use it all the time. Grunting, that also means yes. Sticking out your tongue in surprise, yes, I’ve even picked this up. (I’m afraid I no longer have manners.). An acquired taste for some Hindi music. Time is not necessarily of the essence.
Adventuring in Nepal: January 2011
http://sloopernepal.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 30, 2011. Dixon, Shrijan and I, during our victory party. When I was little, my cousin Sasha and I used to have rotten fruit fights. Lemons and oranges, and maybe some mud. Several years back, Jeff and I and some neighbors had rotten apple fights when we got an early frost that killed the harvest. The same neighbors we had lime fights with. After numerous rounds of attacks and retreats, Abrik’s entire platoon was in the lollygrass tree picking fruit, and our squad was directly under...

Letters Home from Nepal. Saturday, September 30, 2017. In Nepal These Days. We hope everyone is fine, despite all the depressing news in the world. We're praying for everyone! Here in Nepal we're in the midst of one of the many festivals they have and it's called Dashain. Many people travel to visit their families, like we do to visit our families during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Here is a common scene these days:. Which I wrote during our first Dashain festival.
