Homesteading ON The Grid. Archive Cooking on the Homestead. RSS for this section. August 11, 2016. In Cooking on the Homestead. Homemade Iced Cream – Whole Foods At Their Best. I found a method of making iced cream on Facebook of all places. You make it with plastic bags, ice and a lot of arm strength. Now I am not one for using plastic much as you may know, but since we have so many in the “junk” storage from previous use, I thought why not reuse some for this project. The iced cream maker was a no go a...

Homesteading ON The Grid. July 16, 2015. This year we decided to fill in our small strawberry patch because the winter was rough on them and most didn’t survive. We didn’t do anything special to fill this in other than let the existing grass work its way into the area. Also working their way into the bare soil were weeds – or what most gardeners would consider weeds. To see the vlog about it go to: http:/ youtu.be/vO7KPUjednA. View all posts by Homesteading101 ». Homesteading ON The Grid. Archive Growing Your Own Food. RSS for this section. August 22, 2016. In Growing Your Own Food. This year Ernie did the garden planting. I was working (at home) and didn’t have the extra time so he put in all the plants. He even picked up the seeds at the store and some transplants from the local greenhouse. Needless to say I forgot what he bought and planted. Our Drying Method Is Simple. I simply keep the leaves on the trays and “fluff” them daily. The moral of this story is &#...
They Grew Because We Ignored Them | Homesteading 101

Homesteading ON The Grid. May 16, 2015. In Growing Your Own Food. They Grew Because We Ignored Them. This year we grew some of our own vegetables from seed for transplanting into the garden. These were tomatoes, cabbage, brussels, broccoli, oregano, basil. Everything grew and grew. This is unusual for us. More often, the plants are spindly and small and they take more work than is preferred to get them to live. This time we ignored them, so I guess that is why they grew so nicely. Working From Home – Reusing Items For Equipment Part 2 | Homesteading 101

Homesteading ON The Grid. February 23, 2015. In Living Simply With Dogs. Working From Home – Reusing Items For Equipment Part 2. Recently, my homemade dryer arm was completed with the help of several reused/recycled metal and plastic parts – and a new grooming arm that was purchased 2 years ago that I have never really used. Ernie pieced together the contraption so that I could brush out a dog’s coat while having the air blow on it without having to hold it myself. Doing things for cheap. We're Anne and ...

MAKE YOUR OWN STUFF. March 22, 2018. In Don't Throw It Out. Make Your Own Stuff. Homestead Skin and Hair Care. Personal style is not normally influenced by fashion but it can be. By today’s standards, you should be able to wear pretty much whatever you want, no matter what the trend is at the time. That’s what I do now when it comes to clothes. Hair and skin care for this homesteader has also had a transformation to the frugal and basic kind. The brush does need to be washed regularly as you can see in t...

The Wilds of Walcott Road: our homesteading adventure - Blog
Today marks the first year anniversary of our move to Walcott Road. Those first few weeks weren't easy. The roads were clear and the winter skies were blue. Our life was packed up in a small u-haul trailer. After many teary goodbye's and me questioning, "Are we doing the right thing? Um We didn't know. Ack! We were desperate. What kind of internet service do our neighbors have? We aren't THAT rural! We DO have neighbors! After twelve days of panic, with the assistance of a kind young man, our internet an...

Homesteading and Philosophy
Sunday, July 1, 2012. I would like you first to read this article. Go ahead and enjoy, then come back and do your best to slog through my own ramblings. I was fortunate enough to have the pleasure of meeting Mr Cooper, featured prominently in the above linked article, at the Midwest Ox Drovers Association Gathering. I would now count myself as a bonafide scythe enthusiast, albeit certainly a novice in skill level. To this end, I feel compelled to spread the scythe gospel to all who will listen. As noted ...
