Howard Pyle: Pyle on Saint-Gaudens’s Sherman Monument

https://howardpyle.blogspot.com/2013/06/pyle-on-saint-gaudenss-sherman-monument.html

Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Pyle on Saint-Gaudens’s Sherman Monument. On May 30, 1903, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. 8217;s Sherman Monument. I have just returned from New York and I feel that I want to tell you how beautiful I think your Sherman Memorial Statue to be. It impresses me, as your work always does, as being not only beautiful but great, and I am sure that it is not prejudice upon my part but a matter of calm judgment that leads me to feel that you are easily the leading sculptor in the world today -.

Howard Pyle: Pyle on Barye and Wyeth

https://howardpyle.blogspot.com/2014/08/pyle-on-barye-and-wyeth.html

Friday, August 29, 2014. Pyle on Barye and Wyeth. In a post two years ago, I quoted Howard Pyle’s thoughts on the sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye. But I want to expand on that post. To show why he brought Barye up in the first place. On August 29, 1904, 21-year-old N. C. Wyeth brought in the charcoal drawing seen here for Pyle’s weekly composition lecture. According to Ethel Pennewill Brown and Olive Rush - who took notes during these lectures - Pyle said something like this that day:. As you have him but w...

Howard Pyle: Another Picture for Arthur Conan Doyle

https://howardpyle.blogspot.com/2015/02/another-picture-for-arthur-conan-doyle.html

Sunday, February 22, 2015. Another Picture for Arthur Conan Doyle. This Howard Pyle picture went untitled when it appeared in Harper’s Weekly. For December 1, 1894, illustrating Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Parasite. However, in the book version (published in mid-December 1894, after the four-part serialization) it was called “‘Struck me with both fists’” - and indeed it shows the spellbound hero of the novella, Austin Gillroy, beating the stuffing out of his friend Charles Sadler. Has been located. I st...

Howard Pyle: “A mug, a pipe and a pleasant Friend or two”

https://howardpyle.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-mug-pipe-and-pleasant-friend-or-two.html

Tuesday, December 30, 2014. 8220;A mug, a pipe and a pleasant Friend or two”. In his 1918 history. Of New York City’s venerable Salmagundi Club. Club librarian William Henry Shelton recalled a proposal he had made at the turn of the last century “which was the beginning of one of the most interesting customs of the club and one which has furnished the library with an ample income from that day to this.”. 8217;s art department - but I have yet to find corroborating evidence. Had sent in a bid of two hundr...

Howard Pyle: Return in Ten Days to Howard Pyle...

https://howardpyle.blogspot.com/2015/06/return-in-ten-days-to-howard-pyle.html

Saturday, June 20, 2015. Return in Ten Days to Howard Pyle. That’s good advice, and I really ought to take it - at least when it comes to this blog. Somehow I’ve been neglectful for four months. The fact is, I return to Howard Pyle every. Day, rain or shine, and in the past few months I’ve been so deep in my research that I haven’t had the chance or been in the mindset to write anything up. But I’ll come around again, soon. If anything, there’s too. Much to talk about - and I have trouble choosing.

February | 2013 | MURMURS

https://georgepratt.wordpress.com/2013/02

Wanderings of an artist in the trenches. Archive for February, 2013. Sunday, February 14, 2010. While hauling all of my painting crap to the studio today I was reflecting on how artists are willing to continue doing what they’re doing regardless of incredible odds and so much negativity in a world that really doesn’t understand, or want to understand, the urges one has to create. I mean, really, what’s in it for us as artists, right? What makes that happen? Weird, isn’t it? There’s a little of both...

Ian Schoenherr: The Twistrose Key’s Winter Jacket

http://ianschoenherr.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-twistrose-keys-winter-jacket.html

Wednesday, January 8, 2014. The Twistrose Key’s Winter Jacket. Looking through an old notebook, I see that I made my first sketches for the jacket of Tone Almhjell’s The Twistrose Key. On February 4, 2012 - a good 20 months before the novel was published. At first, the jacket was to be winter-themed, with a snowy landscape surrounded by a border printed in blue, silver, and black, and evocative of late 19th Century publishers’ bindings. Next, I placed snowflakes within the (erroneous) bows of the keys - ...

Ian Schoenherr: Revisiting Illustrations

http://ianschoenherr.blogspot.com/2013/12/revisiting-illustrations.html

Wednesday, December 18, 2013. I used to think that it was a sin to rework an illustration after it had been published. But there’s plenty of historical precedence for post-publication alterations: Howard Pyle. For example, did a lot of picture-tweaking for a variety of reasons (some of which I discussed here. So, I wondered, if a book is out of print with no real chance of being revived, why not. Revisit its illustrations in hopes of breathing new life into them? I decided to do a little experiment.
