#hsgovchat: A Supreme Week in D.C.
http://www.hsgovchat.blogspot.com/2014/08/a-supreme-week-in-d.html
By gov teachers, for gov teachers. Tuesday, August 5, 2014. A Supreme Week in D.C. As the summer winds down and I begin having the obligatory “How was your summer? 8221; conversations with my colleagues, I find myself reliving the all of the highlights of summer. I had a great break – Cabo San Lucas and camping with the family, a weekend getaway with my husband, my (gulp) 20. Street Law’s Supreme Court Summer Institute. Two attorneys spoke about their experience working as counsel for interest groups tha...

By gov teachers, for gov teachers. Friday, July 11, 2014. Reflections on the AP Government Reading. As usual, the reading was the best professional development I engaged in all year and I came away with many insights on both the exam and getting my students ready for success at the next level. Let me share of few of these with you. When in Doubt Provide 2X the Number of Required Examples. Explain Means “Complete the Circle”. Hsgovchat at the Reading. By gov teachers, for gov teachers. Friday, August 22, 2014. Using the Edcamp Model in AP Government. It is a conference where there is no schedule until the day of the Conference. Teachers sign up for what they want to talk about that day and then spend time collaborating with other instructors about those topics. I decided to do this as a review for my AP Gov kids and was really suprised at how well it went. Note: I have recently started using Go SoapBox. Which I like even more). Would I do it again?

Thinking about History Teaching: July 2014
http://teachhistorywell.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Thinking about History Teaching. Thursday, July 24, 2014. Argument is at the core of history. What is an argument? In simple terms an argument boils down to this: accept X because of Y. What do historians argue about? For example, what topics are important? Why are they important? What were the causes and consequences of these events? How should these events be described? Are there perspectives being left out, overemphasized? Remember, the past is not history. Based on what criteria? Links to this post.

Thinking about History Teaching. Monday, June 30, 2014. The Use and Abuse of the Term Bias. I set a goal for myself this month to match my published word count from last July, about 9000 words. Rather than write a few lengthy posts, I am going to try to publish short posts each day. If necessary, I will linger on certain topics and themes for a few days, so that I can dig deeper. Today I reread Sean Lang’s essay. 8216;What is bias? Lang does not think so, though many who use the two terms appear to.

Thinking about History Teaching. Monday, December 30, 2013. Controversial Issues in Government Class: Abortion. In 10 years teaching government, I have learned that facilitating a discussion requires a considerable amount of planning. Just because students are sharing opinions does not mean they are discussing. For a topic such as abortion, a teacher should avoid having students just share their opinions. Are there less controversial topics that have similar connections? I have used Edmodo, an excellent ...
Thinking about History Teaching: What is history? History is NOT the past.
http://teachhistorywell.blogspot.com/2014/07/what-is-history.html
Thinking about History Teaching. Thursday, July 24, 2014. History is NOT the past. I am working on some summary statements that I can use for planning purposes. These statements will represent core understandings that will underpin the lessons in my class. Moving forward, using ideas of backward design, I will craft learning experiences that help students to explore these ideas. History is NOT a single story. Since accounts of the past are not identical, judgments have to be made about these accounts....

Thinking about History Teaching: How might Eric Mazur's Ideas Apply to a History Class?

Thinking about History Teaching. Thursday, July 25, 2013. How might Eric Mazur's Ideas Apply to a History Class? Yesterday, I viewed this video of Eric Mazur discussing his experiences as a young physics professor at Harvard in the early 90s. Mazur titled this talk Confessions of a Converted Lecturer. In it, he addresses the following questions: As an instructional strategy, what is the value of lecture? How are we to know? And what are alternatives to lecture? There is an opportunity cost associated wit...
Thinking about History Teaching: April 2014
http://teachhistorywell.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Thinking about History Teaching. Wednesday, April 30, 2014. In Western Civ today, after watching a History Channel documentary called WWI Technology, students examined three sources in their WWI Source Set. The three sources that they examined today were a table illustrating various European countries’ spending on armaments during the late 1800s and two diplomatic correspondences: 1 between Austria and Germany and the other between France and Russia. 4 Once they evaluated each other’s inferences, I...
Thinking about History Teaching: An overview of my Western Civ Course

Thinking about History Teaching. Sunday, August 3, 2014. An overview of my Western Civ Course. Hello and welcome to Western Civilization. The purpose of this segment is to consider the following questions: What are some of the differences b/t social studies and history? And how will these differences impact how we approach this course? And if you asked another 50 people what do you study in history class, the vast majority would give the same answer, the past. What, then, is social studies? Many of you w...
Thinking about History Teaching: Memory and Our First Text, a poem
http://teachhistorywell.blogspot.com/2014/08/memory-and-our-first-text-poem.html
Thinking about History Teaching. Monday, August 4, 2014. Memory and Our First Text, a poem. Where do we begin? I think where and, more importantly, how we begin this course is key. In many ways, you should pay attention less to what I say and more to what I do. To what extent are my words and actions aligned? I have chosen to begin this course with a poem. I stumbled on this poem over the summer when I was actively searching for poems that explored the idea of memory. Did she hand write it? How many draf...

By gov teachers, for gov teachers. Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Mock Supreme Court Oral Arguments. Over the past few years, I have developed an activity that I would describe as mock Supreme Court oral arguments. I finish every week with this 40 minute lesson that uses case summaries by www.oyez.org. It is the perfect way to close out the week in AP Government on a fun and challenging note. When I have described it at #hsgovchat. So here is the final product:. Be your first case for a few reasons:. By liste...
