Lucy Abroad: October 2011
http://lucy-abroad.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Adventures of an Aussie teaching English in Japan. Wednesday, October 19, 2011. How to have a great day's teaching - method #3697. Start the day by eating a grasshopper. By this time, the bell for the start of lessons had been and gone, and I was still standing in the staffroom staring at my grasshopper, and had four flights of stairs between where I was and where I was supposed to be. I gathered up all my courage, and bit off a leg. It actually was. Posted by Lucy Mayne. Monday, October 10, 2011. The fi...

Lucy Abroad: No more monkeys
http://lucy-abroad.blogspot.com/2012/03/no-more-monkeys.html
Adventures of an Aussie teaching English in Japan. Friday, March 30, 2012. On Tuesday, Hunty and I went to Arashiyama. I needed to say my farewells to the monkeys, and there were a few other things that we wanted to do there. The first order of the day was to hike up the monkey mountain to see the monkeys. Every time we have gone to Arashiyama, that has been the first thing we have done, so we kept to our traditon. Not a monkey, but he seemed to fit in among them. Lord of his domain. Towards the end of t...

Adventures of an Aussie teaching English in Japan. Friday, April 6, 2012. Top 10 food experiences. In no particular order. Okonomiyaki is a kind of savoury cabbage based pancake from the Osaka area. Some people call it a Japanese pizza, because you can top it with whatever takes your fancy, but the connection to pizza ends there. It tends to be on the expensive side, but with all-you-can eat, and is both healthy (as long as you remember to include vegetables), and very tasty. Ramen is basically a fancy v...

Lucy Abroad: November 2011
http://lucy-abroad.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Adventures of an Aussie teaching English in Japan. Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Going to the doctor with a cold. Anyway, today I gave in to all the people who have been hassling me and decided to go to the doctor, despite my belief that there's no point going to the doctor with just a cold. In Japan, it seems that a cold is a perfectly valid reason to go to the doctor, in fact, you get a lot of puzzled looks if you don't. Antibiotics (I have a cold! Posted by Lucy Mayne. Lucy Abroad: The rubbish cycle
http://lucy-abroad.blogspot.com/2012/04/rubbish-cycle.html
Adventures of an Aussie teaching English in Japan. Monday, April 2, 2012. The rubbish cycle in Japan is incredibly involved. Click the below image to enlarge and see the level of detail we had to work with. Also, there's no such thing as a wheelie bin, or anything similar. You simply keep your rubbish inside until it is time to dispose of it, and then put it out in the street where it is picked up by hand and thrown into the back of the rubbish truck. Lucy Abroad: February 2012
http://lucy-abroad.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Adventures of an Aussie teaching English in Japan. Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Yesterday was the first of my last days at a school. Yesterday was my last day at Makami. I've just read over my first impressions. I felt really sad saying goodbye to the kids after our final lessons. In one class, a girl stuck paper tears onto her face to show me how sad she was too. We played games and had fun since it was the last lesson. Next week I've got to do this another four times. It's going to be hard. Monday, Fe...

Adventures of an Aussie teaching English in Japan. Saturday, March 31, 2012. We're all packed up and ready leave for the airport in about 2 hours. Japan has farewelled us with miserable weather and pouring rain, but tempered that with the first cherry blossoms of the season coming out today on our local cherry trees. We'll fly out late tonight, and arrive at the Gold Coast early tomorrow morning. I hope to see many of you soon! Posted by Lucy Mayne. Friday, March 30, 2012. We just have a few minor tasks ...

Lucy Abroad: June 2011
http://lucy-abroad.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Adventures of an Aussie teaching English in Japan. Sunday, June 26, 2011. Posted by Lucy Mayne. Wednesday, June 22, 2011. Fortunately, the past couple of days, the schools seem to have cottoned on to the fact that it's getting hot, and some of the classrooms are now air conditioned. Others aren't, and to top it off, some teachers keep the windows closed. Argh! This morning at 9:00am, it was already unpleasantly hot and humid. It is now almost 10pm, and still unpleasantly hot and humid. Today my Yr 5s and...
