i550-212: Keel progress

Building an i550 sportboat in Greece! The i550 is a 5.5 m sailboat specifically designed for the amateur builder. Tuesday, 11 August 2009. I made a start on the keel last weekend. I used Iroko to make the core. I decided to follow the method on the Gougeon articles, the reason being that it provided instructions to the level of precision required by a novice boat builder like me. I first ripped the planks as seen on this pic:. Tuesday, August 11, 2009. 13 September 2009 at 19:56. Do keep in touch! Καλησπ...

Building an i550 sportboat in Greece! The i550 is a 5.5 m sailboat specifically designed for the amateur builder. Monday, 30 November 2009. The summer, the wind, obligations and some technical issues have all conspired against any progress in this build. But, I started cutting yesterday! And I am happy with the result! Monday, November 30, 2009. 5 December 2009 at 23:28. 26 January 2010 at 23:47. Remember, measure twice, cut once! 5 July 2010 at 22:21.

Building an i550 sportboat in Greece! The i550 is a 5.5 m sailboat specifically designed for the amateur builder. Monday, 3 August 2009. I am putting down some prices for the different ways of buying the plywood for the benefit of those not based in the US (prices in Euro):. BUY LOCAL / CUT CNC. BUY LOCAL / CUT MANUALLY. Buying the kit from Watershed would really be the best option were it not for the uncertainty of the customs and duties costs . Monday, August 03, 2009. Labels: customs and duties.
i550-212: NACA0012 sections
http://i550-212.blogspot.com/2009/08/naca0012-sections.html
Building an i550 sportboat in Greece! The i550 is a 5.5 m sailboat specifically designed for the amateur builder. Thursday, 6 August 2009. I have prepared the NACA0012 sections for keel and rudder. In the keel drawing, there are 3 sections for which the y-axis position is indicated. Similarly, 4 sections for the rudder. Here are the links to actual size sections:. I will use these to shape the cores. Hence, I have made a tiny reduction in size to accomodate for a 4 mm skin thickness. This is the i550!

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Monday, December 12, 2011. Brandon from Tasmania chatted me up last week about how I rigged my spinnaker pole. Since I typed everything up to him, I thought I would post it here for anyone else that is curious. Here are some pics to clarify the prod rigging (I hope) on pipedream using the c-tech spin pole with inner and outer sleeves. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). What is the i550. PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Thursday, December 9, 2010. Rudder #2 - Step 1, the plan and the cores. Finished foil will be 57" long with 42" below the water line which is about what the plan calls for and what my first rudder was. This rudder is designed with a symmetrical taper a little less aggressive than what Chad used for his rudder. Chad's first blog entry on his rudder can be found here. Project or plane: Rudder #2. Core: 2 piece, 2.3# Spyder foam. Panel Length: 21.0 / 40.0. Setba...

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Wednesday, May 5, 2010. The good, the bad and the ugly. So Tuesday was a great looking day and we decided it was time for a shake down cruise. I have to give full props to my 1st mate who put up with the tedious process of figuring things out for the first time over and over again. With a few repetitions I think we'll trim considerable time from our arrival to launch time. It was a day of way to many firsts. But you have to start some where right. Subscribe t...

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Monday, September 27, 2010. 2010 i550 US National Championships. With 5 points over 4 races. Jeff was just 2 points off the pace. I had good starts and good upwind speed by couldn't hold on for better than 3rd. Here is a shot of PipeDream with the spin up and looking pretty good. Concensus is that the luff is a touch short. We had the spin halyard eased about 18" and that gave us a better shape. Another thing to work on and figure out. What is the i550. 087 b...

pipeDream - i550 in Chicago: Let's all come together
http://pipedream.esquak.com/2012/02/lets-all-come-together.html
PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Let's all come together. I had quite a weekend and I'll break the progress into a few posts. First step was to glue the foam core together around the bi-axial spline. The trick I used here that worked really well was to use straight pins to hold the parts in place. The steps I used went something like this. To mount the foam core in the stand I used 4 long (3" length) screens and some gorilla glue. I'd recommend the glue for su...

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Thursday, June 10, 2010. Now the fun part, Sailing! A My jib was too long. This made de-powering the jib pretty impossible. B My jib tracks are a little to far aft at this point. I think this will vary with sails too. C My tiller still needs some figuring out. It sits too low and the extensions kept getting messed up. Part of that is just being tidy which we didn't take the time to do. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). What is the i550. Keel rou...

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Friday, March 23, 2012. Some skin in the game. The rudder is starting to come together. And the lamination took a serious family effort. All four of us were mixing epoxy, wetting out the carbon on the work bench and laying it out on the rudder. The process basically goes in 5ish steps. They are something like this. Flying foam cut core cut from spyder foam. at 2.3 pounds per cubic foot. 1 twill - full length. 3 uni 27" x 6" strip at max width. Step #2 - get e...

I550-381
Tuesday, August 13, 2013. A couple of photos of the boat. You can see that the rig is too loose, but I intend to install an adjustable headstay for next season. The first photo is taken from a distance in about 10 Kts of wind. The second photo is in light air, right next to shore. Thursday, July 25, 2013. Great vacation with the i550. Dienstag, 13. September 2011. Once I started cutting the frames and found them to bend under the strain of the hull, I decided to have my frames with at least 12mm [1/2"] thickness (in some places with 24mm [1"] and/or fiber glass reinforcement). Yes, this is overkill. But now they are very sturdy and I feel confident with the construction. Diesen Post per E-Mail versenden. Diesen Post per E-Mail versenden. Freitag, 1. Juli 2011. Dawg House - i550 Sportboat. Saturday, January 1, 2011. The Fun Has Started! At the chairman’s lighting in early December, I told Santa that I wanted to build a i550 and needed a pile of ¼” plywood and some epoxy for Christmas. I did not want to be disappointed, so I did not get my hopes up. After all, I have asked him many times before. Two weeks later old Kris Kringle. Hull #203 The Clockwork Mouse. Sunday, 5 August 2012. I drilled holes in my newly glassed cabin top (ouch! For the supply of Kevin's gusset layout drawing as it provided a technical draft of what I was trying to achieve with an accurate set of measurements that I could check my results against. At this stage I think I am close to within a few millimetres so I can breath again. Lesson learned: We do things in order for a reason! T section and stringlines to provide accurate gusset positions.
