Slightly Barbaric

Sunday, July 17, 2011. Slightly Barbaric's first sail! My dot needs to change colors! Just under a year after construction began, Slightly Barbaric goes for its first sail! There is still some work that needs to be done (recutting the main and possibly the jib, figuring out better leads, adjusting the tiller, and attaching the keel to the boat more firmly) but it feels great to get out on the water! Sunday, March 20, 2011. Thursday, January 6, 2011. The keel box has somewhat been waiting on the keel to p...

Slightly Barbaric: Getting Closer

http://i550slightlybarbaric.blogspot.com/2011/01/getting-closer.html

Thursday, January 6, 2011. Well I figured I would try to list the projects that I have left before the boat is sailable. The keel box has somewhat been waiting on the keel to progress as well. Instead of a sleeve, I am creating a box and will have fittings on the keel that will slide into the box when the keel is down. This was suggested to me, instead of the sleeve, b/c of the ability to adjust the cant or twist after installation. As well as the ease of construction and manufacturing. I550 - Dawg House.

Slightly Barbaric: It's been a quick couple of days

http://i550slightlybarbaric.blogspot.com/2010/07/its-been-quick-couple-of-days.html

Saturday, July 24, 2010. It's been a quick couple of days. Time seems to be flying by quicker than I would like right now. I got into town late Sunday night so I got somewhat of a late start on Monday. I began by cleaning up the garage and my work spaces. It was like Christmas opening up all the packages that I had ordered. I waited around all day for the wood to show up and no luck. I guess I would have to wait till Tuesday to begin all the fun stuff. Friday I worked on removing all the pvc piping and r...

Slightly Barbaric: Taking a Break

http://i550slightlybarbaric.blogspot.com/2011/03/taking-break.html

Sunday, March 20, 2011. Well the Navy has sent me to New London, CT for a couple months and I decided to leave the boat and her parts down in Charleston. Before I left, I finished glassing, priming and painting the exterior. I still have a little reinforcement glassing as well as installation of the hardware and fittings to go on the hull. My next task when I return to Charleston will be to pour the bulb and finish the mast and rigging. March 21, 2011 at 9:08 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Slightly Barbaric: Its Been a While

http://i550slightlybarbaric.blogspot.com/2011/01/its-been-while.html

Sunday, January 2, 2011. Its Been a While. Progress certainly did slow down but I have been chipping away small projects slowly over the past couple of months (even though I have been off the radar). My actual goal was to have the fewest blog posting to make the project appear to be quick and simple. Its hard for me to work on it where I live so I usually take it to various friend's driveways on the weekend. January 4, 2011 at 4:49 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Its Been a While.

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Monday, December 12, 2011. Brandon from Tasmania chatted me up last week about how I rigged my spinnaker pole. Since I typed everything up to him, I thought I would post it here for anyone else that is curious. Here are some pics to clarify the prod rigging (I hope) on pipedream using the c-tech spin pole with inner and outer sleeves. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). What is the i550. PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Thursday, December 9, 2010. Rudder #2 - Step 1, the plan and the cores. Finished foil will be 57" long with 42" below the water line which is about what the plan calls for and what my first rudder was. This rudder is designed with a symmetrical taper a little less aggressive than what Chad used for his rudder. Chad's first blog entry on his rudder can be found here. Project or plane: Rudder #2. PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Wednesday, May 5, 2010. The good, the bad and the ugly. So Tuesday was a great looking day and we decided it was time for a shake down cruise. I have to give full props to my 1st mate who put up with the tedious process of figuring things out for the first time over and over again. With a few repetitions I think we'll trim considerable time from our arrival to launch time. It was a day of way to many firsts. But you have to start some where right. Subscribe t...

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Monday, September 27, 2010. 2010 i550 US National Championships. With 5 points over 4 races. Jeff was just 2 points off the pace. I had good starts and good upwind speed by couldn't hold on for better than 3rd. Here is a shot of PipeDream with the spin up and looking pretty good. Concensus is that the luff is a touch short. We had the spin halyard eased about 18" and that gave us a better shape. Another thing to work on and figure out. What is the i550. 087 b...

pipeDream - i550 in Chicago: Let's all come together

http://pipedream.esquak.com/2012/02/lets-all-come-together.html

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Let's all come together. I had quite a weekend and I'll break the progress into a few posts. First step was to glue the foam core together around the bi-axial spline. The trick I used here that worked really well was to use straight pins to hold the parts in place. The steps I used went something like this. To mount the foam core in the stand I used 4 long (3" length) screens and some gorilla glue. I'd recommend the glue for su...

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Thursday, June 10, 2010. Now the fun part, Sailing! A My jib was too long. This made de-powering the jib pretty impossible. B My jib tracks are a little to far aft at this point. I think this will vary with sails too. C My tiller still needs some figuring out. It sits too low and the extensions kept getting messed up. Part of that is just being tidy which we didn't take the time to do. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). What is the i550. Keel rou...

PipeDream - i550 in Chicago. In a larger map. Friday, March 23, 2012. Some skin in the game. The rudder is starting to come together. And the lamination took a serious family effort. All four of us were mixing epoxy, wetting out the carbon on the work bench and laying it out on the rudder. The process basically goes in 5ish steps. They are something like this. Flying foam cut core cut from spyder foam. at 2.3 pounds per cubic foot. 1 twill - full length. 3 uni 27" x 6" strip at max width. Step #2 - get e...

A Few Sailing Shots. My wife took a few shots from the shore so I can see how the boat was performing. These boats definately like to dig in a sit on that chine. Sailing at Richmond CA, in 5-7 knots with gusts to 10. Last photo you can see the rotating mast aligning well with the wind flow. So we took my Honey out sailing for the first time on a beautiful and windy day. Overall she performed beautifully. Pointed well, reached fast, light on the helm, and very nimble.
