Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good. Science Fiction. Progressive Christianity. And Other Improbable Optimisms. Sunday, March 16, 2014. The readings are Genesis 12:1-4a. How can these things be? 8221; Nicodemus’ bewilderment about the spiritual birth of baptism reminds us of the literal, astonishing births granted to Abraham and Sarah, who were given children in their old age. Does it really need to be harder during Lent? Can’t we just skip to the good part, to Easter? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Tales of...

Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good. Science Fiction. Progressive Christianity. And Other Improbable Optimisms. Sunday, December 21, 2014. Here's today's Blue Christmas homily. The readings are. Tonight, the Winter Solstice, is the longest night of the year. Tomorrow, the days will start getting longer again. But many of us have come to church this evening because we’re struggling with our own darkness, with sorrow and loss. This story reminds us of the value of darkness. Children grow first in darkne...

Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good. Science Fiction. Progressive Christianity. And Other Improbable Optimisms. Sunday, September 28, 2014. Here's today's homily. The readings are. Many of you know that my husband and I have three cats. Every morning when I wake up, they’re waiting outside our bedroom door, and when I come out, they begin wailing piteously. I can just imagine what they’re saying. “Where were. Why did you go away? You’ve never fed us! No one has ever. No one has ever. Out here, Moses!
Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good: April 2015
http://improbableoptimisms.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good. Science Fiction. Progressive Christianity. And Other Improbable Optimisms. Saturday, April 04, 2015. Here's my homily for the Great Vigil of Easter. The Gospel is Mark 16:1-8. Everyone has failed Jesus. The three women failed him, too. They failed him when he was still alive; they won’t fail him now. They’ll follow the funerary customs, as they do when anyone they love dies. They’ll give Jesus’ body every bit of respect they can,...Oh, he’s not here. He left;...Angels ...

He who made kittens put snakes in the grass. The philosopher Jethro Tull. Monday, June 20, 2011. Report on the Mission Trip - Eeyore goes to Honduras. Everyday in Honduras I read this. Everyday I was touched. I still don't know the full significance of why God had me in this daily, but I suspect it will continue to grow in it. She told the Lord, see, I have your offering, but you have blessed me before I could even give it! Her joy in what she had makes me re-evaluate my life and what I have. Rickety Con...

Sunday, June 03, 2007. Ok so the big question is . "Now that you've graduated and passed the NCLEX - what are you going to do? Well I have been deliberately NOT blogging because I had news, but couldn't share it until now. I have accepted my dream job. According to one of my 3-year-olds, I "feel down and went boom! It is a story I am reluctant to tell as it was stupid :) I tripped at the gas station on the gas pump line - whoops! I landed on my elbow so as not to hit my head on the concrete. OUCH! My elbow and hip are black and blue and hurt like hell! The good doctor c...

Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good
Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good. Science Fiction. Progressive Christianity. And Other Improbable Optimisms. Sunday, August 13, 2017. Necessary, but not Sufficient. Here's today's homily. The readings are Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28. We know they have happy endings. The people inside them, though, can't know that everything will be all right. They're probably about to become ghosts, too. Then the ghost speaks. "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.". Luckily, it really is Jesus. He reaches out and catch...

So I didn't need much. Mushrooms were calling my name. As were scallions, not just as a flavoring, but as a full throttled vegetable. Brown rice as a bed to lay it on. Done. This is so easy it doesn't warrant a recipe. But go find one of those eels and see what else you can do with it. Once I eat down the content...I've ...

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Saturday, May 7, 2016. You mean we can eat that? Last year, on a whim, we bought "Backyard Foraging- 65 Familiar Plants You Didn't Know You Could Eat," by Ellen Zachos. We discovered that much of what Susan grows as ornamental, is edible. For example, those pretty yellow flowers that a friend gave us a few years ago are really sunchokes, which we can harvest every fall after the first frost or two. And that infuriating bishop's weed is edible! I knew that I shoul...
