Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings
Improbable Pantry: November 2010
http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Kabocha Squash Spread with Homemade Crackers. I recently discovered the wonders of kabocha squash. So the next time I was at the market I picked one up. (Since it was at the HMART, I guess I can cross post to Asian Fling). Last time the texture when roasted was like a sweet potato, so I had the idea to mash it into something spreadable. After which I had the idea to make something to spread it on, like homemade crackers. To be easy and...

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Tuesday, December 6, 2011. Roasted Kabocha Squash Slices with Puzzling Seasoning that Will Blow You Away. The nice thing about kabocha squash is that half a squash is usually enough for a family dinner, so there's another half sitting in the fridge for more just a few days later. Of course, Susan always complains that I don't make enough of them. After much experimentation, I now have the formula down to perfection:. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Put in the oven a...
Improbable Pantry: July 2014

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Thursday, July 31, 2014. The heirlooms are here! In Belmont (labna if you can't get yogurt this thick- I'm pretty sure it's the same foodstuff), some fresh oregano, and thick slices of heirloom tomato. These are purple Cherokee, an all time favorite. The Brandywine's are close behind. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Yes please, I'll have me some of that: A simple one pot pasta with tomatoes and basil. Here's a shout out to Food52. Prep time.5 or 10 minutes, tops. There...

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Friday, October 30, 2009. By the time Michael Pollan declared, "Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants," in his In Defense of Food. It didn't take much to convince me. I had always eaten what my grandmother would recognize as food. Mostly. I did have a thing for Oreos, but still. And then Mark Bittman followed with practical eating advice along the same philosophical lines in his book/cookbook Food Matters. I've always been concerned that a mostly vegetable diet w...
Improbable Pantry: You mean we can eat that?
http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2016/05/you-mean-we-can-eat-that.html
Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Saturday, May 7, 2016. You mean we can eat that? Last year, on a whim, we bought "Backyard Foraging- 65 Familiar Plants You Didn't Know You Could Eat," by Ellen Zachos. We discovered that much of what Susan grows as ornamental, is edible. For example, those pretty yellow flowers that a friend gave us a few years ago are really sunchokes, which we can harvest every fall after the first frost or two. And that infuriating bishop's weed is edible!

Playing with food while making great meals can be fun! Saturday, October 31, 2009. Now posting on: Improbable Pantry. I started this blog in October 2008, and have had a year to play with sharing my food experiences with you. I've been wanting to make some changes, not the least of which was the name. So, I've rebranded as Improbable Pantry. And hope you follow me over there. Posted by Jeff B. Links to this post. Sunday, October 18, 2009. Cold snowy Sunday in October. Intermission: February 2010

Mid life opportunity beckons. Thursday, February 25, 2010. Can you be a tourist in your hometown? We wandered from Saratoga to Oneonta (NY) to visit Josh and Ruth (and brush up on our Trivial Pursuit skills). Did you know that Ali McGraw almost got the female lead in Chinatown but didn't because she was married to the director and ran away with Steve McQueen? Further up Greene Street, we hit store after store of high end furniture and home furnishings. Of things I can't imagine anyone would want in t...

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling: Kimchi crisis in Korea
http://improbablepantry-asian.blogspot.com/2010/11/kimchi-crisis-in-korea.html
Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Sunday, November 14, 2010. Kimchi crisis in Korea. That are available. As a result, kimchi is in short supply. It's usually served free of charge as a side dish at every meal in Korea, but that's changing. Me - I'd be happy switching to green onion or radish. But it seems that in Korea, the napa cabbage variety is king. And this: "Though the mouth-scorching dish can be readily bought in stores, many people ma...

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Saturday, December 4, 2010. Kimchi Pancake - Another Revelation. So here’s the deal. It’s a savory pancake. And I’m not sure I’ve ever had a savory pancake. Just like I’d never had savory oatmeal for breakfast. I’d never even thought of a savory pancake. By now, kimchi stew has become part of my normal repertoire. Susan loves it. Works with whatever I have in the house. Seems to be a theme here. Cook on mediu...

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling: Experimenting again -- Grilled eel with portobellos and scallions

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Experimenting again - Grilled eel with portobellos and scallions. So I didn't need much. Mushrooms were calling my name. As were scallions, not just as a flavoring, but as a full throttled vegetable. Brown rice as a bed to lay it on. Done. This is so easy it doesn't warrant a recipe. But go find one of those eels and see what else you can do with it. Once I eat down the content...I've ...

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling: Kabocha squash revisited
http://improbablepantry-asian.blogspot.com/2011/03/kabocha-squash-revisited.html
Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Saturday, March 26, 2011. After my first exploration with kabocha squash. I've repeated the same formula over and over: cut into slices, roast with olive oil. Eat. A little variation entered the lexicon when I turned it into an appetizer spread. It sounded like just the thing- similar to what I'd done before, yet different enough to warrant some excitement. Since I don't have perfect slicing skills, some part...

Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good
Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good. Science Fiction. Progressive Christianity. And Other Improbable Optimisms. Sunday, August 13, 2017. Necessary, but not Sufficient. Here's today's homily. The readings are Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28. We know they have happy endings. The people inside them, though, can't know that everything will be all right. They're probably about to become ghosts, too. Then the ghost speaks. "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.". Luckily, it really is Jesus. He reaches out and catch...
