Two years ago we started on our goal to make programming better with Light Table. Now we’re working on bringing programming to everyone with Eve. As it exists today, programming is unnecessarily complex. It takes years of dedicated training to tell a computer what to do, but being able to do so is nothing short of a modern day superpower. We want to put that power in the hands of everyone. Not by dumbing programming down, but by finding the right foundation. Upon which it should sit. We’d love to talk.

Version control, collaborative editing and undo. Jamie Brandon - 22 Apr 2015. Collaborative editing, undo/redo and version control are all instances of the same problem. They are also all legendarily hard to get right. With that in mind, I would like to have more eyes on the design I’m proposing for Eve. The standard solution to any hard problem is to find someone who solved it already and steal their answer. Let’s look at existing distributed version-control systems and collaborative editors. With this ...

Software development, Python, Django, Ubuntu and everything. Reactjs based plugin for LightTable. LightTable made quite a big fuzz some time ago. Now original authors are working fulltime on Eve. While LightTable is now more driven by community members. And they're doing some pretty interesting work like switching to Atom Shell. I like the idea that text editor is a browser. It gives you ability to do literally anything. Files This turns process of configuring your editor into development task. It alread...

Three months of Rust
http://scattered-thoughts.net/blog/2015/06/04/three-months-of-rust
Three months of Rust. I work on Eve. A functional-relational programming language and environment. Since the Eve editor has to run in a browser we built the first few versions entirely in javascript. This has been pretty painful, so a little over three months ago we started looking at other options. Support manual memory layout but provides very little help in getting it right. Native objects have some necessary limitations. And asm.js is impractical to write by hand. You should look at language X! So he...

The Obsessions of an Incidental Bookseller
Thursday, August 20, 2009. Who says books don’t have an impact on your life? About thirty years ago, I read the follow up to Richard Bach’s book Jonathan Livingston Seagull called The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah. It was the first time I really heard the concept that you create your own life and that the creation of that life begins in your mind. Richard Bach visualised a blue feather just to practice and a day or so later, he bought a carton of milk and on the label was a picture of a blue feather.

Incidental Complexity
March / April / May / June. Jamie Brandon - 02 Jul 2015. Its been a while. So far, the monthly posts have included detailed technical descriptions of our work. I keep delaying posts until I can figure out how to coherently explain the ideas in them. In future, I will be posting short status updates every month and saving the gory details for unscheduled design posts, like this one. Aggregation and sorting continue to be tricky to nail down, so they are currently banished to a separate view type. To r...

Incidental Cyclist | Cycles of Life: Steve Ward
Cycles of Life: Steve Ward. November 20, 2008 by swdakota. Having to miss the Saturday group ride is always depressing to me, especially when the reason is work related. As often as this happens, which isn’t often, I try to at least get a decent ride in on Sunday. My riding club has a forum where you can post rides and look for responses from others who wouldn’t mind a little company out on the road. Taking advantage of this communication tool, I posted the following:. Silly String, drapped over and acro...
