Jac's Blog: August 2014

http://jacsblog-jac.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, 21 August 2014. We’ve just got back from a family holiday with staying with friends in France (brave and generous taking in all 9 of us at once). Big skies and beautiful views. Markets (Bricolage for books! Textures of old wood and stone. Not much drawing this year but Mary, who is a sculptor and glass artist, got me a rock and I’ve been doodling in 3D. Its mostly carved, now I need to file and refine it. Then when I got back I found this waiting for me from Alison ( My pen, brush and pencil.

Jac's Blog: More exploring

http://jacsblog-jac.blogspot.com/2015/07/more-exploring.html

Sunday, 5 July 2015. Now I think I can fairly reliably make a straightforward gum arabic print I want to push the boundaries a little. I’ve started to experiment using the technique to combine images (with a view to adding text for book projects) and. To print my own drawings. I like the torn effect and the layering but I’ll need to work out how to incorporate the coloured ‘plate tone’ in the negative space into the design if I’m going to use this technique for text. 7 July 2015 at 13:20. I really apprec...

Jac's Blog: July 2015

http://jacsblog-jac.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Monday, 27 July 2015. I’ve found several accounts on line giving information about Richard Taylor and Simon Brown. When I’ve finished both prints I’ll combine their stories in a post and credit the relevant sources. This is the print relating to Richard. He was a weaver who was sentenced to deportation for stealing. He was assigned as a cook to Sidney Hospital where he learned how to mend shoes from a fellow prisoner. He eventually set up as a cobbler. He married and had three children. I decided that I ...

Jac's Blog: April 2015

http://jacsblog-jac.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 22 April 2015. The prints are out of the pressing boards and are hanging to make sure they are completely dry. I’ve been experimenting with making book cloth to for the covers. Sunday, 12 April 2015. I’ve been working but haven’t got much in the way of pictures to share this week. The long collagraph plate worked - 6 prints and 6 ghosts. Unfortunately I forgot to photograph any before I put them under weights to dry. Sunday, 5 April 2015. It needs a couple of days to dry out thoroughly then a ...

Jac's Blog: February 2015

http://jacsblog-jac.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 February 2015. The more scanned drawings I added to the text the more it reminded me of old kitsch wallpaper (the sort with views of Tuscany interspersed with peppers and Chianti bottles). Time for Plan C. The object of the exercise was to experiment with the printer so I decided to see how I could use it to add text to pre-prepared papers. I made several different coloured surfaces using watercolour and water-soluble crayons on cartridge paper, and when dry I ironed them flat. Then using ph...

arzigogolare: May 2015

http://arzigogolare.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Once again we have reached the third Thursday of the month, AKA time for the latest edition of the ROY G BIV photo challenge. May's color is blue, so it seemed like a perfect chance to get to know my blue hydrangea better. For years I've been writing about. How I purchase one each spring, to place on the windowsill of our kitchen. But the current hydrangea in residence has also spent some time in the studio, where there's more light for photographing and space in which to explore and play a bit. On the n...

arzigogolare: Orange-inspired: ALaW "Place"

http://arzigogolare.blogspot.com/2015/02/orange-inspired-alaw-place.html

As promised, here are some m ore of the orange/paper-related. Of the letter forms shown in the image at the beginning of my previous post. I really liked how the light hit. The different surfaces,. And the shadows that were created by/in/on these little "places". Which is how I am thinking of these letters. They are my belated solution for a project I was working on last year, A Letter a Week 2014. The theme of which is "place.". You may recall that. I was studying Italo Calvino's Le Citt. A deck of cards.

arzigogolare: November 2014

http://arzigogolare.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

November's edition of the ROY G BIV* challenge fell on my daughter's birthday this year, so here are a few photos of what was happening in the kitchen yesterday. Lots of chocolate, as I went about preparing her cake, which fits perfect with this month's theme of "brown." After the success of the ice cream cake that my daughter concocted for my birthday last month (inspired by the sublime mint "After Eight" gelato. At our favorite local gelateria. A "latte" means a glass of milk, and jargon that is normale.

Jac's Blog

Thursday, 22 March 2018. I often worry that I’m a bit of a dabbler, starting something, moving on, a new technique here, a different project there, not much staying power. But after many years of trying to focus, be organised and follow one thing at a time I’ve decided that it’s time to stop trying to force it. Dabbling is the way I work best, starting several things at once and dipping in and out, exploring and playing, until at last something is finished. These are a bit grey but have real possibilities.

Sunday, February 22, 2015. Angel on the Highway. Yesterday afternoon in the midst of that treacherous snow storm and I say treacherous because it was only a few hours old and the plows hadn’t been out just yet to scrape down to the pavement and so the inch or so skating rink made drivers overly cautious or as is their wont others with 4 wheel drive brazen with insanity thinking they are invincible to the elements. Could you watch as I back down the hill? Thursday, December 25, 2014. I tell young people t...
