Jamie In Benin: Less than 15 Days

http://www.jamieinbenin.blogspot.com/2010/10/less-than-15-days.html

The contents of this website are of my own creation and do not reflect any position of the U.S government or the Peace Corps. Monday, October 4, 2010. Less than 15 Days. I wouldn’t say Benin isn’t safe, but that doesn’t mean I don’t try to consistently hide how much money I am carrying on me, or that I don’t get nervous transporting my monthly salary from the bank. I have been known to be overly cautious, or as it is nicely put; responsible. The secondary school in Mat. Ri has 22 classrooms already, whic...

The contents of this website are of my own creation and do not reflect any position of the U.S government or the Peace Corps. Monday, November 30, 2009. How Do You Solve a Problem Called Why-Why? You call Peace Corps and have the villagers threaten to throw him in jail. Sunday, I go to church, and as I walk with my sisters, I hear a voice in the distance yelling ma femme, ma femme. I ignore it, until my sisters turn and laugh. I turn and see the same man. I quicken the pace. Once at home, I go inside, cl...

One of my favorite foods and one that is native to the northern part. Of Benin is igname (yam) pilé. Imagine a potato on steroids and then. Double the size, make the skin a little tougher and thicker and you. Are close to imagining an igname. Now igname pilé takes this food that. Looks like it was produced for the Jolly Green Giant, and smashes it.

Before reading this, I warn you, if you don't want to be totally freaked out, grossed out, convinced that you never want to go to Africa, or another reason that no one should go to Africa, discontinue reading right now. A few weeks ago, upon returning home from watching Harry Potter the Prisoner of Azkaban. The next day I head dow...

dpcTHEpcv: Postpone for Democracy

http://dpcthepcv.blogspot.com/2011/03/postpone-for-democracy.html

Tuesday, March 8, 2011. While there are plenty of little pieces of paper being tossed around by little kids supporting this candidate, ABT, some people still choose to campaign the old-fashioned way: by painting blandly on as-yet-unfinished buildings. And then some people are so devoted to their local candidates that they can't bare to physically separate themselves from him (or her). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Friday, December 17, 2010. On the Road Again. And our room for the first night. Apparently there's a fete every year at the start of the dry season where people take to the streets to swing burning tires around, effectively lighting all of the dry brush on fire. A very eerie experience and quite a surprise given that it was going on outside of our window. Links to this post. Friday, December 3, 2010. The the tune of "Oh where oh where has my little dog gone? Thursday, June 23, 2011. Hey all. Here is a video depicting our experience on the bike tour. Enjoy! Links to this post. Wednesday, June 1, 2011. This year I was able to organize the ONLY bike tour taking place in Benin. We biked hundreds of kms to spread knowledge (and tee. Shirts) to ten rural villages in the Borgou/Atakora. Overall, over 2,000 individuals were taught about the benefits of family planning. What's family planning, you ask? It's as easy as it sounds. How many kids would you like to have?

Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Photos of Recent Happenings: Camp Succes de Tre! The girls of Camp Succes de Tre engage in a competition to set up mosquito nets. Mosquito nets are the most cost-effective way of preventing malaria, the number one cause of death in Benin. Girls learn about a balanced diet. Brigitte donated brand new jerseys to the school, and gave the girls the opportunity to be the first to sport them. Of course, no camp is complete without a victory parade at the end. Sunday, January 9, 2011. So it's been quite the busy month since Mark and I got back from the mock bike tour. I, along with a few of my friends, was able to get up to Niamey, the lazy capital of Niger, whence we partook of the excursion to see the last herd of wild giraffes in West Africa, an ENORMOUS crocodile skeleton (see Supercroc wiki entry. Here we are again with the giraffes. That's a Tuareg wrap, in case you were wondering. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Corps de la Paix.

Jamie in Armenia

Monday, August 23, 2010. The world's oldest shoe and a snake pit: Weeks 8 and 9. My time in Armenia is coming close to an end now, and I think though it will be nice to get back to normal life I'll be very sad to leave. In terms of AIESEC work things are quite relaxed now, as I hand over to my replacement and get together the EB* for the next year. Over the last couple of weeks I've been up to a fair amount, so I'll try hard not to make this blog post too epic. Trip to the museum. Another one of the main...

Jamie in Asia 2008 2009. After ten years of dreaming about cycling in a foreign country and well over 10 years of dreaming of visiting Asia, I'm going to be doing both in one trip. For four months, my bike and I will be in South East Asia with the intention to see Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. And here, my travels will unfold when I have time to sit and type. Enjoy. Sunday, June 28, 2009. To SE Asia and all the lovely, kind, generous people I met, adeiu for now. Thursday, April 30, 2009. What can I say?

Jamie in China | my adventures as they happen

August 11, 2007. Filed under: Changjiang River. 8212; Jamie @ 8:55 pm. Anyway, the next day I opted for an optional tour, which was a mistake. I was too tired at my 6:20 wake up call and sort of zombied through the tour, sitting and nodding off at every opportunity. Not money well spent. When we arrived back on the boat, we went through the first gorge. It was really magnificent, though the fog sometimes obscures my photography:.
