Cafe News, Volume 11. December 7, 2010. Today, I don’t have anything to say. I’m too tired. Everything is fine. There is nothing wrong with the world. Just let me sleep. Aren’t we supposed to leave this world a better place than we found it? Aren’t we supposed to sacrifice our present for their future, to vouchsafe our fortune with the coming generation? Where is the council of our elders, perpetuating the visions of the past? Where is the thread that holds this all together? Posted in nouvelles de cafe.

Cafe News, Volume 8. April 2, 2010. For the most part, a name is a good thing. It gives you someplace to start, and it helps with communication. But it comes at a cost. The name John recalls the ghost of every John who has ever been, is, or shall ever be. So you can see why it might be hard to keep myself from conjuring up her image at the mention of her name. Maybe if you’re lucky, they will name you Steve. Posted in nouvelles de cafe. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

Cafe News, Volume 10. November 9, 2010. Clink of glasses. Scent of seared lamb. In the perfectly lit corner of a small café, the world is being dismantled in tiny little parcels. The pieces are so insignificant their loss goes completely unnoticed, yet the limit as their number approaches infinity equals the whole. The food in the café is superb, the drink strong, and the company sublime. It helps with the process. One thing I’ve found about wine is that if you’re not going to spend a lot of money on a b...

When we found the car it was parked against a tree, a horse chestnut. I let go of my girlfriend’s hand and walked around it. Amazingly there was not a scratch anywhere. 8220;It looks different,” she said. It did, she was right, but I didn’t think it was helpful of her to point it out at just that moment. 8220;Did you…” she trailed off as I raised an eyebrow. “Then how? 8220;Morning dears,” she said as she passed. 8220;She didn’t even notice,” I said. Back then, wars were far away. It’s a strawberry, I whispered to my brother. PYOing, whatever that might be, was connected with strawberries. Clearly this was what my parents called a treat. It was now or never. He leaned in. Could we PYO one day? No, he said. Father’s voice was gruff. Said my brother. Yes! What’s going on? I said to my brother. Why are we going this way? He said imperiously, though I’m sure he didn’t really know himself. I nodded, complicit. Whatever you pick goes in here, understand?

Cafe News, Volume 12. January 27, 2011. The funny thing, as I sit here observing myself over a pint of the local brew, is that I don’t think I look foolish and I don’t feel the slightest bit jealous. I see myself and I’m amazed. There is so much space between here and there, so much space contained in such a minute distance. Hell, I’m only fourteen feet from myself and still a universe away from perfection. Except in a moment. Only moments are unique. Each one a being unto itself, seamlessly sepa...I’ve ...

Cafe News, Volume 9. May 2, 2010. When she asked me to leave, I wasn’t surprised. I wasn’t happy, but I wasn’t sad either. It was the strangest thing. She knew it was coming, I knew it was coming, but somehow we still weren’t prepared for it. So we had to have a fight. And I always regret that. The first thing I remember was the last thing I forgot. It’s better that way. Otherwise you might ask me about details. I don’t want to remember the details. The details make me lonely. There’s a lot to be discove...
