RunEven: October 2011

Saturday, October 22, 2011. Tomorrow, I race. Today, though, I'm going to run four miles or so, and I'm going to do everything in my power to really enjoy it. Back in high school, on the cross country team, race-day eve was always spent with a quick, easy three miles. There was no need to push it. Then we'd go home. Practice lasted little more than a half hour. So I'm going to do four miles. And I'm going to do it with a smile on my face. Posted by Jared Kaltwasser. Saturday, October 15, 2011. Everything...

RunEven: Sidelined

Thursday, January 29, 2015. So, um. You may have noticed I haven't blogged here in a while. There's a good reason for that. A good reason, and some bad ones. I guess I'll have to start with the elephant in the room: Yes, I ran (and finished! So I've got mixed feelings about the race. There's definitely a part of me that's disappointed. I'm not sure if I'll ever run another full marathon, and if I only run one marathon in my life, I would have preferred it was at a faster time. I also got a hip injury.

RunEven: May 2012

Monday, May 21, 2012. The heat is on. It’s getting to be that time of year when heat becomes a major threat to my running schedule. But with a marathon just five months away, I can’t afford to take the summer off. Summer heat means I need to be extra-vigilant in scheduling my runs and preparing for my runs. I feel like my running performance starts to sag any time the temperature gets much over 70 degrees, though I'm sure that threshold varies from person to person. Run in the morning. Monday, May 7, 2012.

RunEven: Home stretch!
http://www.runeven.com/2012/10/home-stretch.html
Sunday, October 7, 2012. Two weeks away. Three and a half months of training down. Just two weeks to go. That fact doesn't faze me too much. While I’m confident I’m physically prepared for the race, mentally it still seems a bit distant to me. So, partially to help re-engage, partially to self-assess, let’s take stock of where I’m at today, Oct. 7:. But I’m not injured. So I’m lucky not to have injured myself (thus far). I feel good about that. Mentally, I’m not so sure. I never read that book ...That...

RunEven: Getting real...
http://www.runeven.com/2012/09/getting-real.html
Thursday, September 6, 2012. This weekend I hit the big-time. Saturday’s long run is 20 miles. It will be a new personal distance record. My current record is 17 miles. By necessity, I’m treating this long run sort of like a race. I’m going to get plenty of rest the next two nights, and make sure I eat plenty of carbohydrates on Friday evening. My plan is to get up at 5 am and get out the door as soon as possible. If I can keep to about 11:00 per mile, I should be gone until about 9 am. The truth is, one...

Monday, September 10, 2012. Four takeaways from 20 miles. I did it. I ran 20 miles Saturday. I’ll add the caveat that I did stop a few times for a couple of minutes, generally to drink water or eat Gatorade chews. I finished in 4 hours 4 minutes. That’s slower than I wanted, but I really don’t care so much about time. I’m focused on finishing. With the run behind me, here are a few takeaways:. Four hours is a long time. You know that Ryan Hall commercial that aired during the Olympics? By Roger Lowenstei...

RunEven: My (Grandparents') Diet Philosophy
http://www.runeven.com/2015/02/my-grandparents-diet-philosophy.html
Thursday, February 5, 2015. My (Grandparents') Diet Philosophy. This post is about my "diet" philosophy. I'm not saying it works. Only that it's my philosophy. Think of it as a diet philosophy that's a philosophy first, a diet second. Here it is: Real food is good enough. I can summarize it in three points. 1 I don't do "miracle" foods. I'm sure there are tropical berries that are super healthy and herbal teas the Mayans drank that are much better for you than a cup of hot chocolate. However, I don't.

Saturday, January 31, 2015. FitBit Flex Review: 9 Questions. One of the hottest items of this past Christmas season was the FitBit, a pedometer on steroids that tracks steps and sleep patterns.
