Jen and Alan in Namibia

Jen and Alan in Namibia. Monday, December 29, 2008. 1 year in Africa. 2 lines from squinting my eyes. 3 year birthday for Katie. 4 seasons of heat red, rain, green, dry yellow. 5 months living in the back of the Kombi. Uncountable needs in this country, and still so much uncertainty about how to be constructively involved. A biologist’s paradise – this year we will remember because, wherever one stops and looks carefully, something wonderful in nature reveals itself. Labels: whats a label? More than half...

Jen and Alan in Namibia: Chicken Run!

http://jenandalan.blogspot.com/2008/10/chicken-run.html

Jen and Alan in Namibia. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. There have been a few hurdles to overcome. First, chickens are illegal in Windhoek. Well, we’re only raising chicks, and they’ll be moved elsewhere when the experiment finishes at about 6 weeks. We didn’t even ask about whether it was okay to keep them for the first week in our apartment (we finally found a good use for our space heater! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Jen and Alan in Namibia: January 2008

http://jenandalan.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Jen and Alan in Namibia. Monday, January 28, 2008. On the coast of Washington, a popular topic of conversation is the weather – when will the rain stop? Here in Namibia, the question is when will they start? The coast typically gets 2 mm of rain annually, and this one rain shower must have exceeded the average – not to mention the capacity of the roof. (We were at a B&B, just waking up to go explore some rocky intertidal sites.). Daan Viljoen nature reserve. And several birds. Alan said: “Pinch...We trav...

Jen and Alan in Namibia: Himba village

http://jenandalan.blogspot.com/2008/12/himba-village.html

Jen and Alan in Namibia. Monday, December 29, 2008. The 3 small donkeys suffered from this rig, plus carrying 6 people in an unbalanced cart through gullies and over rocky ground. They were fast on the downhill, but I preferred to walk the last stretch. We observed but didn’t understand the cultural quilt in this area: it’s Damaraland, so many Damara people, but some Himbas interspersed with more cattle than goats, and San people doing most of the work. Jen and Alan in Namibia: February 2008

http://jenandalan.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Jen and Alan in Namibia. Saturday, February 16, 2008. Week 5 trip to coast. Mr Klein described the following food web in the salt pond “chemostat” where he grows oysters: Flamingos remove most of the organisms in the sediment. Fishing birds such as terns and cormorants feed on the fish (which include “freshwater” tilapia at 40 ppm! So the isopods might not be responsible for a rapid decline in worms. Monday, February 4, 2008. Verbal changes: asks a lot of questions – Did you have fun on the boat? Can rec...

http://jenandalan.blogspot.com/2008/10/change-in-weather-and-some-more-food.html

Jen and Alan in Namibia. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. A change in the weather (and some more food comments). In Namibia, spring arrives in September. Despite the ongoing dry weather, some of the Acacia trees flower, and there’s a heady sweetness in the air. From our 7th floor apartment, Windhoek looks like a patchwork of purple, because all the introduced (from Australia/NZ? Mostly about the natural landscape. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes: A little time to think, please

http://namibiafulbright.blogspot.com/2009/04/little-time-to-think-please.html

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. A little time to think, please. Over the Easter holiday break, our family had the good fortune to travel to northwest Namibia with a student from Polytechnic. His name is Uapii (pronounced, "Wahpee"), and he's a third-year student in agriculture. He invited us to get to know his homeland a bit better. For the time being, we will let our photos and captions (archived here). Just give us a little time to think. Thank you so much for allowing us to live vic...

http://namibiafulbright.blogspot.com/2009/12/and-back-to-nebraska.html

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. And back to Nebraska. Home again. A blizzard closing in from Kansas and Colorado. Friends and family. Too much to do before Christmas. Realizing how far it really is between Namibia and Nebraska. No really good way to close out this blog. Maybe a toss backward to some favorite blogs of the year. A year in review:. January: Kelly's report on shopping. February: Larkin locked in the men's room. March: We tackle our first camping trip with the Bates family.

http://namibiafulbright.blogspot.com/2009/09/dont-you-wish-you-had-one-of-these.html

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. Don’t you wish you had one of these? For the past 3-4 weeks, a little bird has been making the rounds of our kitchen floor every morning. We keep the door open almost constantly, and it seems that our buddy likes combing the floor for crumbs and such. We've named him Freddy Freeloader. Today, we nabbed him on tape. With apologies to Dr. Seuss, we offer the following. Don't you wish you had one of these? From the far reaches of Windhoek. It nests in a hole.

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. Held hostage by my own stupidity. Today's blog is a short story, with a happy ending. Keep asking for the nitty. What about the students that have class in our building? We have to give them a key, if we want to let them use the facilities. Our choice. Otherwise, they have to go to a different building. So, to set the stage for one of my most embarrassing moments, I had attended several pre. During the first week of classes, I was covering Plant Studies ...

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. A Namibian Preschool Experience. Future Professor School Song. Just this week there were three new students in this class - triplets! The next few weeks will be great fun for me as we have moved into animal themes. This week was reptiles and amphibians. I read a book about snakes and all the students talked about how dangerous snakes are - here in Namibia most snakes can kill you in less than 3 minutes! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. The lunch lady and the Sewage Board. Several people, especially folks writing 'newsy' stories about our year here, have asked me what my daily routine is like. Perhaps they wonder if we start the day by walking a mile to get our water. Or, maybe they wonder if we have to collect firewood to cook our meal. Unfortunately, neither of these are correct. Our life in Namibia is very similar to our lives in Nebraska. 1 The lunch lady. In addition, Polytechnic h...

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. Namibia: come apart at the seams. Newspaper, the Namibian Tourism Board placed a large advertisement to congratulate the Right Honourable Prime Minister Nahas. On his 66 th. Birthday. It is very common for companies to place ads in the paper wishing "Happy Birthday" to politicians. I guess if you want to receive tenders (contracts) in the coming year from the government, it pays to grease their palms. When President Pohamba. 1 Namibia: for those who.

http://namibiafulbright.blogspot.com/2009/06/birds-and-houseguests.html

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. I just returned from 4 days in northern Namibia (just west of Etosha NP) at the Ehirovipuka (pronounced Eee-hero-vee'-puka) communal conservancy. I traveled with Uapii, our friend and Polytechnic student, who translated my survey on ecotourism to the OshiHerrero-speaking farmers. We were also joined by Aaron Price, a recent graduate of U. Nebraska, who has just arrived in Namibia for a 6-month stint with World Wildlife Fund. On our Picasa photo site.

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes: Thanksgiving in Namibia

http://namibiafulbright.blogspot.com/2009/11/thanksgiving-in-namibia.html

Nebraska to Namibia: from Sandhills to sand dunes. For those wondering how the holidays are celebrated in Namibia, here's a list of what is happening at Thanksgiving time:. We celebrated on Thanksgiving Day by going out to eat with our Fulbright friends, the Bates family. No turkey on the menu, and we realized it might be our last time at the Portuguese. Place that we've frequented in the past. So, we all ordered things we'd been looking at but hadn't ordered before. Larkin's. Turkey is not a typical thi...

Project 365: Alex and Jen in 2009

Tuesday, March 17, 2009. Today is St. Patrick's Day.  Leprechauns came to my house and messed up my room, left chocolate coins, took cushions off the couch, made my milk green, peed green in the toilets, made our puppy's water green and were naughty. Tuesday, March 3, 2009. March 3, #62. We had bread for dinner last night.  I took a picture of the foil.  It is pretty. March 2, #61. Sunday, March 1, 2009. Week 9 (#'s 54-60; Feb 23-Mar 1). Today we're learning about Jackie robinson in school.  We ...We are...
