A couple Sundays ago, I took a two hour boat ride from Petrolina upstream to the Ilha do Massangano, a river island with a very unique kind of samba. Bees lived in the cracks of the very smooth and flat walls. There were pinturas rupestres/ancient paintings too! According to the guide they are 9 to 10 thousand years old. It was a busy week of showing Bill around Petrolina and Juazeiro, introducing him to friends, co-workers, students, and professors, and eating typical Brazilian foods. At the beginning of April, I went on another excursion with the local photography group to Boipeba, a small island off the coast of Bahia. The island was relaxed and not too touristy, with long mostly empty beaches and warm water. As it was a photography outing, I took more pictures than usual. Here they are! Luan on a swing. Jenny's ramblings from Brazil. October 12, 2015. Climbing in the sertão. Charley found climbing in the sert ão! There are definitely no climbing gyms in Petrolina, and I would be surprised if there is one in the entire Northeast. Connected through friends of friends, a climber who. There are just two routes and I was able to get up the easier one, with some help. It was refreshing to be outside all day, watch the afternoon wane away, and challenge myself climbing.
