Concrete barriers, checkpoints and a surly teenage soldier shifting his machine gun across his chest as he approaches. He inspects my passport with suspicion. We drive slowly through the checkpoint. And there it is. Nine metres high, stark concrete, mind-numbingly incongruous. The 9 metre high separation wall almost completely surrounds Bethlehem.

The only sound is the hush of the sled’s skis and the patter of the dogs’ feet. I reckon huskies do. The silence is splendid. Over to the west the sun was peaking above the tops of the firs.
