The Zambia Diaries: September 2012
http://zambiadiaries.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Saturday, 29 September 2012. 4 There's a lion outside. This post is going to be intentionally reflective. Over the next three months I'll be talking much more about the practical stuff and how we're getting ready to go, but I hope you'll forgive me a bit of a philosophical muse on where we are right now. Anyway, that is not the point of the story. The point of that story is to give me a neat lead into my current thesis. I want to talk about all the things that threaten to hold us back. I'm happy to admit...

The Zambia Diaries: 22. Mr. Stonier is my father.
http://zambiadiaries.blogspot.com/2014/12/22-mr-stonier-is-my-father.html
Thursday, 4 December 2014. 22 Mr Stonier is my father. People have started calling me Mr. Stonier. I don’t like it. Mr Stonier is my dad. “Mr. Stonier” is a hereditary title that can only be passed on after the current holder has passed on. Which is some time in the distant future, all things being well. Plus it sounds old. I’m too young to be Mister anything: I’m only, what, thirty…umm…seven? You see: completely different. The hat is part of the package. Round about August a couple we know announced tha...

The Zambia Diaries: 23. Full Stop.
http://zambiadiaries.blogspot.com/2015/06/23-full-stop.html
Wednesday, 24 June 2015. Back in 2012 when our adventure began the plan was to spend 2.5 years in Africa – six months in South Africa and then two years in Zambia. That 2.5 years started January 2013. The astute among you will notice that 2.5 years ends in June 2015…. Needed creating, and the whole place needed decorating. We had a mammoth task and with no finances to sort it, other than what we could raise, it felt like. A mountain to climb. I confess that for the first 6 months I (Claire) broke dow...

Saturday, 29 December 2012. 7 An Exercise in Trust. If you ever want to know real trust, ship a car. First you do a google search for shipping companies, phone a few at random, then contract the one with the nicest-sounding receptionist and/or the best price. Because they don't take credit cards, you transfer £900 quid from your bank account into theirs. In return for this you get an email of a scan of a photocopy of a shipping note, of which you must download and print out two copies. There are generall...

The Zambia Diaries: 21. How can I bless you today brother?
http://zambiadiaries.blogspot.com/2014/08/21-how-can-i-bless-you-today-brother.html
Thursday, 28 August 2014. 21 How can I bless you today brother? I have a friend here in Zambia who always answers the phone by saying "How can I bless you today, brother? It's brilliant, so I've started doing it myself. The reaction is great: invariably there's a few seconds of silence followed by a tentative "hello? To which I reply "Yes, how can I bless you today, brother? There is then another few seconds of silence and a "Jason? Is actually a really awesome way to start a conversation. Simply, it is ...

The Zambia Diaries: January 2014
http://zambiadiaries.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, 2 January 2014. 18 Have you been away? So we have just had the privilege of spending a few weeks in England with family and friends where we have laughed and cried and been extremely well fed in what seems like most regions of this fair land. I think Jason wants to write a little more about this in a longer blog for the future, so I'll hold off the suspense for you until then. We are helping to plan the J-Life training for the next group starting in February and have a number of embryonic ideas...

The Zambia Diaries: June 2013

Sunday, 9 June 2013. 14 Earning Our Keep. April and May have been our busiest months yet. It’s great to be really earning our keep and we love being busy, it seems to have flown by in a blur. So what have we been up to? The boys are doing well – Reuben continues to be the outgoing, outspoken one, shouting ‘Good Morning’ as he enters his class each day and his latest phrase is ‘daddy, what ARE you doing? Today Daniel and Reuben were singing the SA national anthem which is in lots of different. We’ve...

Friday, 20 September 2013. 16 Elephants On The Road. You’ll recall from the last blog that we had said our goodbyes in South Africa and were about to embark on the journey north to Zambia. For those of a nervous disposition, or those pressed for time and wishing to jump to the conclusion, let me tell you right now that we arrived safely, and in good spirits. Our days were planned to go like this:. Day 3, 477km: get up early and see the falls, leave around 11am to arrive at a guest house in Lusaka by 17:00.
