Open Source Exile: Is there a place for readers' collectives in the bright new world of eBooks?
http://opensourceexile.blogspot.com/2011/03/is-there-place-for-readers-collectives.html
An open sourcer in exile. Wednesday, 23 March 2011. Is there a place for readers' collectives in the bright new world of eBooks? The transition costs of migrating from the world of books-as-physical-artefacts-of-pulped-tree to the world of books-as-bitstreams are going to be non-trivial. There's a whole range of books that I'm interested in that don't appear to be on the business plan of any of the current eBook publishers, and I'll miss them if they're not converted:. Local writing by local authors.

Christina's LIS Rant: The meaning of citations
http://christinaslibraryrant.blogspot.com/2008/08/meaning-of-citations.html
Friday, August 29, 2008. The meaning of citations. What a grand post title, but actually, what I mean is slightly more like: the meaning of citations: what Garfield said he means in a bunch of articles vs. what people say he means and even worse what people do with his work, plus some commentary on a review chapter. Today I read the whole Nicolaisen[*] article which I just browsed earlier. LC Smith (1981, cited in *) provides these assumptions that underlie citation analysis:. 5 All citations are equal.

Open Source Exile: What LibraryThing metadata can the NZETC reasonable stuff inside it's CC'd epubs?
http://opensourceexile.blogspot.com/2009/11/what-librarything-metadata-can-nzetc.html
An open sourcer in exile. Sunday, 8 November 2009. What LibraryThing metadata can the NZETC reasonable stuff inside it's CC'd epubs? This is the second blog following on from an excellent talk about librarything. Given the VUW in Wellington after his trip to LIANZA. So what kinds of data am I interested in? 1) Traditional bibliographic metadata. Both LT and NZETC have this down really well. 2) Images. LT has many many cover images, NZETC has images of plates from inside many works too. While most current...

Wednesday, December 14, 2011. Seeking open review of provocative data publication essay. Peter Fox and I have submitted an essay to the Data Science Journal entitled "Is data publication the right metaphor? If accepted, the essay would be part of a special issue resulting from the inaugural conference of the new ICSU World Data System. We encourage everyone to read it and to provide constructive critique in the comments of this blog. Apologies for cross posting, but we really want to get the word out.

Paul Courant’s blog about libraries, economics, public policy, and other stuff. When I’m Sixty-four. When I get older, losing my hair,. Many years from now. Well, older for sure, and many years from then. I have the good fortune to have what is still a pretty full head of hair. It’s gray, and it’s thinner and less curly than the Isro that I sported back in the day. But the point of the line is that at 64 I Iook my age and feel the decades between then and now. Will you still be sending me a valentine,.
