Click the maps to see more reports in the areas! Latest uploaded reports or photo albums. Welcome to our website. We live in Hong Kong, and much of China is readily accessible from Shenzhen's Airport, only a couple of hours away. Over the past few years we've put quite a lot of time and effort to explore some of the highways and byways of asia, especially in China. We've written up a smaller proportion of our non-China trips over the past few years. Why? These places are easier to find your way around in.

John's Hong Kong Birding: Red-necked Stints
http://johnjemi.blogspot.com/2015/04/red-necked-stints.html
Mainly birding in Hong Kong with a few pictures thrown in. A bright sunny day in mid-April. The tide is a lot lower than predicted, but the sun is shining and some of the the waders are close to the boardwalk hides at Mai Po Nature Reserve. Terek Sandpiper - Xenus cinereus. Shows what "air supremacy" means. A group of umpteen Red-necked Stints have decided that the spot right in front of the hide is exactly where they want to be. Red-necked Stint - Calidris ruficollis. Friday, April 24, 2015. Solo Walk f...

John's Hong Kong Birding: 2014.06

Mainly birding in Hong Kong with a few pictures thrown in. A trip to see Palawan Peacock Pheasant - 13th to 21st June 2014. When I was young I used to hide from tense TV dramas by skulking behind the sofa or going to see what Mum was doing in the kitchen. The prospect of the England football team's first two World Cup games in the Brazil World Cup finals induced a similar kind of unease, so it seemed a good time to take a short birding break in the Philippines. Mainly birding in Hong Kong with a few pictures thrown in. Birds - many with wet feet. Yes, I know I'll have to be more imaginative in my choice of attention-grabbing blog post titles. Anyway, a "mixed bag" from the past couple of weeks. Here's one from Shek Kong Water Catchment. Dark-sided Flycatcher - Muscicapa sibirica. At the "scrape" at Mai Po, exotic Harriers proved elusive for me, but this male and juvenile Painted Snipe provided something to look at. Greater Painted-Snipe - Rostratula benghalensis.

Mainly birding in Hong Kong with a few pictures thrown in. Mai Po : Black-headed Gull in July. Despite temperatures at 30 degrees and above, yesterday I decided that a manly stroll to Mai Po's boardwalk hides would be a good way to spend two to three hours. Sunhat, sunblock, and the 500mm lens seemed like an appropriate combination. Along the path, beneath the casuarinas, the first of many White-breasted Waterhens. From the newest boardwalk hide, a surprise. Black-headed Gulls. Thursday, July 31, 2014.

Mainly birding in Hong Kong with a few pictures thrown in. Two half-days at Luokeng Nature Reserve, north Guangdong. The road to Luokeng. In September 2002 a team from Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (HK), together with mainland Chinese researchers did a "Rapid Biodiversity Assessment" of Luofeng NR in north Guangdong. The area has a population of the rare Crocodile Lizard (Shinisaurus crocodilurus). Among the KFBG report findings was that Himalayan Swiftlets (Collocallia brevirostris). After a dawn ren...

Mainly birding in Hong Kong with a few pictures thrown in. In spring 2013 we sailed between New Zealand and Papua New Guinea on the “Western Pacific Odyssey” (Heritage Expeditions). I blogged about that trip here:. Http:/ johnjemi.blogspot.hk/2013/05/western-pacific-odyssey-2013-part-1-all 20.html. There were a wide variety of seabird enthusiasts on the trip including Canadian Dr. Kirk Zufelt, whose website “Pelagic Odyssey” makes his interests plain. Http:/ www.pelagicodyssey.ca. Mainly birding in Hong Kong with a few pictures thrown in. I recall seeing Purple Swamphen. About twenty years ago at Mai Po, but the possibility of escapes in HK long clouded their status. Up to the beginning of 2015 it was determined that there were only three acceptable records of truly wild birds in Hong Kong. Purple Swamphen is distributed from Africa across much of tropical Asia, with about a dozen recognised races. The Yunnan province race is poliocephalus. After an hour or so, the "star" bird mad...

Mainly birding in Hong Kong with a few pictures thrown in. In praise of - Oriental Pratincole (Glareola maldivarum). In spring, Oriental Pratincoles. Pass through Hong Kong between the end of February and mid-May. A couple of days ago, I had the luck to come across a pond with twenty or more of these birds wheeling around taking insects in the late afternoon sunshine. In flight they are surprisingly erratic - at least that's my excuse for not getting more shots in focus. Monday, March 12, 2018. And the t...
