Is Powerwall good for coal and nuclear? May 5th, 2015. Because they are costly to turn on and off (or even up and down), these technologies produce too much power at times of little demand (late night and early morning). More on this soon, I hope. May 5th, 2015 at 12:24 #1. For many years I’d tried to argue that nuclear needs stor...

Modelling lame duck prime ministers — Crooked Timber
http://crookedtimber.org/2006/04/07/modelling-lame-duck-prime-ministers
Modelling lame duck prime ministers. April 7, 2006. David Clark in the Guardian. We start by assuming that there is a single “representative” MP, that all he wants is a “prize” (say a ministerial job or some other sort of preferment) and the only way he can get a prize is by grovelling. He has to decide whether to grovel to Tony or to Gordon. We model this thing starting from day 1 of the current Parliament. 6When Gordon gets in, the shit-list is only relevant to people who got prizes under Tony. Peo...

Bowling for Illidan: Cairns and the Daintree (August 07)
http://bowlingforillidan.blogspot.com/2007/08/cairns-and-daintree-august-07.html
Wednesday, November 28, 2007. Cairns and the Daintree (August 07). Far North Queensland is the closest you'll get to another country without leaving Australia. The first thing you notice are the local endangered species. Aspires to the full range of urban pretensions, like this art gallery behind the beachfront string of backpacker dens. No original Picasso here, though there's one on Magnetic Island down south. Once you've sampled the culture, you can get on to the town's strengths. Most return to Cairn...

I like to plot! Saturday, February 21. Load ABS files to MySQL. When I am working in R, I tend to have my working data in a MySQL database. I found that R did not always play nicely (and quickly) with complex Microsoft Excel files. Previously, I had quite a complex bit of python code to read Excel files and upload them to MySQL. I have now retooled the way in which I load files from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to MySQL using Python pandas. The code is much simpler. Import sys sys.path&#...

Thoughts on theology, science, and culture. Saturday, February 28, 2015. The end does not justify the means. My family is watching the final season. Of Foyle's War as it is currently available on ABC iview. Foyle was a police detective in WWII, but after the war he works for the security agency, MI5. The cold war has begun and the UK government is trying to position itself in the Middle East. Besides the entertainment I like the show for several reasons. Ross H. McKenzie. It’s all been done. December 2, 2010 at 8:45 pm Posted in Fiction. Jonathan Franzen: photographed at the Brooklyn Book Festival by David Shankbone (Wikimedia Commons). I keep thinking about this really interesting interview on Lateline. On 30 November 2010 with the author Jonathan Franzen. And in particular, what he was saying about getting the sense more and more that the language you speak is going dead on you and that it’s oppressive. I suspect not. Anyone else sometimes feel this way? Because he was ...

Left Wing Politics
A biased look at current political events as they happen (almost). Wednesday, July 29, 2009. My aunt and I got into a discussion about economics and poverty. I was essentially coming from the right and she was essentially coming from the left. I just sent her an email on the topic and took the relevant excerpts for this page. Maybe this will be some debate fodder for us on this page. Also, I was thinking about our discussion of poverty. So I thought I'd do a little looking around. Poverty of the 1950's.
