Birding in Oregon and beyond. Checklist of Oregon Birds. July 17, 2016. I hiked from Timberline Lodge to the snow fields above Silcox Hut. My main target was Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch. I missed the finches, but there is always something fun to see on the mountain. There were a lot of skiers and snowboarders on the remaining snow fields. I don’t know how you expect to find Rosy-Finches while going that fast, but to each their own. Lupines were one of several wildflowers that are currently in bloom. A distan...

Birding in Oregon and beyond. Checklist of Oregon Birds. Tag Archives: Spotted Sandpiper. Fernhill Wetlands and Jackson Bottom. July 28, 2016. I made a quick trek around Washington County’s two prominent wetlands. There was nothing unusual to report, but there is plenty of bird activity at these sites this time of year. Green Heron, lurking. Great Blue Heron, not lurking. Juvenile California Gulls are very common lately. Belted Kingfishers like the perches that have been installed at Fernhill. This park ...

Birding in Oregon and beyond. Checklist of Oregon Birds. Tag Archives: Black Turnstone. July 25, 2015. Whimbrel, Necanicum Estuary. Caspian Terns are common and very vocal all along the coast. Elk, Necanicum Estuary. This Semipalmated Plover was the only shorebird at the tidal ponds at Fort Stevens. Raccoon, on the mudflats near Parking Lot D, Fort Stevens (with a Caspian Tern and a California Gull). This is one of two Ruddy Turnstones we found with a flock of Black Turnstones at the Seaside Cove. The Se...

All of Oregon birding’s “greatest hits” are here, along with a few gems you won’t read about anywhere else. In addition to the site guides, Birding Oregon includes:.

Laura Goes Birding: Flashback Friday
http://laurawhittemore.blogspot.com/2014/03/flashback-friday.html
Friday, March 7, 2014. I grew up in Berkeley, about an hour south, and had spent lots of time at Point Reyes as a child. I applied, and for some reason they accepted me, even though I could barely tell a sparrow from an eagle. I had two jobs during my stay at the Palomarin Field Station. In Maryland. If you find a band, you can report it online and find out the bird's history. Why is this important information? Was banded as an adult 63 years ago! There is no place like Palomarin in Oregon, but Californi...

A Beginner's Birding Blog. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Tag Archives: Slate-colored Fox Sparrow. July 26, 2015. In an attempt to escape the city for a weekend, my boyfriend and I headed to Mount Margaret Backcountry. A rugged and gorgeous setting north of Mt St Helens in the Blast Zone. Of the 1980 eruption. We hiked 6 miles in to Panhandle Lake. I was thrilled to spend more quality time with this one. Helped me distinguish it from the four subspecies of Fox Sparrows. Enter your em...

Thursday, September 25, 2014. Birds and things closer to home. I haven't bored you all with my yard birds in awhile, so I'll start with those. Fall is here. My FOS Golden-crowned Sparrow showed up on the exact same date as one showed up last year. The next day the White-crowneds arrived. American Goldfinches have been accumulating, now outnumbering the Lesser Goldfinches who must have nested nearby. There has been one super annoying young LEGO lately whose screeches drive me nuts. I don't think I shared ...

Saturday, May 23, 2015. As the appropriately lone member of the Lone Birders team for this year's Birdathon. I decided to hit up Ridgefield NWR to see how many species I could find. The first thing I found were Barn Swallows doing the deed in the middle of the road. Photos are terrible but I know you want to see anyway. I walked the Kiwa Trail for the first time this year which helped the morning's list quite a bit. And back on the auto tour. Trying to woo a sleeping teal. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Window s...

Sunday, November 30, 2014. On Thanksgiving morning my friend and I headed down to Coos Bay for a few days of exploring and getting completely soaking wet. Since the Lesser Black-backed Gulls seen recently near Creswell were directly on the way I decided to stop and check them out. You like bad photos right? View of Elk Creek from bridge near Elkton. With veggies and no utensils. Because we forgot utensils. It all washed down well with some Alaskan Winter Ale. Friday morning we got up and headed out to ex...

Saturday, August 29, 2015. The coast and stuff. Yesterday I took a drive out to the north coast with Christian. To check out a few spots for terns and shorebirds, stopping at the Hammond Boat Basin first. The Elegant Terns have re-terned (shoot me now) and put on a decent show. Sometimes I think terns are my favorite birds. On the walk back to the car I noticed a fuzzy caterpillar on the grass, perhaps a Yellow Woolly Bear? If so, it's a Virginia Tiger Moth in the making. Broughton Beach has continued to...
Some weeks... - Tara Choate
http://tarachoate.com/some-weeks
Laquo; Someone Else’s Palette. The book didn’t cover hyperventilation. Some weeks seem longer than others, and this one seemed exceptionally long. So to celebrate the end, we went for a short hike around a (very dry) Canemah this evening. I saw this unusual fledgling sparrow. I spied a kestrel sitting in a tree next to a goldfinch. The madronas have had their bark sunburned off and are now nearly white. Canemah’s in bloom. I’m not weighing my soul. Wildlife, and I’m not even out of my driveway. Complete ...
